Local Keyword for SEO?

Hey,

I am optimizing my site for a chosen 'Keyword'. If it is for a local business should I optimize for 'keyword +location' or just 'keyword' and rely on google to know where they are searching from (via .I.P) or Both?

So 'dry cleaners new york' or just 'dry cleaners' and rely on google knowing they are based locally?

      I was looking at this earlier:
      In my G SERPs if I search for just "keyword" I get a map in the sidebar and 7 G Places results after the first 3 organic results.
      However it relys on where G thinks your IP address is, however if you click the map and drag to your location the results will change with it.

      So in conclusion I would say optimise for both, but G moves the goalposts on this every week at the moment.

    keyword + location, this is where you will find the most google ads, and this is where the local businesses are interested in appearing, unless their objective is global.

      While for businesses like dry cleaning that are clearly local you might be able to optimize for just dry cleaning. However, your efforts will be better rewarded if you optimize for keyword + location (or vice versa).

        For local keywords do you guys choose "keyword city" or "city keyword" to optimize that page or site? Is it a matter of which has more search volume? Do you optimize at same time for both variations? Any input?

    Search engines are getting better with local IP search results on a daily basis.

    That being said, I would optimize the web site for all local and generic forms of your keywords.

    Makes for an easy way to create and add content.

    I give each keyword it's own page, then optimize that page for only that keyword.

    Meta description tag, title tag, keyword tag, h1 tag, 300 to 500 word article using the phrase 3 to 5 times with the title being bolded, italicized, and underlined.

    I would write the article with my main keyword, example "dry cleaning," then use that phrase 3 to 5 times and sprinkle in a dose of LSI keywords like "Dry Cleaning + location, or location + Dry Cleaning" once per article, then create a link from the LSI keyword phrase in that article, back to it's own page within the site.

    A good way to find articles to write about, is to use your analytics to see what keyword phrase they found your site with, then use the phrase they typed in to find you, as your keyword for your next article.

    So, if they found you by typing "best dry cleaners in my area," then that would be the title and main keyword for your next article.

    Wash rinse repeat

      I am also prefer you to optimize your website with the keyword + location. For the physical business the keyword + dedicated location is much more powerful than the keyword itself alone.

      will do it both. optimize the two and if you have physical locations I suggest having a dedicated page for each location on your site and a Google Places page for each location that references the local page on your site.

        Well if you want to build local links or build links for a local business the best keyword to use is adding the business location on your keyword.

    If you are specific with what you are going to do and know your business then everything is ok. It is very much effective if you put local along with your keyword. Because you will get exactly your desire audience with goolge ads.

    If your trying to optimize for local traffic from the search engines, then keyword phrases like "new york dry cleaners" would be best.

    If you are looking to attract business from a local area, then emphasize local keywords, including the city, town or suburb name. Anyone looking for that product or service may click through a search to land on the site, but if they live on the other side of the world, they probably won't buy. So, yes, use keywords that highlight the location if the goal is to attract local customers.
