Hmm thats strange because thats almost opposite to what google says in another conference so do they really know what they are talking about or are they just the individuals opinion.

Of course the best way to test this is set up Firefox as a mobile browser and go use their search engine. My sites all came up fine and they do not fit their criteria at all.

I think what Scott says is true however in my thinking this is the wrong question.

The question should be which businesses have the biggest lists.

You see today I did a relaxing deal with a supplier to saloons. I will probably pick up 3 to 400 sites from this one meeting.

You are right Quentin it's kinda weird, its like the opposite of what Matt Cutts said, but this is coming from the guy behind google mobile... what i dont understand though is why google isnt using a smart phone mobile agent with the crawl bot - according to the comments from google they are saying they ignore mobile websites that are not mobile compliant for older phones and pass it through as a regular html site... if thats true then your losing page rank value as the OP discusses, and you would need to implement canonical ref on all your subdomain pages to point back to your main site if the content is the same....

Quentin - are your sites that areshowing up in the SERPS listed with the m. subdomain or as the actual main domain... not sure which mobile detection script you are using but i know in the past you had mentioned you where using the javascript screen size detection, as far as i was aware if google was crawling your main site it wouldn't detect the mobile version at all since it wouldn't trigger the redirect...

Personally i would have thought if someone was searching on a mobile device - and they where a little mobile savvy they would opt to click on a link that was prefixed with a m. subdomain... or something similar that references it as a mobile friendly site...

@Wiilr did you see that google post what do you think about that?

i am going to starting deploying mobile friendly sites now with both smartphone and old school phone validation along with a google mobile site map see if i notice any changes with regards google mobile serps

I add all my sites to Google Webmaster and also analytics. I use Wills script for redirection, also a wordpress plugin and also a service.

Does not seem to pick up either just all normal searches. I did it in Firefox with the plugin to represent the phone.

Did lots of searches on my phone and they are all normal sites so go figure. I dont think they have it worked out myself.

Even if I look for youtube videos it does not show their mobile site.

How I am getting my referrals is after I have completed their mobile site and they are happy with the work I just ask if he knows any other business owners that would benefit from the services received. I have gotten many referrals just by asking...I do this in person not on the phone.

Cold Calling might work. I need to practice it a lot more as I'm not nearly as good at it as ScottH but I can see it working.

I used Scott's script and am going to modify it a bit - or modifiy how I say it, I come across too sales like when I say it so I need to fix that.

So the results...only had time to call 10 businesses this afternoon but got one appointment - kinda, she was really hesitant and I just asked her what time she was there on Monday. She said 2-6. I said I'd be there during those hours and she said ok. So, who knows if it was just to get me off the phone or what but at least its a start.

ScottH - what's your mood when you do this? Are you just totally laid back, or are you sales like, or neither? I think the script is good - its something I'm doing that throws them off.

Thanks!

Scott,

When you call these businesses do you ask for the person in charge of marketing/advertising or the owner of the establishment? Most of these places it won't be the decision maker picking up the phone so how do you get around the gatekeeper to be able to speak to the person who is the decision maker (and/or owner)?

When you call do you say "Hi, could I speak to the owner or person in charge of marketing, etc..." before going into your regular pitch to them? Also what do you say when the gatekeeper says "what is this regarding?" , etc.?

Also when you are done with your pitch do any of the businesses still want to know more about how it will increase their business by having a mobile site? What do you tell them in order to be able to close the phone call and get an appointment?

How are you picking which businesses to call?

Do you guys think it's a good idea to target those that advertise in those valpak coupons or those monthly local magazine that many restaurants, salons, etc. advertise? We know they are spending money on advertising and so it won't be as hard of as sell. It would be just going to their site and seeing if it is mobile ready or not and then calling them?

mrtrance,

no, I haven't been asking for the head person only because that makes them even more suspicious. I did get a few people that said "oh, you need to talk to XXX..." after I made my little pitch and I like that better cause now I can say "XXX, I was talking to Dan and he thought I should talk to you" so it's a little warmer than just calling and trying to get around the gatekeeper.

Still needs work but there's gold here

So whoever picks up the phone you start right away with the pitch and wait for their response afterwards...whether it's the actual owner or if they are not the decision maker then they refer you to that person?

Hi Scotth,

Great thread. Since you are already selling mobile website design services, did you ever try offering them mobile marketing services?

I know a friend of mine who helps businesses by managing their email marketing campaigns here in Ireland. There is something called Uconnect, you basically buy SMS credits with them, then resell these credits (plus the set up costs, printing, marketing, etc.) to local businesses.

Do you have such an upsell in your services? I think there should be several other mobile services they might be interested in. QR codes maybe?

Just picked them at random for the most part.
Honestly, it doesn't really matter who you call....I've been stalking this thread for a couple months trying to figure out everything and finally realized that I don't need to know it all I just need to take action.

Nice ACTION Taking You will have success just dont STOP! I am very laid back because I know that I am going to get at least 2 appointments each day 4 days a week I call 20 businesses thats 8 appointments and 2-3 sales. Its just consistency.

I ask for the person in charge of marketing or ask for the business owner by name. I live here in San Francisco and when I call spas, hair salons the person in charge of the decision is there more often than not.

Keep doing it no matter how you feel...you will see success its a Fact.

What is on your one page design?

I assume
-Header

-Biz address
-Link to main site?

I plan to pick up the phone tomorrow and start setting up some appointments. My goal is to sell 2 of these this week.

For all those looking for mobile redirect code Here is some of the magic we use in our platform:

If you're looking to redirect poeple that access a desktop website with a mobile device, add this code between the <header><script>....</script></header> section of your website's HTML to auto detect mobile devices and redirect them to the page you built with us.

Code:
<script>
    function detect() {
        var uagent = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();
        var mobile = false;
        var search_strings = [
            "iphone",
            "ipod",
            "ipad",
            "series60",
            "symbian",
            "android",
            "windows ce",
            "windows7phone",
            "w7p",
            "blackberry",
            "palm"
        ];
        for (i in search_strings) {
            if (uagent.search(search_strings[i]) > -1) mobile = true;
        }
    }
    if (detect()) window.location = "http://mobile.gomo.io/";
</script>

Just replace if (detect()) window.location = "http://mobile.gomo.io/"; with the right URL for your page sooo like this:

if (detect()) window.location = "http://sitename";

here is a screenshot of it if that helps:

Absolutely - we always create a mock up mobile website when approaching a client. Just a one page site will do with your prospective clients logo,and information. You should also have working "1 click or tap" call and email buttons with the clients details as this is very effective in helping close the sale.

You could use some templates that are floating around here and put the business logo and some info there or you could hire someone to help you out.

I own several wide format to small format printers and vinyl cutters to do t-shirts and other items however I outsource most of my work and that allows me to concentrate on selling. A lot of times most of these local businesses need a few shirts from time to time.

We have our own software that does this for us. We upload the company logo, change the colors, their phone number/email address and its done.

We have a white label mobile website service and as part of that you have access to the mock mobile website creator. If you want to know more pm me or check out my signature link.

Thanks, Mark

Hey all I would need to have an advice.

As I will have three different packages on my site for mobile web pages, I would like to ask you all.

For which services do you have a monthly payment. Because once they purchase the web page. Than that it, do you charge monthly for hosting.

For which services do you have a monthly payment. Because once they purchase the web page. Than that it, do you charge monthly for hosting.

We don't charge for hosting. They already have a hosting package for their desktop site so there is no need for them to pay again. We place the mobile website in a sub-domain "m".

Hey guys,

What do you think is the best way to do the redirect?

According to user agent or according to screen size?

Screen size is better as you do not have to keep up with all the new phones.

Hey Quentin,

This is kinda off the beaten path, but I've gotta ask...Where did you get the soundtrack that backs up your tutorials? I'm dying to know who the guitar player is.
I could listen to that stuff all day!

Sorta of silly, I know, but I'd really like to know who that is.

I purchased the script through paypal but unable to get the link for the tutorials/script. It may be Hotmail is having issues or the spam filter is working too well. How can I get this?

What a willing seller and a willing buyer will agree to, is the truth. It depends on the market and the total scope of your project. I've been charging my current clients $297 but I plan to raise that price for non-clients to probably $497 and on up depending on what they want done.

From what I've read, some companies are charging $1,000+ for them.

I'm using both Quentin's and Will's scripts, impressed with both, especially the after sales service.

Just a quick question for anyone:

I know of several emulators, but is there one that I can export the image created to a jpg?

I want to send a potential client in a Word document jpg's of how their main site looks on a smartphone, and compare it with how the mockup I created looks.
The Word document would also include an article I wrote on why a business needs a mobile website.

Cheers .

I am going to do this, but I don't have the means to actually VISIT the possible clients due to various reasons. I can utilize what I have access to though: telephone, email, Skype, and any free online meeting software.

Will I still be able to land clients effectively? Also, what is the BEST FREE online meeting software to use?

Thanks and peace.

To be honest, you need to figure out the needs of a business and offer them the services and solutions they need...you can't just force them into package deals, no two businesses are the same. Instead just price each of your services individually and give them what they need.

Hmm:confused:

I would like to display those packages on the web page. So in you suggestions it will be, something like " Individual packages are available, contact us and we give you a qoute?"

Hi frujid if you are talking about my script it is in the tutorials. If you did not get access to them just go to the site and send me an email and I will send it through again.

Eduardo I sort of do the same thing but have a base product and everything else is a module. So they can buy the base product and then add things on over time or at the beginning.

It makes it easier than having packages as some businesses might want some things from one package but not others. This way they can build their own package.

So we have a desktop base product and then a mobile base product and the modules just add on.

Scott,

Once you are able to setup an appointment and get there do you just show the business owner the 1 page mobile site of theirs on a smartphone vs their regular website? Once they see that are you able to close the deal or do you provide further information on why they need a mobile site and how it will benefit them?

Do you throw out alot of statistics at them in regards to mobile sites and mobile searches on phones to further convince them to get on board? Do you need to do much selling to close the deal when you meet them?

Any other details we should be aware of if the owner tries to understand why they need a mobile site when talking to them over the phone before making the appt?

I do not discuss on the phone other than setting up a 10 minute appointment with a mock of their site. Once their I show the business owner their regular site on my IPhone than I show them their competitors mobile version while doing this I am talking about how important mobile design is important for their business...when they see their competitors site and then I show them the mock up almost every time I get how much...You have to find your groove when doing this. When I started calling biz owners and visiting them I was very green but as I kept doing it I got more confident and started getting sales. I dont make it to complicated with statistics to the business owner...Thet get it that mobile is important b/c 95% of the business owners I have encountered have smart phones..They know its important and when they see a competitors site is mobilized they just flat want it.
