Building Your Credibility

One of the challenges when starting out with a local consulting business is gaining the trust of a potential client. The want to know that you have credibility in providing your services. Credibility refers to the objective and subjective components of the believability of a source or message. How does the local business owner know you are a legitimate consultant and not just trying to get their money. Over time you will build credibility, but these tips can help you when you are starting out.

The best way to gain credibility is to write a book. Authors have instant credibility as soon as their book is published. The secret is that many of these books are ghost written with the purpose of promoting the author. You can do the exact same thing and outsource your book about online marketing for local businesses. The best part is that it is easier than ever to self publish a book on Amazon. Then you can tell a potential client that you wrote a book on the subject and give them the link to Amazon. They will never doubt your credibility after that.

Another good way to build your credibility is to do local talk radio shows. Just contact your local radio stations to find out about being booked for a show. Many local shows are constantly looking for local experts to interview. Then afterwards, publish the recording to your website and you have another source of instant credibility.

Next you will want to get logos of different companies and organizations on your website. Start with the national shipping companies, UPS and FedEx and even the USPS. Then put Mastercard and Visa logos or any other payment method you accept. Potential clients will see that you have already been approved by a third party and are trustworthy. Next move on to the local business organizations that you are a member of, such as the Chamber of Commerce or BBB.

Another way to help your credibility is to put a picture of yourself on your website. Also put pictures of you and other important authorities in your area of expertise. It can also help to have pictures of you at a charity event. Then record a video of yourself talking about the services you offer and some specific advice. This will create a personal connection with the potential client.

I agree with almost everything except the putting a picture of yourself on your website. It may just be here in the UK, but when I speak to people about this they say that it's just 'cheesy' and they don't like it. I tend to agree.

When I speak to prospects they nearly always want to know that you're a solid business and putting a picture, like putting a mobile phone number smacks of "one man band".

    Just my two cents though.

This is why I always look at the "principle" and proven methods that work before accepting anyones "opinion" or "two cents" as fact.

It has been repeatedly proven that using a picture increases conversions.

I had the same opinion of people using their picture for marketing purposes, "How egotistical is that?" I would say....

But after multiple split tests and watching major companies use the same approach with great success... I respectively disagree with NOT using your photo.

      Photos build instant rapport.

When I buy a Maytag Dishwasher... In the back of my head I am not doing business with Maytag... I am doing business with the Maytag Man on the commercials and all the print media they do.

I don't think Maytag is a "one man band".

In Tucson there is an Appliance store called Tucson Appliance. The owners son has his goofy face all over their marketing pieces. Why? Because they did the market research and found people like to do business with people. Not entities.

When I am doing business with a person. I have someone to hold accountable if things go wrong.

I have recourse. Even if it is just to bash the guy in the photo.

When I owned a Window Cleaning Company. I was not a one man show. But my face was on all the Marketing Pieces.... People would say... I feel like I already know you. That in itself sealed a LOT more deals than the stellar copy I had written.

Think that it is different in the UK?

Ask Chris about his conversion rate.....

What Amir said I'd have to agree with. Not to mention the fact that every HUGE law firm here in Phoenix always puts their guy's face on the FRONT and BACK of the YellowPages, newspaper ads, websites, TV commercials, etc. So do all the major Chiropractors and Doctors.

Even the Phoenix Suns Gorilla has a picture of his ugly mug plastered all over the Phoenix Suns' Facebook Fan Page. LOL

I also have to agree with you guys.. I tend to think it boost up your credibility and relationship when you put up your picture on your website to let them know who you are. All the pros on affbuzz does it

Yes, I think it is different in the UK. We do a lot of seminars over here and I've asked the question a lot, not one person has said "I'd rather do business with someone who has a picture on their businesscard".

Other's have said "I think it looks cheesy".

We're a bit behind you guys though and a little more reserved!

If you didn't see the pic above... you will see that Chris Galloway in the UK uses his pic.

He struggled with the concept too.

His number is on the flier I posted. Call him. Ask him how much his business increased.....

Tell him Louie The Window Guy from OK sent you...

We both were students of the same marketing coach at one time. The marketing coach is out of Toronto. So this proven principle works in Canada too.

I agree with why this concept works for some business entities - esp those that are building trust/going into individuals homes - it's just when you are offering a business to business service, such as offering online marketing that sometimes it can work against you.

Real Estate Agents, local plumbers, the furniture store guy, the local butcher etc etc - this stuff is great for them - because it's selling to an individual member of the public.

But when you are a one man show with your smiley face trying to convince that multi-million dollar company to buy your $2000 a month online marketing package, sometimes that smiley face can do you an injustice.

Its really about learning your market, whether they are small businesses who want to use other small businesses, or whether they are big business that like the thought of business with larger companies...

I absolutely agree with being focused on your target demographic....

              But...

I disagree with the rest of your post.

Let's take a look at John Maxwell, Zig Ziglar, Ari Galiper etc... These guys are focused on doing sales training and motivation to fortune 500 companies. Are they one man bands? No....

Do they use their face for branding effectively.... Yes...

Are they dealing with fortune 500's.... Yes...

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Do you really think John Maxwell can push out THAT many books?

              Nope....

Totally agree with this also... Pictures are great if you are a figuehead, or established authority - but a picture of an individual screams one man band...

It does help to write a book (I wrote to amazon best sellers) but not a must. Also it takes a little while to set this all up.

    Here is a faster approach.

Become an Instant expert in the Next 5 Minutes All For FREE!

    1. Start your own web radio show at BlogTalkRadio
    2. Become an Expert Author on Ezine
    3. Become an Expert at AllExperts.com

All 3 can be set up in just a few minutes and you can start using them on your site, blog, business cards, fliers, or what ever you are using. All Experts does take a few days to get approved last time I checked though.

I wrote a post about this and also included 3 images I created to use after you sign up with the above accounts.
