Hello Quentin/Scotth

I hope this is your mobile simulator below.

Blackberry Mobile simulator

If so, I just put in a website and the way it shows, I have to watch scroll left and right. But when I tested it in an actual iphone3, this is not the case- I only have to scroll up and down.

It is a WP site with WP Touch. I found that surprising.

They are the web standards for mobile websites. To ignore them is just silly. You can use whatever template you like, no one will stop you from doing so. But if you want your site to work on as many devices as possible then following the web standards for mobile coding is the only way to go.

As i said, majority of the templates I have seen do not follow the basic rules of mobile website coding.

Anyway because of all the requests I am getting, I may try and put a package together over the next few weeks that offer you guys some proper mobile templates you can use for your customers. I havent got much time to spare at the moment but if the need is there then I will try and put together some dirt cheap templates for you.

Time for bed though. Ciao!
I would like to see what you come up with
As I am new to this forum I can not pm you
Thanks

Hi Scott
I just want to thank you for this thread... It's been an EYE opener for me!
I've been wanting to learn how to make the mobile sites but never really took the time.

But after reading Your informative thread All Night Long my head is spinning... I can make these with no problem... I just want to get a little more reassurance of the process so I think I will purchase Quentin WSO If I can find it...
Thanks Again For starting this wonderful free informative thread!

Get Quentin's WSO in Scott signature. The second best WSO I have ever purchased, right behind John Durham's Telemarketing one.

Hi abdulsanni

It is a simulator not an emulator.

Basically we use a simulator to show off our mobile sites to our customers. It is really just a browser inside a graphic. If you have a good mobile website it should show up fine in the simulator.

If you want to see how they work in a phone then you need to look for an emulator which usually work on a desktop.

Emulators are in many cases only going to give you an approximation of how a website is going to render on an iPhone or some other device, it seldom gives you an exact representation.

Here's a quick tip for those who are doing mobile marketing and would like to see how a site renders on iPhones - buy an iPod touch to see exactly how sites render (it'd be identical to an iPhone in this respect), it is cheaper and doesn't require a contract.

Anyone know of a mobile phone emulator that works on an iPad? All the ones I know of don't keep the contents of the website within the boundaries of the phone being emulated. Thanks

I have been focusing on real estate agents with good success. Discovered a good way to get their attention - I look to see who's having an open house on the weekend, make a mock up and go see them. I went to three open houses today and made two sales. Best to go right toward the end when all the people are gone and have the full attention of the realtor. Also I have found the younger ones are more likely to be receptive. I hope this gives some of you an idea for another opportunity. Kathi

I've been popping in and out of this thread, so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but a great upsell or just a complimentary service is a QR code implementation.

We are talking about mobile phones here, so QR codes go hand in hand with this.

An example for Kathi (MKBridge) with your real estate clients, check out the attached pic.

This can lead to their mobile site, since they driving by and will be mobile at the time of seeing the sign.

For other small business like restaurants ( which some of you are targeting ), if not to a mobile site, send them where you want with these codes. Maybe a review site at time of payment. This will help for google places ranking. Entice the customer with a coupon on next visit for doing so.

I'm just thinking if you sold them on the mobile site, you can probably easily sell them on this. There are lots of ways to implement these codes for a variety of businesses.

Good Luck

Hi mj

The example you gave (m.domain.com) would be a sub-domain and you can set those up free of charge with most hosting accounts. You can purchase .mobi domains from any domain registration company.

For people driving past it is a lot easier for them to just type in a website address on their phone than have to get out of their car and scan a QR code. Plus there a lot of people who still do not understand what QR codes are for or even have QR readers on their phone.

There are certain places QR codes can be used for great success but I've never found the point in having them on real estate signs. You'd be much better to just have a nice short url on there.

I've always believed in not just trying to push technology on to people simply because it is available. QR codes are not mainstream enough to be replacing regular urls on things like real estate sign boards.

Great idea! I would think that Realtors would be all over this but they are a funny lot.
Kathi - are you planning on doing the on going maint for them as well - adding listings etc?

Hey Ferris we have been using QR Codes with great success.

In real estate we direct them to a full description of the house on a mobile site,

In car yards we have been directing them to full description on a mobile site.

One of our clients produces motor parts for high performance cars and is now printing the QR Code on his products so the possibilities are endless.

We track all the QR Codes and this has shown it is quite popular.

Of course WillR is right in that you have to pick your markets but you just have to look at Google trends to see they are in absolute break out at the moment.

Here are a bunch of video examples.

Here's one I found - Mobile phone emulator (by COWEMO)
not sure if it'll work for an ipad but it does have a few different phone models and seemed to work good for my mobile site.
Other than that, just doing a google search is bound to give you a number of results.
Hope this helps.

Part of my package is supplying the realtors with a QR code for their mobile website. I see that some of agents are starting to use QR codes, but when I scan them, the main website of the realtor comes up on the phone. When I meet the realtor, I show them what it looks like on the phone when I scan their QR code, and then I show them my mock up mobile site - what it could look like when they scan the QR code.

Yes, I offer updates to the listings. This is the one thing that is a sticking point because there are many places that they have to be constantly updating the listings, and this is now ANOTHER place they need to keep updated. One fellows listing page on his website actually looks pretty good on the mobile site, so I am going to link that page directly for him.

Another realtor uses some sort of database program where every place he has a listing gets updated with just one entry, so i want to look into this more. He is very knowledgeable of the power of the mobile phone and wants to get into "geo-locating", where a client stands in front of one of his houses for sale, pushes a button and all the information comes up on the mobile site for the house (based on the gps location). Anyone who knows more about this and could share, that would be great.

My other question is based on a previous thread - how do you link the google maps app to your mobile website?

Glad I have given everyone another avenue to explore.

Realtors are using starting to use QR codes in our market.

One Broker runs a 2 page ad and every home has a QR code.

Smart Realtors use them on signs to direct folks to a video tour and or a flyer.

Remember, Mobile does not replace existing marketing but really does enhance whatever is currently being used.

Yes, I offer updates to the listings. One fellows listing page on his website actually looks pretty good on the mobile site, so I am going to link that page directly for him.

Another realtor uses some sort of database program where every place he has a listing gets updated with just one entry, so i want to look into this more. Thought I read something about Bluetooth marketing? seems like when someone would come up to a house (or eatery) with Bluetooth on they would be asked of the wanted more info. Not too sure about this so maybe someone else will chime in.

Yes, bluetooth marketing has been used in the past however it relies on people having bluetooth on their phone and turned on. I think this is rather old technology and not what you should be starting to use now.

I think in terms of real estate agents, as I mentioned earlier a QR code is not the best way to do things as most people driving past a house are not going to want to get out of their car to go and scan a QR code. Firstly because it is inconvenient and secondly because a lot of people want to keep their interest in the house private.

Another thing to keep in mind is that a big percentage of people purchasing and/or selling homes are older couples who do not even understand this type of technology.

You are much better off using a nice short website url that has a mobile and standard website or using text message marketing where people text a word to a number and they are then sent the information they have requested. People are used to these types of things.

As I said earlier, there is no point just using this technology for the sake of using it. You need to sit back and look at what is going to be most effective for the specific industry you are targeting.

I know from experience that most real estate agents, especially the young ones, are very showy people who focus most of their attention on their image. These guys would love to have the latest technology because it helps massage their ego - not because they have actually sat down and figured out it will have a positive impact on their business.

Some great posts!

Excuse my lack of knowledge...

Is there something out where you can text the opt in person a PDF file?

This would be good for restaurant owners who can send out menus with images of the food or even realtors where they respond by SMS with pictures.

Now thinking about it to get around this you just respond via SMS producing your website URL linked to your mobi image page.

Hi Luke

Lots of mobile users may have difficulty viewing a PDF so it would be better to create a mobile page for that Luke and redirect them to the page.

Hey despite what people say you can add quite a few graphics etc to a page and it should load fine.

Hi Quentin,

Thanks the info.
Not sure if your received my email the other day, I will endevour to purchase your product later today... looking forward to it actually.

Can I ask your personal opinion...

True Local have brought out their new Iphone App.
Do you think it would work in our favour if it was suggested if they incorporate a QR Reader within their app for users?

If they take this into consideration, it would open up the qr code industy on more of a mainstream level and help people like us?

I'm sure theres pros and con's, enlighten us mate.

Hi Luke

Adding a QR Code into an app is sort of redundant as they already are viewing it on a mobile.

QR Codes are really a bridge between offline print material like magazines, brochures, etc to then offer digital content.

Lots of providers like Telstra, Australia post etc are now starting to add QR Codes to their products and this will raise their profile a lot.

Hi Quentin,

I purchased your WSO and think it is great and actually over delivers. I have a question about the script.

1) Other than the logo and image css, what are the other classes for and how are they used?

2) I would like to use css instead of tables... do you have anything on this or templates?

Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger

Just create a sample page and add the script and then go through and add the different classes to see what they do.

As for CSS for tables rather than rewrite them here is a great article outlining it all.

When installing the files in your File Manager make sure you install them in the CORRECT folder. The 'm' folder if you created a sub-directory m.

I learned the hard way last night...

For some reason I installed them in the public_html folder.

Result = Site GONE. Completely wiped out. Good I only spent 8 hours on it yesterday.

Back to square one.

I get the "Fail of the Day"

Your site should be back up if you put all the files back in the correct folder. You shouldn't have to start over again.

Updated my update!!!! Do you ever just want to take a hammer to your own head???!!!!
Forget everything in my post below!! All I really needed to do was to remove the script from my mobile site!!! Not only is it not really necessary but seems to create a conflict by having the script on both sites!
Geez!! Why did I ever think I was to use it on both sites anyway??!!
Sorry if I mislead anyone with this previous post!

I stopped worry about and got on with other tasks. Then today, I decided to take one more look at it. And low and behold, I think I found the problem!
The redirect code I placed in my PC site was not quite "complete" - that is I hadn't placed the .index.html after my mobi domain name!! Now I can't say definitely that this would be "the" answer for others but it seemed to work for me and perhaps something for others having this same problem to take a look at. Additionally,
when I placed some meta tags (description and keywords) on my PC site "ahead of the redirect script" it created the same problem of "not redirecting"; I went back to the source code and moved the meta tags "below" the "redirect script" and it seems to be working fine - again, not sure of this is a definitive solution but guess it can't hurt to keep in mind.
This is the exact redirect code I used:

Placed on PC site:

<script type="text/javascript">
if(screen.width < 600){
window.location = "http://www.marketingbusinessstrategies.mobi/index.html";
}
</script>

Placed on mobile site:

<script type="text/javascript">
if(screen.width > 600){
window.location = "http://www.mobilemarketingbusinessstrategies.com/index.html";
}
</script>

Sure hope it is FINALLY settled and continues to work and can help others as well! Can't believe how much time and trouble I've had with this and as is the case so many times, it turns out to be something so simple!!!
Thanks to all for your help.

I really don't see QR codes taking off as people once expected them to. They are more along the lines of bluetooth marketing, just a fad that I am almost certain will come and go quite quickly.

I may be wrong but they have been around in the US for quite some time now and haven't really become as mainstream as Google once hoped they would. If something can't work very well in the US then I hold grave fears for it elsewhere in the world.

Sure, you could sell a few QR codes to businesses now as a breakthrough technology to help differentiate them from their competitors, but as time goes on I think the results will speak for themselves. The only reason people would be having some success with them at the moment is because of their novelty value. Once they are all over the place people won't pay any more attention to them than they do most ordinary advertising.

Email and sms marketing are definitely the way forward for businesses - sms marketing especially. Stick to systems that both customers and business owners are already familiar with as this will bring the best results. A QR code gives the business no direct advantage. Sure, it may make it easier for someone with a QR code reader who knows what they are doing to access your website, but it doesn't give you any direct way to follow up with those people.

Use an sms system however and ask customers to text a simple word to a number (something people are already very familiar with), your customer is then sent the information you promised them and you now have the opportunity to follow up with that person. Much more effective way of doing things. And this DOESN'T rely on people having to have a smart phone, already having a certain app installed on their smart phone, or having to be right in front of your advertisement to actually get the message.

This is definitely the way forward.

Also in terms of QR code tracking, this can just be done using Google Analytics. You simply create a QR code with a unique shortened url and you can then see all the stats in Google Analytics related to that unique QR code (via the shortened url). No need to overcomplicate things.
