OK, we gotta hurry cause you need to put $500 to $1,000 in your bank account before the bank closes this afternoon. No Problemo -

I'm going to give you this simple little technique that you can use anytime you find yourself short, want to invest in the latest $197 online marketing course, or just need some extra cash to tide you over until all that AdSense money comes flooding into your mailbox. :p

How can I be so sure this will work? Because I use it myself and have for years. It has never failed me and, when you learn to do it properly, you will never worry about minor financial emergencies again.

Intrigued? Good. Let's get started...

First, just Google the word "Lawyer", "Dentist", "Chiropractor", or any other profession that has deep pockets (plenty of Moolah) and needs to advertise.

Google automatically knows where you are located and pops up a handy little list of local merchants that fits your keyword. Click on the "Places" button (in the left sidebar of your browser) to expand the list. We will use this for our research.

Next, click on the "Place Page" link to the right of the listing. What we are looking for here are the businesses that have not claimed their Place Page and will be easy targets for our approach. You will know who hasn't claimed their page because at the very top of the listing page will be the comment "Edit this place - Business Owner?" and there will be very little information about them or what they specialize in. Perfect!

Make a list of about 4 or 5 businesses in the same general area that have yet to claim their page and, for heaven's sake, put on a clean shirt will ya? We are going to visit these people who need our help and I don't want you looking like a "Goob"...

If you haven't already guessed, we are going to be offering to claim and set up their page for them.

Don't know how to do this yet? Don't worry, just click this link: Google Places Help everything you need to know can be found here. Trust me. It's easy.

Now, one important thing you need to know before you approach a prospect is that Google has already set up the place page for mobile. Just remind the client that nobody uses the "Yellow Pages" to look up numbers anymore - They use their computers or "Smart Phones" and it is super important to have their page set up correctly with all the vital information a person needs to make a well informed decision to use their services.

A good price point is anywhere between $350 to $500 for this service so, if you need $1,000 just get two clients.

It Works; It's Easy; You Can Do This -

Mike

Looks like a good idea actually. The only thing I will say is it might take some time if you find a bunch of listings who have already placed their pages and have to hunt through to find some who haven't. Good idea though.

Actually, I think you will be very surprised at the number of businesses that have not claimed their Places page. They far outnumber those who have.

One tactic I like to use when approaching a potential client is to show them an example of a well designed page (Usually one I have done for someone else) and compare it to their page which is almost blank.

Its a lot easier to make the sale when they get a visual idea of what potential customers see when they visit their page.

It's a great idea with a lot of potential but I'm not surprised at the # of businesses not yet on Google Places.. at least not in my area.

In my area, I'll bet the majority don't have any presense on the Net. The most some of my neighbors know about the Net is "the Facebook", with no real understanding of what "the Facebook" is.

I opined about a subject yesterday and my neighbor told me to go look it up on "the Facebook". Many have never heard of Google.

(I'm not originally from "here".. I'm from "the Big City"..

Of course, the younger crowd do know what the Net is and what you can do on the internet but technology is still creeping up on the older folks in these here parts.

So, you have to approach this (sometimes) with a double-pronged approach: educate, then sell.

Is there an example you can show of a "well designed page"? Is there a way to make these "fancy", or nicer than just what the average company might be able to do on their own?

Simple for us... Not so simple for them. They will gladly pay our little fee not to have to stumble around trying to learn this on their own.

Remember, we get paid for our expertise exactly the same as a Dentist, Lawyer, etc.

It depends. If you're going after older clients (older doctors, lawyers, etc) they may simply not have the time or internet knowledge to care to do it themselves. You can also offer to maintain their coupon page, make sure it is SEO optimized, etc. What is simple to us is not necessarily simple to others.

Very true.. back in the 90's I charged $50 an hour to set antique dealers up on eBay.. simple enough for me, takes a few minutes, but many have a block about such things.. it's just beyond them. Even when they'd sit there with their notebook, watching my every move, I'd invariably get another call asking me to come back and "show me that again"..

I actually have used several methods, email, sales letter, postcard... But when I just need some quick cash, the personal approach is best.

Most of the time you will be talking with the business manager in the case of a doctor or attorney. Skip the packet of info - Just use your cell phone for demo purposes.

          ^THIS.

Can you please let me know what you say to them? I'm only 17 so I would need to sound as professional as possible because people are very quick to turn down somebody young. Being professional isn't my problem, I just want to know how I would present this without losing the customers interest.

When you call them, would you keep it breif?

How would you go about explaining? Because I've tried something similar to this before and got cut off right in the middle of explaining my service.

Can you give us an example call/follow up walk-in?

Would it be something like this?

          Phone Conversation:

          Me: Hi ______,
My name is ________ and I stumbled across something when I was searching for a _______ today. I was on Google places and I've noticed that you haven't claimed your places page. This is losing you a lot of business to all your competition. Google is the first place most people look when they are searching for professional expertise. Let me tell you what I can do for you, I am willing to set up and design your whole Google places page so when people search the keyword _______ on Google, your page is what will pop up to them. I can show you the benefits of having a page and the downfall of not having one. Is there a good time that we would be able to meet and elaborate more on this?

How's that? Is there anything that I should change?

Also, when would I discuss pricing if he doesn't ask about prices?

EDIT: I'm getting off so if anybody would be able to PM me a response to this it would be greatly appreciated!

I've been aware of this strategy for a while now, and a lot depends on the city that you're targeting. In a bigger city like mine, the majority of the lawyers, dentists and chiropractors have already claimed their Google Places listings. The situation may be different in smaller towns, but from what I've seen many of the high-value big city businesses have already been approached about this.

      Paulie,

Don't assume they have been approached - Do the research.

This was from the 1st page of results from Oklahoma City for the keyword "Attorney" -

      Hall Estill: Farzaneh Amir M

Google Maps - 1 review - Place page
Home - Hall Estill - Tulsa | Oklahoma City | Arkansas | Washington DC Full Service Law Firm - Ste 2900, 100 North Broadway Avenue, Oklahoma City - (405) 553-2860

Still unclaimed - Bet he'd love to catch up with the rest of his competition for a measly $500

Is this service free to the owner by google?

    or

do they have to pay to be placed verified?

I am not sure I understand the benefit to the owner. For instance, if I google, chiropractors + county, (or city etc)... I will see the business name just like their competition(the only difference is the owners I target isn't verified).

How important is verification? What's the benefits of this to the owner again?

      Hey Janok,

Yes, the service is free. I think it was way back in 2002 when Google came up with the idea of making a free page for all existing businesses. They get a free web page that is automatically set up to interact with mobile devices - The only problem was, not many businesses know about this or how important it is to their marketing efforts.

The difference between an owner verified page and one not claimed is the Content. Unless the business owners claim their page and completely fill in all of the pertinent data, their page will be all but useless to people searching for their service.

Our job becomes simply educating them on the importance of local mobile marketing and getting them up and running.

That's brilliant! Also, I know this would work great in my area - most of the folks around me have internet but aren't very savvy when it comes to doing anything except pointing and clicking. I'm sure it's the same for a lot of folks out there. The thing that's nicest about this is that it will never run dry - most local markets will have a pretty steady flow of new business ventures opening on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing that - I think I'm going to try this out tomorrow.

This is a great idea! I think the key to getting out of such situations is taking action

I was in such a situation just 2 weeks ago.. I needed 400$ urgently.. It wasn't really a life or death situation, but I was still pretty desperate.

I started by writing articles on Fiverr, tried some offline marketing through flyers for some CPAs and I ended up creating my own WSO. I am about to launch it and I hope it will bring me much more than 400$.

People in similar situations might take other paths, but I think that the key is to take action.

Mike: This looks like a great door opener and a way to make some quick cash.
    Here's a couple of questions:
If a business has a fair amount of information in their places listing, but hasn't been "Verified" are they still a candidate?
Is there some ranking or improvement in their listing after claiming or verifying their listng?
How do you handle the Verification by phone when Google needs to contact the business owner to confirm?
Thanks for your help and great system....Tim

    Hey Guys,

Sorry it took so long getting back to you -

I hope you have had some success with this little money maker.

    Antonios,

I don't know where you live, or which browser you are using but, if you are in the U.S., it should show up.

If you don't have a physical address, you can use a P.O. Box but, it has been my experience that Google doesn't like this and it will be harder for you to rank well.

    iRunThis,

I Never Cold Call! I have a thing about phones - Most of my sales come from face-to-face meetings.

Not long ago, I walked into a tobacco store and was lucky enough to run into the owner...

Me: "Man, I am glad to finally find someone selling electronic cigarettes. (This town just recently passed an ordinance against public smoking) I'll bet you sell a lot of these things."

Owner: "Yes, we do but it looks like the interest is starting to peter out."

Me: "Nope - It's just that hardly anyone knows you've got em. Looks like none of you guys are advertising."

    Owner: "What do you mean?"

Me: "Look... (I pulled out my Blackberry and searched for electronic cigarettes through Google) ... See! None of the tobacco stores even mention that they are selling these things and... WHOA! I just noticed that you haven't even claimed your Google Place page yet. Man, you need to fix that quick."

This little exchange didn't just open the door for me to hit him with my proposition - It kicked it open right in his face. After I explained that nobody uses the Yellow Pages to find stuff anymore and how with some work he could have a "Kick Ass" Places Page that lists exactly what he has to offer the rest was easy.

My trick (If you can call it that) is that I don't try to sell them anything. I just explain what they need to do and let them approach me about setting it up for them. I quickly establish myself as an expert through the explanation.

    Tradewinds,

Yes, they are still a candidate because in all probability, their site is not properly SEOed for the keywords that they want to rank for.

I am glad you brought that part up about Google's verification.

Immediately after you claim their page for them, Google will give them a phone call and will give them a verification number. The Owner will then need to call you and give you the number so that you can start the process.

    Hope this helps some -

    Mike

You are right to some extent Aira...I'm from West Africa and I think our professionals are even more elusive. But before I left I still managed to convince a handfull to set up blogs. So I guess it would depend a lot on you and how persuasive you (your copy) is.

    This is definitely Gold.

Once you get going you don't have to
stop. It sounds like it would even get
    easier with everyone you complete.

Maybe do some for free to get a few
testimonials and practice in then off
    to the races.

Don't forget to have a list of other
services page so some can upgrade
without you having to do any more
    selling.

      No genius just a Warrior

The truth is, most people who have been with this forum for any length of time have already amassed enough knowledge to make a living with their PC and internet connection.

The problem is, they just can't see it.

      Fer Zample:

I used to think that I didn't know enough about SEO or Web Site building to offer that as a service - WRONG!

You know way more about those things than the average business owner who doesn't even know how to go about getting a Domain Name, much less getting a site online. That is valuable knowledge; knowledge that they desperately need and are happy to pay for.

And incidentally, even if you don't know how to do those things yourself, the Warrior Forum is an excellent place to outsource those services and still leave you a handsome profit.

I do appreciate the compliment though.

This is great stuff. 2 questions:

What is the least intrusive way to set up an appointment with the more busy of these deep-pocket professionals? I'm not sure how happy a doctor is going to be to hear an offer to set up a sales meeting, or how keen he will be on agreeing to anything during the meeting. (maybe the trick is don't target doctors).

What is the best type of local business (that probably has a business on google's front page just for being that business) to target for offering SEO web-building skills?

great stuff. I like how you have a simple conversation with the business owner using your phone.

Been looking into this more. Google has some excellent training videos on their youtube channel and one very professional introduction video that you could show clients if in need of more visual help. (search youtube for 'google places' to find their channel)

One thing I did find out, is that sometimes Google lists 'postcard' verification as the only option, removing telephone and sms verification options for some listings. (see note at the bottom) Ive also seen a LOT of businesses complaining that they did not get the post card with the verification pin, weeks even months later after requesting multiple times. So their listing never goes live...

Have you run into this often? Has this caused any issues in the service you provide?

I can see this being a real issue in the case that you've collected the fee upfront and the listing takes forever to go live.

        * a note from the places verification page:

Not all verification options may be available due to several reasons:
(meaning that postcard verification is the only option)

        • The mailing address or the phone number do not match the listing, meaning our records indicate different information than what you are providing
        • Too many businesses have been verified with the same phone number or the same address

You might try the "I was looking for a doctor/lawyer/realtor and I noticed your office is one of the few not yet listed on Google Places" approach..

You don't have to go after those with deep pockets.. lots of clients for mom & pop businesses, etc would be glad to pay $50 to $100 a pop if you can show them how they'd benefit from a listing.

Be sure to clue them in on how QR codes can help pinpoint their business on the map and the Web.

It's actually a "Places" link on the left in your browser, click on that and it will load a listing of businesses in your area. To the right in each listing is a "Place page" link. Click on that to view the actual listing if it exists.

I searched for Podiatrist and, as I predicted, most don't have a page listing.

This is a good, simple offline method for people to make some money within a day or two.

Though I think the approach and sales pitch should be tailored to each business because for major cities, the business owner isn't actually on site sometimes and you run into salespeople/ employees who just want to know if you're going to buy something or not. They don't really know or care what Google Places is. An approach that works somewhere may not work everywhere, especially during busy times.

Any advice on what to do in these situations? I'm thinking emailing people will be a good way (a bit slower though) as here in New York a lot of lawyers and doctors offices are located in office buildings where you can't just walk in. Pizza places might work better with the walking in cold approach.

I was also talking to a business owner who I'm creating an ecommerce site for and he didn't understand the value of a places listing. How do you convey the value to them when they don't "get it"?

I need abit of clarification. I understand that we are claiming their free google mobile Places Page(Content) but when I use my iphone and google dentist, where do I go from there to show a potential client the difference between a owner verified vs not claimed?

I like that video too... I have it on one of my websites...

    @ Paulie....

Earlier in this thread you mentioned bigger cities already being claimed... there is some truth to that... YellowBook offers Free Google Places Verification to their clients. Then they pitch them on SEO.

Selling Optimization Services works just as well. Gives you a Unique Selling Proposition. Yes... Your page is verified... but... is it optimized for maximum performance? Would you like to increase your rankings? We can do that for you...

Another thing.... Paulie... What about Yukon, Mustang, Midwest City, Edmond, Guthrie, Moore, Norman, etc... Like a sub niche within a niche.... There is plenty of business there for you.... and not too terribly far away.

    @ Mike...

Thank you for posting this thread... I really like the simplicity of just using your phone.

Makes total sense to me... I was eating at a resturaunt and googled the location....

Before I walked out I had an appointment with the owner for a redesign on a terribly outdated site... So you never know what's going to happen.

If that doesn't remind people about opportunity being everywhere, nothing will. The concept is simple, helping people and showing them value right there. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the info but am I missing something here? I googled "pizza" and yes, many of them are unclaimed in my area.

I then used my iphone and tried "pizza". Guess what, the same places came up, all with phone numbers addresses etc.

Now if someone came up to me and said I should claim my listing....hey I can do it for you for $xx......why should I pay considering it is already there, already showing up with phone numbers, address etc even though I haven't claimed it?

Are we hoping that business people are not very smart? It sounds great in theory but like all good sales copy, "whats in it for them?"

    Hey Mike

Great post, I use a similar approach when looking for new clients, I don't charge as much as you suggest but use it as an 'in' to get the client and then upsell them on other services down the road.

As strange as it seems alot of business owners (especially where I'm from) still have no idea what Google Places even is! Crazy! and they are quite happy to pay someone to set it up for them.

    Hey Guys,

Some very good questions have been raised about what to say to potential clients who already hold the "Top Spots" in Google Places even though they have not yet claimed their page.

The best tactic to use here, besides telling them that they will soon lose that ranking, is to remind them why people use their smart phones to find local businesses in the first place - INFORMATION!

If they have nothing on their page, potential customers will simply go on to the next listing that tells them what they need to know. Its like having an ad in the newspaper with nothing but their business name and telephone number (kind of defeats the purpose).

Remember, it is very much our job to educate them on this new marketing technique even while trying to make the sale.

Mike....I haven't tried this yet however, I noted in another thread that Google, lately, has NOT been phoning to "verify" but instead, mailing PostCards....which would delay getting paid.

Has Google now (March 15) gone to 100% Phone Verification or still using postcards on occasion?

      Thanks,

        Hey Don,

It is my understanding that the "No Phone Verification" only applies to some areas of the country where Google Places is being heavily worked or your client is not listed and will require a new Places Page setup. But, even if they applied it to all parts of the country, it still will not delay your getting paid. I always get my money up front.

Just make sure that the client understands process and calls you immediately upon receiving the postcard.

Communication is key.... IF for some reason you have not built enough trust with the client... Then you can always get a 50% deposit to get started.... and the balance once the listing is completely filled out... Images tagged, videos tagged, kml file installed on server, etc.....

Which would in all respects be in 72 hours... (or the same day, pending on your schedule)

The op lists a price point of 350-500 for setting up a listing. Does this include creating video or photos to fill the listing or would you only use the clients existing materials?

I always say that if you can even get $100 down , you have something even more valuable which is this:

The next time a web salesman calls that prospect he's going to say "I already have a web guy", and its YOU!

Once a prospect is vested, they are now a client, and as long as you dont blow it badly, you own all of their future business. So taking $100 down for a small service "today" (such as registering a domain name and putting up a mock home page), can mean $1000 tomorrow... A bird in hand is better than two in a bush.

Close them on "something", even if it isnt the whole enchalada.

I tried going over to Google and looking around and I'm stuck because, is that all we do? Because, I can see so many who haven't claimed their listing.

We really collect that much money just to edit their page and fill in information?! SERIOUSLY? I just can't get my head around that.

Don't try to substantiate or defend this claim on your own, just have them "Google" the phrase 'yellow pages usage decline' so they can discover the truth for themselves. Show them that this is not your claim but something that even Bill Gates has stated...

I need a little clarification. Using my laptop I found a Owner Verified Listing in my area, it had pictures, full contact info and content (described the services they offered).

I used my iphone and googled the same search term, found the website, it had all the same info (contact info and pictures) but it did not have the content. It shows the "Categories" then lists "Florist". It seems to be missing the content.

Can anyone help me understand viewing this on a iphone and what a verfied listing should really look like. Thanks.

Listings will look different on a mobile. The good thing about Gplaces is that it is already mobile optimized. So if you are pushing mobile marketing platforms... You have some added value with Google Places. Why? Because they are mobile ready.

The fact that they are already mobile ready says a lot about trends and what you should be pushing...

      Just sayin....

They may be ranked for the short search terms, but that doesn't mean they are ranked for the long tail search terms.... Sometimes yes... Sometimes no.

The more search terms you rank for. The larger your internet presence. The more traffic you will receive. More traffic = More money.

That is if your content contains direct response marketing principles, and has a solid message, filled with features and benefits for the target demographic, a USP, Multiple Calls to Action, and the WIIFM principle.

Ofcourse... there are clients out there that Gplaces won't help because their listings are already done.... That is why I diversify my product offerings. Each business is different. But I offer two packages, both containing 2-3 services, pending on the clients needs. And both raising the ticket value as to not be TOO cheap.

I found that when I was selling my services for under $750, doesn't matter what the service, I would have a hard time selling them.

Then I realized the market value and started selling on value not price. ROI and what not.

My sales went through the roof when I raised my prices!!!

Offering two packages.... $1,500 or $2,250. Both with a complitation of two to three services.

Actually.... Last week I sold a custom face book fanpage to a client with a like reveal script for $1500 by itself. She didn't bat an eyelash as she wrote me a check.

So really, it is a case by case scenario. You just never know.

      Excuse the tangent.

This post was somewhat of a journal entry for me....

But to answer your question, Diversify your product offerings, and you will have no problem when ou run into that ONE client that has a good online presence already.

Just re-read this question after that long post above.....

If they are not claimed someone else can claim thier listing and damage their reputation. It happens.... If they claim it. They won't have to pay to fix someone else's mess, and lose customers because someone posted lies in their listing, negative reviews, whatever.

      Damage Control. Straight and Simple.

Love it! Young bucks are always asking me how to get quick cash versus building a systematic business like I do. I seldom know what to say. This is PERFECT for them!

      Hello Everyone,

I have been reading some post on the off line forum for over a week now and this one seems really good on how to make money.

Can someone please explain to me what does "QR" mean, and is it a website we have to make for the clients we are targeting.

Not sure exactly how to do this though but I would like to try it.

      Thanks for your help.

"QR" refers to Quick Response code, they are something like a bar code with more functions. I suggest you Google the phrase "what are QR codes" and read a few of the posts that come up to learn more. After looking at Google, I suggest you view the video posted in this thread it shows samples of Google Places pages; then do some searching of Google Places to see what a Google Places page looks like. One of your best teachers will be you, taking the time to search different things will lead you to answers for questions you didn't even know you had.

For a business to effectively use a qr code they will need a website and a mobile website.

Or... A Face Book Fan Page. You can use Likify to create a QR code so when it is scanned... It automatically likes your clients face book fan page. Building thier list and creating more leads.

QR codes can be used in soooooooo many different ways it is unreal.

Next time you are at the mall.... Walk into any department store. There are QR codes in price tags and product descriptions.

They are everywhere. Funny though... I never noticed them until I started to use them.

How can the business make money from a places page alone. For example, if they have no website and you don't do any citations or backlinks for them?

If the listing and their info is correct, they stand to enjoy free traffic that they didn't even know they were getting.

Really quite simple. People search the term, product, or service. See the unclaimed listing with no backlinks or website, then call the phone number for more info.

Or they drive down there and buy what they need.

      Simple.

Not really hard to wrap my head around.

    Question..

One place states to only take 1 client per business category per city which makes sense, but say I want to help all 10 businesses for GP setup and rankings.. I guess I will have to setup different keywords for each biz as I can't go after the same keyword for each businesses.

Whats up Mike! It's so awesome that you posted that here. That you did that when you could have easily packaged that up into a wso speaks volumes about you and I just wanted to say thanks!

And to all the folks curious as to whether someone will pay when they can do it themselves look at it this way. Even if they do know how to do it do you know the state that most small business owners are in these days?

The economy has hit the small biz community so hard that many small biz owners are just scrambling doing this that and the other just to keep their doors open. They just flat out don't have time for the internet unless maybe its to go online to pay a bill or to collect a bill.

I'm just getting started as an offliner but have enough clients to tell you whenever I try to talk details to my clients they each say...Honestly, "B' all I need to know is how this will help my bottom line".

So I've gotten to the point where I dont even go into details anymore with them. Instead I just work on painting the big picture-that goes for selling them and reporting progress to them.

The moral of the story is dont make this stuff more complicated than it is.

    Hope that helps!

Forgive me if this is a question that is somewhat stupid. I have found many sites with place pages that are not claimed so the premise of this thread is valid.

2 questions though since I know very little about google places I am embarrassed to say.

    1. how does a business get in the top 7 or 8 or is it possible for a business to move up that list? can you take a place listing from page 5 to page 1 and if so, how? Any wsos on this?

    2. how can a business be in one of the top spots if it has not claimed its page?

    sorry 3 questions.

    3. If a business is coming up in the top spots what real benefit is there to claim there page?

Is it for more information, is it for ratings (don't think so because a place can have reviews without the place page being claimed), what is it?

    Thanks,

    Jim
