Hi Quentin

I posted in your wso thread but you dont seem to visit that as much as you do this one...

Here's my query...

"We're interested in your product.

How does it work in association with an existing wordpress site?

Is there a code to place in the wordpress site?

So when a visitor to that website is using a smartphone the site auto detects and switches them to the new mobile enabled site?"

Regards

Phil

@phil your right you can add the mobile detection and redirection script into your wordpress template and have the browser redirect to your mobile site - there are also wp plugins for this too...

"DOUBLE PHONES"

I can't find this answer. Spent 2 hours looking. Great comments.

Can you send the link or pm the answer. I purchased and LOVE Quentins scipt. I see how to make it display one phone script but how do I make it display old and new side by side.

Thanks

I read all of the posts here yesterday and today, after my eyes stopped bleeding, I ordered Quentin's course. A few minutes ago, my wife mentioned pizza for dinner so I used the "around me" app on my Iphone and every pizza shop that this free Google app populated shows the map then when I go the the sites, the page is framed with a photo or two, reviews, a browse nearby section of other businesses and at the bottom, it has View Google in:mobile / classic. Does Google automatically do this?

Hi Phil

We build custom mobile website pages but if you want to use wordpress wptouch is a good plugin. There are some great ones around as long as you keep your wordpress site simple.

As you said rideotm its an app which means only if you have the app however you can see any site on a mobile just depends if you like zooming and scrolling.

Plus what if your customer is not a pizza shop?

Dave thanks a lot for the email script. It's great and i will try this these days and i will also combine it with some of Quentin's method.
Did you got any client until now? I'm trying to stay 100% over email + phone(US Toll Free number) cause i can't really meet people to show them how their site could look like.
I'm looking to outsource the selling part of mobile websites at the moment, if anybody have any idea that would be great.

I used daves email with a twist...added a quick jing video for the client showing his site on a mobile phone simulator from Quentin's email method in his members area and landed 3 new mobile clients...I also put in the spypig code in the email and called when they opened it which helped, never left my home.

I think I found my answer:

"Hi my name is Scott I am a local business owner that helps businesses get new clients, I noticed you do not have a mobile ready site, you could be missing out new business...I like to meet with you for 10 mins and show you a one page mock-up of your site on a mobile phone and how this can bring you new business.

Scott,

Thanks for all the amazing information collected in this thread (by you and others like Quentin and Will), it is something that I check at least once a day to learn something new.

I have a quick question for you, since it looks that you have a lot of experience regarding mobile websites for offline businesses. Is there any particular trade / specialty that you found easier to sell your mobile websites than others?

Thanks for your response,

Efren

Hi Efren

Our main customers have been mechanics, printers and promotion companies so I guess there are lots of different segments available.

Dave,

Thanks for sharing your script in the WSO forum. Works really well.

Does anyone know of a way to check if a website is mobile enabled through the computer? I know it's best to check on a phone but is there a way to check online via PC as well?

Thanks.

I guess this thread is about to get closed. Because the same questions are being asked now. I know 19 pages are a bit long but you would have found an answer to your question if you took your time to read the whole thread. Besides, you would learn a lot more useful stuff in a couple of hours. There are a lot of highly valuable contributions from fellow warriors.

@Dave

if your talking about checking to see if a regular site is auto redirecting for mobile devices - there are a few things you can do to check if it does...

1) if a site is using a script similar to quentins screen size detector

a) you can either look for that code within the source... which can be extremely confusing if your not used to looking at code!

b) you can simply resize your browser to see if it auto redirects you to the mobile version of the site

2) if a site is using mobile phone detection you will need to

a) look for the code as above

and/or

b) use firefox and get a plugin called user agent switcher... this will enable you to send different headers to the site you are looking at and pretend you are looking at the site using an iphone, android, blackberry, ipad etc... in order to do the latter devices you will also need to download the additional profiles

if the site is using an agent switcher it will either prompt you to redirect or auto redirect you to the mobile version of the site...

Agent switcher can be found here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...gent-switcher/

I personally prefer to implement and use device detection over screen size detection as it lets you handle the different types of device limitations in different ways. For basic html mobile sites its usually not needed though, but if you want to add things like video and want it to play across all devices its highly recommended!

hth

jay

@Nail - i dont believe the above question by Dave has been discussed before? I know you can look at a site in a web based emulator to see if it works - but i am not sure an emulator will do the redirection or detection in an iframe so it auto goes to the mobile version of a site?

can someone confirm if opening a web site that has say quentins screen size redirect script in one of the many web based phone browsers does it auto redirect you to mobile version of the site?

i came across a site yesterday that auto detects the iphone user agent but not the android - the main site has flash when opened in an iphone as it directs to a folder called /iphone if you try the site at say http://www.testiphone.com/ it doesnt redirect the site to the mobile version however if you use the user agent instructions as i mention above it will... the site i was talking about is www.sushizushi.com

checking to see if a business has a mobile site already will save you time and also a potentially embarrassing conversation!

Jay, I would be happy to tell the exact # of the post on this thread which I talked about a tool to check exactly what you and LocalSEOEntrepreneur asked. But it will not prevent same questions keep coming in. Do you really think I would write the above post if I wasn't sure this has been discussed before on this thread?

@Nail

I've read this entire thread and no where did I see mention of the user agent redirect that Jay mentioned. Yes, I could go to iphone tester but that doesn't determine if there is a redirect - it only loads the site in a framed browser.

So - sorry that I annoyed you but it was helpful....at least to me, and I'm a newb so who knows.

@Nail, i appreciate what your are saying...

i have been trying to follow this thread as best as i can - i probably just need a refresher as i still dont remember it being discussed... i know there are multiple posts about how to implement redirection but not so many about checking to see if an existing site for a potential client has a mobile detection script implemented already... its not that straightforward to see if a potential client actually has a mobile site or not if you are not checking for it with a mobile device.

Since this thread started i have the addition of my baby girl and days and nights of no sleep! lol if i cant even remember what i had for breakfast right now which means i have got no chance of remembering something like this!

I would genuinely appreciate the link not to prove anything but to see if there are other methods discussed that i may have missed or simply forgotten that would be helpful and save me time in the future!

Like wise do you think i would waste my time to write in detail the methods i did if i had thought it was already duplicated information - am super busy right now! lol i got diapers to change and money to make! lol

This is a site that I use to check "Mobile Friendliness", at least looks pretty impressive if you include some of the images in a report for a potential client, with a third party assessment removing me from the judgement.

I checked the link.
That's for only the script. I would rather buy the WSO content since it has a lot more information and I believe the script is also inlcuded.

Or am I missing something?

You will be gladly surprised of the amount of information provided, not only the script but templates, videos and tons and tons of information, including a Forum for its members, for only $33.50.

Hope to see you inside,

Efren

P.S. BTW - This is the former WSO.

just fyi this was originally designed for checking against NON smart phone design criteria... so some of the errors it gives you may find that are non relavent if the site is being displayed on a smartphone like a droid or iphone

I would genuinely appreciate the link not to prove anything but to see if there are other methods discussed that i may have missed or simply forgotten that would be helpful and save me time in the future!

Like wise do you think i would waste my time to write in detail the methods i did if i had thought it was already duplicated information - am super busy right now! lol i got diapers to change and money to make! lol

Jay, the post I mentioned is here.

That tool is a really nice one. One last word and this is very important, a mobile web designer shouldn't deliver the mobile site before he actually tests it on a real mobile device. No desktop software can replace a mobile device.

Nail you are totally right.
I always test my sites on 2 different types on smartphones(iPhone and Samsung Galaxy) to see if the layout comes right, how fast they're loading and if everything works like it should be.You can't miss this step or you're be losing business.

I had an email this morning from a used car dealer that runs ads on tv. I have been talking to him about text marketing and offered him a free QR. He has asked me if QR codes can be captured on the tv. Anybody know? He wants to pitch a car and point to the QR code which will be embedded in the corner of the video, not on the car itself, for additional information.

Luke,

I've used spypig as well and it seems to only work when the email is opened via a traditional mail client like outlook or similar. When opened via a web mail type like gmail, yahoo, etc it doesn't seem to recognize that it was opened. Unless the person clicks to download images, which most don't.

Haven't tried any of the others that @banditu mentioned, anyone else try them?

Congratulations on making some money in your local area building websites. Just one question, what exactly do you mean by 'mobile' website design? Do you go to their place of business to actually build the site?
Jus' trying to understand.

You don't go to their place of business to build the website. You build it on your computer and then show the business owner. The difference between a mobile website and a regular website is that a the mobile website is built specifically to be viewed on a mobile phone(ones with Internet access). If you try to view a regular website on your mobile phone, you will have to zoom in and out a lot in order to navigate the website.
A mobile website will have a nice layout where you will not have to zoom in and out of the screen to read the text that is on the website. You just scroll up and down to read the info. It's a much cleaner look.
If you are interested in it, I suggest you read the thread. It has taken me 3 days of off and on reading but I have learned a lot!
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed their info!

Hi Quentin,

I just went to your mobile creation software site. You might want to change the testimonial as it's a young lady that can be bought at Fiver.com.

I'm just saying . . .

Patrice

Mobile website design is a term used for websites that are specifically designed to be viewed on peoples mobile cell phones, theses sites have a completely different design approach from regular websites and are usually a lot more lightweight in comparison both with content and design aesthetics.

Typically non mobile ready website designs force the user to zoom in and out and pan around on their phones to see the content - which is not a good experience. Additionally they are usually slow to load and take up bandwidth which can be costly. Mobile ready websites have the opposite attributes.

It has nothing to do with your physical location and your clients where you design the site

hope that helps

Yes, QR codes can be captured from your TV just like they can from your computer monitor.

it will be much more useful and easier if they are on the screen long enough so as you got time to pull out your phone and scan them though! lol

although personally if i am watching tv - i dont think i would be bothered unless there is some decent call to action or whats in it to for me bargaining power...
