I started emailing businesses as well and the starting point of my email is that their website doesn't show up properly on a mobile device.
I think this would be an insult to a customer who has probably spent a lot of time and money on their website.

Attitude is just as important as your skills.

I would start by saying they have a good site however there is a new wave of new customers that access sites on their mobile phone.

That you can replicate the style and feel of their current website for mobiles so this new market of customers can navigate it much better and increase their ROI.

Flash virtual tours are going to be a no no, you will alienate all iPhone, itouch and iPad users. Android phones should be able to handle it not too sure about the other handsets.

Depending on how the flash has been done the files can be pretty big too specially if they have audio.

I would approach this with one of following...

1) do like a jquery gallery/slideshow you will need to optimize the hell out of your images though to make sure file sizes are small

2) do a YouTube video instead again keep an eye on length and size

3) do a 3gp video again watch file size probably not best to do HD lol

3gp will allow for instant watching with progressive download on android and iPhones, worse case scenario on other phones you will need to download video before watching it

Mp4 although supported by android, android 2.1 doesn't allow you to view it before it's finished downloading, so you have to download it first then open it in your video player it can be confusing...

Summary watch file size avoid flash...

Doug -

I am much like you in the sense that I could learn to build the sites I just don't have the time and my time is better used in the sales/marketing side of this as well.

Would be interested in talking with you how we can collaborate to create some templates together. I also just email Quentin to see if he has some templates that he'd be willing to share or license. Anyone else out there have any templates they'd be willing to share with a sales/marketing guy? I'd be willing to help you in whatever way I can on or offline in return.

Thanks!

Ok, so sorry for the multiple posts but it appears that I'm a little dense. I emailed Quentin and he pointed out there are several free templates in the "templates" section (ingenious right)

My apologies and great customer service! Thanks!

Guys this Mobile thread is great!! Thanks for all of the info being put out. Two things I want to address. First and foremost, I think pizza shops is probably the best niche for anyone looking to start offering mobile services too. Just use your mobile phone and use that great app google places and type in pizza. Look at all that $$$$$ waiting on you. Papa John's is really the only one in my opinion that knows how to use mobile to it's advantage. Now what I want to key on as a group is if someone could come up with a great pizza niche template that could be used for these pizza shops that don't have a mobile friendly site. With this template it would incorporate a way for there customer's to see there menu and mainly place an order. If anyone has any ideas for this please let me know. I looked at most of the pizza shops 10 miles in my radius, out of 10 only 1 was mobile optimized. That is easy money. They are losing out! Once they see how you turned there business mobile, they will want to pay you. Be the one!! The other thing I wanted to share was this awesome webinar from google about mobile. This is some potent information that will keep hope alive!!

Stay blissful everyone.

nice video. I have been targeting pizza restaurants as of lately with much success. I was able to get white label with a company that lets me sale their ordering system and the site is mobilized. Here is a pizza site dibufala.com we did here in San Francisco...put the url in a smartphone.

I have been experiencing with doing webinars for my local restaurants educating them on mobile marketing ect..I have the opportunity to speak to several business owners at one time in the comfort of my home and in the comfort of their office or home...this very powerful method...do 1 60 min. webinar a week and you will be real busy.

That is very nice Scott. Definitely something I am looking for. That's what I'm talking about. A mobile optimized site for pizza niches where there customers can place the orders right then and there. People already know what they are looking for when it comes to ordering. I just want to make it easy and painless. Do you mind sharing how someone can get a piece of the pie with the system you are using?

Guys I really think this is HooooTTT! The only thing is that this costs like $19.99
a month. I love the concept though. If we could find a programmer that could duplicate this and then sell it for you to be able to use this as your own without paying that would be phenomenal. At the same time it is still good for those that don't mind paying a monthly fee because you could triple your invested by selling one mobile site. I think more and developer's will be coming out with systems like this. Just enter in your main website domain then poof, out comes the baby mobile version of your website. Now you can customize it the way you want to. I am in no way affiliated with this website. I just found this today and wanted to share with you guys for brainstorming. It's called bmobilized.com. Play around with it.
What is bMobilized?

The website shows Zonic ordering at the bottom. Wouldnt white label allow you to remove that or put your company name? I searched there site but didnt see any white label offerings. Care to share any more details on using their system?

I want to do a mobile directory that will allow customers to sign up to individual business offerings, thus letting them limited control on how many companies will be sending them messages.

Building a list and selling access to that list to businesses is a great idea that in my mind works better for email - you can combine, say, 30 offers into a single email.

If you have thirty or more advertisers using the list, the number of text messages received might turn off the recipient.

Is mine a valid concern, or am I thinking this to death?

Your thinking to much..just do it..I am..I am having no problems...look mobile marketing is here to stay...yes the landscape changes but text messaging is viable to businesses..plus you have a "Dont Send Anymore" on all messages so they can opt out anytime they want...plus remember they choose to be text...when the business owners get a 97% open-rate and minimum 4% response of lets say a 1,000 text blast its pretty convincing to the owner to continue working with you...its a NO Brainier...If I mean IF text marketing goes south then there will something else more powerful...we are a world of expansion...it never stops... opportunities are every where!

Keep coming around this thread..As I learn new methods for mobile marketing that are making me money I will share it right here... OPEN FOR ALL TO SEE...NO Competition Mentality Here...I am NO Expert just a old guy not thinking to much about why where when..I just take ACTION if I fall I get back up and keep moving forward...You can be a COMPLETE NEWBIE AND YOU CAN DO THIS ALL DAY LONG!!!! once you do it once and your successful well katy bar the door..because now your a Rocket Ship blast off into new frontiers..Its Fun!

You really DO need to have a way for them to opt out. I'm pretty sure you must know that.

To me it sounded like you were saying that you don't need that like you do with email. I was wondering if I was misunderstanding what you meant. Just wanted to clarify.

I've been doing the college thing for well over a year now and there may be some confusion about how to service 30 or so businesses. You're not going to send text messages with offers from 30 businesses a day or even a week. It's one or two per day or you'll have a lot of unsubscribes.

However, if I'm sending out the deal of the day for a pizza place, I won't send another out the same day for another eatery no matter how good the deal is.

Not saying that's the only way you can do it but that's how I think it's fair.

First. Great Thread with lots of information. Thanks.

I have only had a chance to skim this thread as there is just so much information going on here. I was just wondering if anyone had any success with marketing the mobile website design remotely?

Meaning no face to face but either just emails, or phone calls, maybe even video calls if they have it. This way it could be expanded to include more than just your local city.

Also, has anyone had any luck trying the email/Phone Call > Website Video Route with lead capture?

Ie..

Hi my name is .... from ... and wanted to share with you how important mobile marketing is. Please check out this short video here explaining why mobile is so important. It will take just 2 minutes of your time.

If you are interested in making your site mobile contact me... etc. or leave your email address here etc.. depending on which way you choose.

Curious as to how important it would be for the face to face. If not then I could try to expand to other cities as well.

Looking forward to hearing about anyone's experiences.

Hi,

Here is a way you can do it remotely...get a emails of businesses from yellowpages.com or Google Places send them to a invite to a free webinar teaching them how to mobilize their website and attract new customers using mobile marketing...Have a presentation ready it would take to long to write how you can do a power point presentation in here but you get the jest.

That's a great idea that takes it one step beyond just getting them to opt in on your squeeze page. Have you done this before, and if so, what kind of webinar attendance rate (in relation to the size of your overall offline subscriber list) do you typically get?

I got the technique from Betty Walker AKA The Wise Web Lady...yes I have done one I used Facebook fan pages for the webinar education...I sent out 140 emails I got 18 to show up..it took me 60 mins to present out of the 18 4 business owners bought right then and there..and 3 more bought after they called me and asked some questions...I dont like doing fan pages so I outsourced the work...it was test off Bettys method and it works very well...I am getting ready to do another webinar for mobile marketing...putting the presentation together learning as I do!

I charged $397 but if they buy within 24 hours they get it for $297.

What did your email say?

Did you send the emails on a Monday and have the webinar on Tues?

I have always been curious about what time would be the best time to conduct
A workshop or webinar and you did have nice turnout.

Does Betty have a Wso on this?

Thanks Scott....

Dont want to give out the email template since it belongs to Betty Walker...but I can tell you 3pm is the optimal time for the webinar. I dont think Betty has a WSO on this method.

I totally respect that...and 3 pm is very helpful as well.

Let me ask you this, how far out did you start sending emails?

Did you send on Monday for a Weds or Thursday webinar?

Thanks!

Exactly. With this SMS method you really only want to be sending out ONE message/deal per day. Two maximum if there was some really super duper deal that came up. Anymore than this and you start to annoy your list (yes they can opt out, but why make them?). Besides, the more messages a person receives the less likely they are to open or read the content inside those messages.

Think about all the daily deal sites out there. Why are they so successful? The main three reasons are:

a) People love bargains...
b) People love to be part of an exclusive group...
c) Most people have boring lives and receiving that one email or sms is something they look forward to each day...

Don't dilute the suspense and fun by sending out a whole lot of messages. This is not so much of a problem with email but SMS are much harder to ignore as most peoples phones beep when they get one. Yes, this often means a much better open rate than email. But it also means the messages become annoying a lot faster than email would.

There are several ways you can market a service like this. Are they all going to give you the same results? No. Face to face is always going to be one of the most effective ways to sell a service. You have that persons full attention and it is very hard for them to ignore your message. It also means you can gauge how they are re-acting to your message and instantly tailor your pitch to suit them.

But face to face is not for everyone. If you are not confident speaking in front of people then a face to face meeting could actually do you more harm than good. Face to face also limits the amount of people you can contact in one day. You need to know your limitations and work with what you got.

Can these services be sold by email and or phone? You bet ya. But it all comes down to what the email says, what you say on the phone, etc. The sales message is the most important thing here. Get that wrong and it doesn't matter how well you try and sell it to them, no one is going to buy it.

Think outside the box. Sending plain old emails telling someone their website doesn't look good on a mobile device will not get you very far. You need to get their attention and you only do this by being creative and standing out from all the other people pitching to them on a daily basis.

I do agree that getting leads from Google Places and Yellow Pages is a good start however remember that these are the same places all the other offline marketers are getting their leads. So it's going to be a little harder to convince some of these businesses who have been marketed to over and over by offline consultants - that is unless you do something a little different.

Think about all the crap that comes through your inbox on a daily basis. What messages stand out to you? Which messages go straight to the trash can?

You got out and sell mobile websites to small local businesses. Not sure what 'software' you are referring to though. There are templates to help you build these mobile sites. Maybe that is what you are talking about?

Good research but this is something which you cannot use in all countries specially Asian countries. But this sounds very good and money making strategy..

Why can it not be used in Asian countries just out of interest?

We build mobile websites for Asian countries including Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and have agents in China and Europe.

In fact Thailand has a huge smartphone population and building mobile websites for them is increasing every day.
