AT&T Pushing Mobile Barcodes & Helping You. (QR Codes)

Everybody knows QR Codes and similar codes have been talked about a lot on here and in the WSO section, but one of the knocks on them was the fact that a lot of people don't know what they are or what to do when they see them. Sure they are popping up more places, but the average cosumer isn't used to them yet.

I just came across a banner ad from AT&T that linked over to a full video that introduces them to people and businesses as to what they can do and how to utalize them. It can be very eye opening to business owners who watch the video.

More efforts like this will go a long way to making businesses aware of what they can do for them and make them a lot more willing to pay an offline consultant to help them with their campaign.

Here is the link to the AT&T page with the video. (they did a very good job with it in my mind)

I agree, that was definitely a very good video.

I have a question about QR codes, but I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll post it elsewhere.

    Thanks again.

Goog job indeed. I'll use that for sure! I don't really see them as competitors so I can leverage their video.

    Thanks.

Good video. Entertaining, keeps interest, and shows business owners how qr codes can benefit them.

Definitely something to have in your back pocket.

Hey, thanks for posting that Chad!

That video is a good tool to show what can be done with 2D bar codes, but just to be clear - AT&T is promoting their proprietary Data Matrix codes in that video and there are some big differences between that and the QR codes many of us are familiar with here.

This recent article explains many of the differences, but the two biggest problems are 1) they can only be read with ATTs code reader and 2) they can only link to a URL or vCard information - you can't send an SMS or an email like you can with QR codes for example.

Now I know why none of the QR readers I tried to read a code on a Costco flyer worked last week and I think ATT is only going to confuse and frustrate consumers and advertisers by promoting their system while many others are using QR codes for their marketing.

    Thanks again for sharing that!

yeah i agree with you Steve - i posted about this yesterday but i think AT&T are just going to end up confusing things for the end users - i cant help but think that due to the nature of the generation and reading of these codes its set to fail...

on the upside i haven't checked yet but does their reader read regular QR codes as well... now if thats the case that would be really good especially since i read somewhere they where going to start pre-installing it on their new phones!

Now if i can just make a similar promo video to use on my own site!

ATT are trying to "own" a technology that is otherwise open and widely used - it just won't happen. It's dumb IMO. But the video is awesome.

I wonder though, how to create a QR Code that is showed at the end, when the girl in the office simply scans the code to reorder ink.

ATTs reader (at least for the iphone) does scan regular QR codes too and I think that's a good thing if they're pre-installing a reader on their phones.

Yes, that was interesting and I'd love to know that too, especially since the article I referenced said ATTs DM code can only link to a website or vCard

@jay i would say its very possible to do that but i would certainly not make it as simple as how she does it.. it should require at least some secondary interaction at a minimum ie a pin and confirmation button but it could be done with the correct logistics in place... ie client would need a prepay account or line of credit, or stored CC info/autobilling features enabled, etc

think of it like a pre-paid starbucks card - you scan a qr code it goes to the order page, you enter your pin number and it confirms the sale and it auto-deducts the payment from your pre-paid balance... the business gets confirmation either by sms or email or by scanning the qr code displayed on the persons phone! lol

the qr code for the item could be unique to that store too...

    just thinking out loud

Nice! I like it. I have been using QR codes for awhile to generate targeted traffic. I also have been linking to a youtube video for clients and consumers who do not know what a Qr code is but I like the AT&T one you shared a LOT better. Thanks for the share.
