Told one of our clients yesterday that Mobile is the future.

I went to see a client of ours and told him that mobile sales and marketing is is the future and if he did not adapt he was going to go out of business. I did not mean to scare because it is something I feel very strongly about, especially for small shops that must remain competitive against the walmarts out there.

I told him that most people do not have desktops or laptops but that they certainly have smart phones and these people are making decision on what and where to shop not when they are sitting at home (watching commercials) but when they are out and about and it behooves them to grab these mobile customers however they can. It literally is sales walking away if they do not adapt.

    This is very true.

If you would like to more greatly impact this message and also make sure that you're not using scare tactics you could put some data together.

Find out how many people use desktops and laptops versus mobile phones and smartphones. Explain it when people are out and about and trying to find a product or service or business, even if they have a desktop or laptop, they're going to be using their phone.

Taking just one or two minutes to cover some facts, figures and statistics gives you a more professional appearance and opens the business owner's mind to the greater possibilities of mobile marketing.

I am sorry if I made it seem as though I was using it as a scare tactic; it wasn't my intention. But I was very emphatic about that belief. I truly believe that if you are not mobile marketing you are throwing money out the window; I will see if I can find the article about the trending behaviors of buyers on the go as opposed to sedentary buyers (those at home).

The last I heard, it was about 5 billion mobile devices vs 1.2 billion computers

Of course, in the US the ratio is probably more even, because we are lagging behind in the mobile department.

I would disagree with that statement. People have 2 or 3 laptops, notebooks and desktops combined in their home at present. However things are evolving and it will be interesting to see which technology emerges. Cloud computing is paving the way for the thin client market. I can see a home in the near future that has two or three monitors and input devices such as keyboards and mice but uses a smart phone or other small device to access the "cloud". Then when you leave the home, the device goes into your pocket and you are never offline if you don't want to be.

My wife has the IPOD Touch 4th Gen. It's incredible what that thing can do. She recently downloaded an app that let's her scan all of her customer cards into it. Now when she's at Starbucks or Hancock Fabrics or the library and they want to scan her card, out comes the IPOD. The grocery store has her coupons stored on it. It's all relatively new, but consumers and producers are growing more comfortable with mobile marketing. With that will come better and more sophisticated marketing.

You are right about mobile marketing being the future. Growth in sales of smart phones is showing no sign of slowing. In a Motley Fool video I watched this morning, they used a statistic provided by Morgan Stanley. By 2012, smart phone sales will be greater than combined sales of laptops and PCs.

Taking a laptop to the coffee shop will eventually be the equivalent of having a bag phone in your car as your cell phone.

Our job is to properly educate and explain the benefits of mobile marketing and why it's not an if thing , but a when thing.

I've always thought it easier to find people interested in what you're offering than to try to convince someone to buy what you're selling.

By all means educate people and if you can do it without investing a lot of one on one time that's even better, but I wouldn't spend a lot of time and effort trying to twist someone's arm into seeing things your way. This guy being an existing client is one thing and you can certainly "drip" good information on him over time that may get him interested in mobile, but if this were a new prospect, I'd say leave him with a free report or video to educate him a little while you move on to the next prospect.

    Cheers,

    Steve

I agree with that Steve. Jack Mize did an excellent webinar last week geared toward the newbie marketer. The point was to get comfortable speaking with prospects by giving things away, at least 10 per week. For example, create a flyer with a QR code on it and your name and website, phone number etc. The QR code will link up to a one page mobile website of their homepage that you created. It's a sample to demonstrate to them that you are an authority and a trusted advisor. You educated them on something that they didn't know much about. You didn't sell them. Of course if they like what they see and you've unpacked the benefits of mobile websites and mobile marketing, they may just see you as the person with the ability to finish that site you started.

I think if you visit any business you will find that the majority would be Smartphone users because they tend to pick up technology a lot faster than the general public.

That has been my experience anyway.

Nearly all my customers have moved to smartphones in that last 6 months and showing them mobile websites has just given them an excuse to go get one.

Most of them already know there is a revolution in the marketing world with mobile phones so capitalize on it.

I have yet to find anything easier to sell than Mobile websites. It's like printing money really. Hand them my iPhone, and pick up a check, it's really about that simple.

Exactly, I heard that more people surf the internet through their smart phones now more than ever. It really is becoming the primary source of information for a lot of people.

Great marketing for the mobile media revolution is a company call izigg, or izigg.com. They are a mobile media company that capitalized on branding the short code with 90120.

There business model helped me realize the size and scope of where this is all going.

I think you're overreacting a bit, but it shouldn't matter any if it effects his bottom line.

Mobile marketing is clearly the wave of the present. With 5.3 billion mobile phone in operation today worldwide and only 300 million websites, your customers should get the picture pretty easily. Having come from a mobile start up company that raised $100 million back in the.com days it's finally now apparent that customer acquisition could easily come much more quickly from cell phones rather than websites. The trick is to make sure that the mobile experience is easy, intuitive and "less heavy" then going through a full-blown website experience.

I tried this with several clients. Most liked it but there were some that did not like the fees and complained about their customers coming in and complaining to them about getting texts; so be aware of that and let them know ahead of time.

Last weeks Sunday Times for UK readers.

Internet traffic via mobile phones in Sept 2009 was 0.02%
Internet traffic via mobile phones in Jan 2011 was 8%
Predicted internet traffic via mobile phones in Sept 2011 is 16%

Think it was the InGear section.

PS: Highlight those lines, cut out the article and walk in to businesses with it.

PPS:If you don't have this article look up this sort of thing via newspaper websites search features, print out and do the same. A third party reference will always have more credibility than anything you say. Fact!

I agree! 3rd party is always a help.. they will feel like you did a good research and you have something to back it up. More credibility when you walk in with this when doing presentation for sure.
