SEO better then Google Maps/Places?

So obviously doing SEO for offline brick and mortar businesses has became a big thing in the last few years. Are any of you out there who are doing internet marketing consulting getting clients asking you why would they need to do SEO for their site when they already have there google maps/places already and are at the top of google? If so what and how to you explain the benefit to them? I mean it seems like a fair question. Also if you see business at the top of google maps/places do you even try and approach them to get them to take you up on SEO services?

    As an active offline consultant myself the answer to your question is that I don't trust Google Maps/Places as the end all be all for SEO. Truth is, you can't rank #1 on first page of Google consistently if you just have a Google Maps or Places page. There are too many other SEO companies that are eventually going to knock your business off the top "7-pack" listings and you have to SEO from other directions to stay there for the long term.

    Plus, an offline consultant can sell other services like opt in box/email capture, redesign for easier navigation, research of local keyword/keyword phrases, social media management, etc. The list goes on.

    Just because a brick and mortar business tells me they are already on first page of Google, the work just begins on how I can assist them.

    Sure they are number one for that keyword. But there are always more keywords in which the business isn't ranking. Explain this to them, and present a list of keywords that they're missing.
