Ideas for split testing fliers?

Hi,
I have an offline client who actually gets lot of business from passing out fliers in neighborhoods for his service. He has consulted me to help increase his current conversion rates.

My only real idea is to have different phone numbers on different fliers. But then he has to keep those numbers "forever" so that past customers can contact him.

Does anyone else have ideas on how to split test a brochure/flier? Of course we could ask people what flier they have, but we are trying to avoid that approach too.

Anyone have any creative ideas on this problem?

Thanks,
GabeW

You could put a "promotion code" or an "inquiry number" etc on there..

That's what we do for mailers with one of my clients. We have a mail merge set up on the flyer that enters numbers from 0xxxxxx1 to however many are in the database and then when they call in, they're asked for the number.

Then, the person answering the phone can look that up within the database and "confirm" their information rather than trying to collect information.

It's a lot easier to say: Mr. Jones, I have you at 1234 Fake Street, is that correct? rather than asking, what's your address? It just helps walk them through the funnel a little easier.

Then, we can run a report and find out which numbers called in, and narrow down the areas that had the highest response rate.

Not very sophisticated, but it's definitely getting the job done.

A couple of interesting ways in which we split tested flyers, brochures and other campaigns include the following: the URL of the landing page could be different depending on which flyers you hand out, the URL could also be a phone number, you can add extensions to certain voice over IP systems and the extensions are the actual code representing the flyer. The problem, in general with having a code number that people have to remember is that they never remember. However, if the extension is the code you can actually do analytics on that code very easily to see how many people called, what number they came from and whether they ultimately bought or not.
