Local HBA Show Questions:

Greetings,

The local Home Builder Association has their show this weekend and I was wondering if it is bad form to walk around and hand out business cards and a small package to the vendors, etc?

I really don't have any experience with these types of expos or conferences and trying to figure out the best way to approach it. It feels like this would be an excellent way to pick up a client or two and I really would hate for this opportunity to goto waste.

Have any of you attempted to solicit at a similar show?

The HBA is all about networking and helping people. I would work on a little 20 second "elevator speech" when they ask what you do - and they will be more than happy to take your info and then you have a follow up. Remember your elevator speech is NOT what YOU do it is how YOU can help THEM!!

Instead of "I build websites and help you with SEO" it is "I help Builders increase their lead generation by attracting buyers who are searching online blah blah blah".... this should lead the prospect to ask you "How do you do that"...then you can follow up with details of your service and the benefits.

Alright, so you do recommend going to these types of shows and handing out material? Do you just take a business card? A brief portfolio? How do you approach the different vendors? Just walk up to them and say "Hey, here is my card and this is how I can help you increase your lead generation by attracting buyers...."

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

It's a double-edged sword. It's not in the best taste if you openly look like you're selling to them. If it's an event where they paid to be there freeload networkers are not seen in the best light. But people do it all the time.

My recommendation is to go check it out, meet people, genuinely be interested in learning more about them individually, the association, etc. Have a conversation, not a planned elevator speech. Take business cards but not a package.

If this is a group you'd like to infiltrate then find out how to obtain a list of members, etc. or approach the association with a special offer for their members.
