Things you can do with a Flip Camera

I'm already providing services to local businesses and the major problem is always quality content. I now carry a flip camera and many times I can do a quick 30 second video, pop it up on youtube where they can post it to the facebook news feed.

You can even go into a pizza parlor and shoot a series of videos of the different types of pizza and dishes. Go in for about 2 hours and shoot about 30 different videos and tons of photos and they'll have enough content for about 2 months. Everyday can be a new 30 second youtube video and special for a new pizza or dish. The possibilities are endless. Think about Sushi restaurants. Most people know crap and have to ask about everything on the menu. Why not put up (5)0 30 second videos on your website/facebook page explaining every dish...DAH?

Here's a whole new realm of income streams that are easy to do with a simple flip camera.

You don't need to carry a camera for pictures, simply take them from the videos. I did a whole FB business page from one youtube video for a client.

Great idea! How much are you able to charge for a 30 second video in your area?

I charge a minimum of $50. I convert the video to avi then upload it for them to my youtube account.

I'm charging a little more than that ($75) but I'm using a Canon T2i and shooting in film mode, then converting to MPeg-4 prior to uploading. The truth is, in a better economy we'd both be able to charge more, but people are being really tight with a buck these days.

I also use a T2i to shoot video. Recently did two 2 minute clips for a client at $200 each.

            - Good idea! I purchased 2 Kodak Zi8's. One was intended to be a "loaner" so that the biz could shoot a bunch of footage themselves, which I would later edit. I've only had one biz (dog groomer/boarder) who wanted to do it. Turns out most would rather I do it. I've only offered the service as part of a package, but if I can pick up a quick $50.-$100., i'll give it a shot.

You could get some great mileage from interviewing the customers for 30 seconds, getting them to talk about how great the pizza/sushi is etc.

You get a testimonial video, back link, alt tags all in one.

                @Will & George

I'm thinking about getting a 2Ti but have some reservations. Could you answer a few questions for me?

Are you shooting hand held or using a tripod?

If hand held do you find it tough to hold the camera stable while shooting?

Are you using the camera's on board mic or an external device (like a zoom or edirol)?

What are you using to edit?

                Thanks,

                Kevin

                  Both

If hand held do you find it tough to hold the camera stable while shooting?
Sometimes. The editing software I use has a stabilization function, and works great. Eventually I'll buy a rig that filmmakers use to shoot hand-held.

I'm currently using a lavalier mike, the built-in mike on the T2i sucks.

What are you using to edit?
Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum. I bought the Production Suite because of the extras. The cost was about $99.
                  Thanks,

                  Kevin
I love love love the T2i. You can shoot movie quality videos with it, and the still photos are incredible. The big ongoing expense will be the lenses. You can spend anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars per lens.

What is the sound quality like when using a flip camera.

                    thanks

Phil, it's not all that great and only in mono, but this is really not a big factor as many videos just overlay some type of soundtrack over the existing audio.

Thanks for this great tip. I am pretty sure that a Flip does not offer image stabilization, so do you shoot with a tripod, or just put up with the inevitable minor blurring that comes from the shaking?

Also, do you create a new Youtube account for each of these businesses when doing videos for them?

          Paulie,

Many editing programs provide image stabilization so that might not be a problem.

If I may weigh in on your YouTube question.

Each business should get a new YT account set up and IMO these videos should also go on their site. Not via a YT embed but self hosted (by way of S3 or some similar service). Video info should be entered on a video site map so when prospects search the video on their site appears instead of the YT one.

I'd much rather have prospects coming to the client's site instead of YT.
