Newbie Needs Google Places Help

I'm trying to help my friend with his Google Places listing. He already claimed it about a month ago before I knew about SEO and Google Places. Here's the dilemma. His family is the original owner but sold the main store a couple of years ago to someone outside of the family but my friend still owns the name. My friend just opened a new location in the suburbs. Only 2 stores exist at this time. The original restaurant is named Riley's Burgers(not the real name) and my friend's store is named just Riley's since he still owns the name. The Google Places listing for the original store is Riley's Burgers but my friend claimed his as Riley's Cafe. The original store has a lot of citations and reviews under Riley's Burgers and my friend only has 2. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to change my friend's Google Places name to Riley's Burgers with the different address and website and grab the juice off of the original store. Is this a good idea?

You should find the most relevant and highest searched keyword using adwords.google.com with the least competition. If "BURGER JOINT BOSTON" is stronger than "Joe's burger" Then use that..

    Hi TigerEye,

    Good question.

Remember that a citation is specific to a Name, Address, and Phone number.

If your friends new store is at a new location, it would be smart to build his GP listing with his correct business name and "new" address. Also, you should simply build citations using the same name and address you used in the GP listing (the new name and new location, and new tel. number, right...)

Make a list of which sites the original store has their citations, and then duplicate these for the new store. It shouldn't take long.

After you have the optimized GP listing and the comprehensive list of citations, focus on reviews. Aim for 7+ on Google Places, 10+ on sites like Yelp and InsiderPages.

Spend a few minutes examining your friends website. Does he have a site? If so, Is it optimized? This is an important area to spend some time on in 2011.

    Best of luck,

    Brian
