Hi,

I'm looking to start online marketing for local businesses in the UK and I'd appreciate some suggestions for the best markets to target.

Thanks,
Joe

Dentists.. value per customer is high.. and they can offer upsells like teeth whitening which have great profit margins...

Get in touch with you local dentists and ask them how much they'll pay for new customers..!

You might be in for a surprise - and some pain (ouch) dealing with dental practices in the UK.

The average practice spends 2.5% of turnover on advertising - that's not much. It's either because they don't need to advertise or it's not in the mindset of the average dentist.

They are also extremely limited as to what they can say in promo material. One wrong word in advertising copy risks them being put on the naughty list by their regulator. This means that you have to either rely on them writing copy ( not a great idea) or wait for them to get regulatory approval.

Certainly there's money in the market but there are also lots of unseen stumbling blocks.

If you steer clear of the (highly regulated) health, law and financial niches, who are in any case, targeted by all and sundry, you'll save yourself a lot of heartache.

Go for service/product providers with £500k of turnover upwards.

    Tony

I have a friend based in London bringing in £1,000 monthly from one dentist! All he is doing is getting the guy listed on the front page of Google for specific keywords with AdWords and link building!

Teeth whitening is huge at the moment as well - everyone wants to have Hollywood smiles! The UK has such a bad rep that needs serious work!

I had a tooth out the other day actually - hurt so much and I paid for it

Dentists are certainly a good market. But there tends to be competition there. There are a lot of marketing firms that target dentists and many dentists have already signed up with them (sometimes to their dismay).

I would suggest looking for business that have a high average selling price product, have opportunities for upselling AND are in markets where the online competition is still weak. If you offer a service that costs say $3,000 USD a year and one additional sale is say $6,000 they have paid for your service. In most instances if you do your job reasonably well one new client a year is pretty much a no brainer.

Just sit down with your equivalent of the Yellow Pages and look at business that fit this bill. There are plenty, especially in the construction trades industries. Roofing, kitchen upgrades, septic tanks, electricians etc.

Stay clear of more developed and competitive markets at the start.

Most dentists in the UK are over subscribed and therefore hardly ever have to advertise.

My advise would be to go through your local newspaper and contact all of the businesses who advertise in it:

That is an image of my local weekly free paper. Each one of those advertisers pay around £450 per ad.....EVERY WEEK!!!!

If they can afford to do that then they:

          a) are doing well
          b) Recognise the need to advertise
          c) Are willing to pay for marketing.

Your challenge is to show them WHY online marketing is vital.

Once you do that then you get the job.

Don't over-think things by wondering who you should be targetting. Go through your local newspapers and target everybody in there.

You will be surprised at the results.

Not saying it's impossible - just that it's not necessarily the easiest market. Any seo in London should command higher prices. For one it's expensive to live there and secondly, there's a lot more competition for first page rankings.

Outside of the cities - life gets a lot more rural :-)

So that's the next big thing?

Kinda like Groupon but with a much larger audience and social features.

      Thanks for all the advice.

I have been doing research using the Yellow Pages and dentists did come out as my number one option, however I was concerned to find that any decent domain name relating to dentists and cities that are local to me had been taken, although they weren't being used.

I'll definitely be studying my local paper and looking further into construction and trade markets.

      Thanks again,
      Joe

Try not to over-think things and second guess the market too much Joe.

There have been a number of businesses where I have been very cynical and thought that I am not going to get any business and was pleasantly surprised.

And then on the other hand, there were niches where I thought that I was going to 'clean up' and get loads of business and it was very disappointing.

Let us know how you get on and good luck

Dentist are good one to get. But always found them hard to get a response from.

I have had good success with trades like joiners and plumbers.

This sounds like a good one - how much are they paying for leads?

London is uber-competitive as the market here is saturated and providers are generally competing on price.

I get emails from providers asking me if I want their SEO services! LOL

There are some great suggestions there; thank you.

Here are a few markets I'm considering that look promising, but I'm not too sure about:

      Photographers
      Hotels/B&B
      Wedding Venues
      Caterers
      Gyms

Do you think these could work well?

Good advice from Abul-Hussain here I think.

It's so easy fall into the trap of trying to get things as perfect as possible from the outset. You can easily end up with "analysis paralysis".

Just take a look at who's doing a lot of advertising in your area and then do some research (using online tools,.. trends etc) and just get rolling and start helping the businesses that are in obvious need of help!

Not every niche that you work in is going to come up diamonds,... but a few will,.. just got to start digging

          Good hunting to you!

Try home improvement companies such as double glazing, fitted kitchens and bedrooms, block paving etc.
Home improvement companies tend to have large marketing budgets and are always advertising in Yellow Pages, Local evening papers, parish magazines, Leaflets etc as they need a constant supply of new prospectives, plus they understand and appreciate the value of a strong Internet presence.
