Here's my skills and non-skills...what should I do?

I currently own a video production company and can easily create high quality videos for offline customers...from simple photo slideshows to full blown TV commercials.

For many years I've mainly worked the wedding and event niche but now want to expand into offline "business" niche....30 - 60 second web commercials, SEO, online marketing, etc.

My problem is that I don't have the skills to do any SEO work nor do I fully understand things like Facebook fan pages and why they even exist. Although I do have my own facebook page but I rarely log into it.

I do know all about Youtube, though, and can easily upload videos to it.

Soooo here's my list of skills.

1. Can produce high quality videos
2. Can create Wordpress type blogs or websites
3. Can upload to Youtube or create other videos for the web or client websites.

Here's what I'm having troubles with.

1. Understanding al the aspecs of Facebook and Fan Pages such as how to create them and more importantly why you'd create them. What do you do once they're created?

2. Understanding the best SEO practices and getting a client's website on the first page of Google.

3. Understanding Google Local (or whatever it's called) that helps local businesses.

4. Where to put the videos to get more business for my clients.

So basically I have to tools and skills to create the content (videos) but I'm not sure what to do with them once they're finished. Is there any resources out there to help me on that second part or is there anyone here willing to guide me in the right direction.

I don't have any problems outsourcing the online marketing work (general SEO, Facebook, etc.). But I do need to understand these things enough to be able to sell it to my clients.

Thanks.

Mike

WOW you can do a lot with all that experience! I'm not an SEO expect in fact I am a newbie but just find some SEO expert they might be able to help you. How about selling the service of making those videos to warriors who need to put up videos online? I think you have a goldmine as far as I'm concerned. Also you can help clients put their commercials on TV via the google platform... just my two cents!!

First of all, congrats on your question. Knowing what you're good at and your own preferences is a critical first step IMO.

As to your question, first of all, read a lot on the forum on the OVERALL CONSULTING model, instead of just offering commodity work. It opens up your business model to provide more value, position yourself better than pure commodity sales competitors, and you can get more money.

As you don't so SEO and such, it's easy to either

    A. hire people (from fiverr or right here on the WF) to do the work when you're asked to provide it.
    or
    B. partner up with somebody who dors SEO, Facebook, etc., but needs video services.

Find a strategic partner. It's the best solution for you. Of course a local one that you two can present your services together. In the meeting you can tell about what you know, your partner what he knows and every time you can pay attention and learn it your partner's stuff by the way

Mike I would learn each step one by one- just google "how to...." and you can find many idead and advice. Im not saying you have to implement all these steps yourself, but having a general understanding will help guide your business further and allow you to communicate more effectively when you outsource someone for the online jobs.

Its is a pain in the *** learning all these skills, but it pays off when you have a general idea of online/SEO. Also you dont want to get ripped off when hiring someone, many would take advantage of you.

      Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Besides doing a Google search, do you have any reading or WSO recommendations for understanding how to market on Facebook (not only for myself but for my clients) and Google Places?

Either good ebooks or better yet, instructional videos.

      Thanks.

Mike, you might check my signature and look at my videos. They really do kindof "boil-it-all-down" to the basics...and it's free. Be careful of WSOs here, I've purchased a few and the quality is lacking...for newbies, I guess some of them are okay.

I am also a filmmaker and specialize in small business profile videos. I did them for AT&T, Citysearch, and Yelp...which pushed me into the "off-line" arena. I look forward to seeing you on Local Internet Marketing can Dominate Google - LocalDominate! I'm not selling anything there! - Good luck!

          Phil,

I signed up and watched your first video. I have to tell you, for me it was perfect. I have a website for my video business as well as a Google local listing, but I never really understood how both of them can help each other out with ranking.

When I set up my Google local listing a few months ago, I didn't know what I was doing and basically did everything wrong. Now that I watched your video I now understand how to do it right....and more importantly....how to set up my future clients Google Local listings properly. I'll be going back to fix mine and hopefully start seeing some ranking results.

Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to watching the other videos when completed.

          Mike

P.S. Could you please PM me the software you used for the animations? I think I know which one it was but not for sure.

    Hey Mike,

A great resource to learn all about Facebook marketing is Mari Smith. At the very least check out her blog and follow her on FB, and you might want to invest in her book too.

Once you learn more about what you can do with FB, Dave Cisneros here has a few great WSOs about creating fan pages here that you might want to look into.

    HTH,

    Steve
