No geo in KW places question

I was told by someone in order to rank in places for a non geo KW I would need to link build for the KW.

On places without geo I am at spot "G".I started a campaign targeting the KW. I went from 54 to 15 on organic results for the KW. I actually disappeared from the 7 pack for a few days but am now back at "G".

Anyone have any input on how to rank for KW without geo? Whats frustrating is I have businesses in front of me that haven't even claimed their listings. I don't have any reviews yet but am working on that. I was thinking building citations and getting reviews might make the difference.

Here is another post from awhile back on the SEO forum that went unanswered. http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...-keywords.html

I have adwords up right now for my KW with no geo and a very tight custom shape to display the ads in and got 60 impressions in 7 days.

I canceled my yellow pages ad this year and am looking at other ways to market my brick and mortar business.

Thanks

OK, first I would ask a questions: Have you included this keyword in your Place Page Categories, without the geo? If you haven't or you have but it is WITH geo, then immediately add it/delete the geo location.

People, living in your town area, searching via iPhone would get the local results even without typing the geo keyword. Example:

I am a regular man from Richmond, VA, who is searching for a nice lunch spot during my work lunch break. I am using my phone and I am searching for "lunch restaurant". The results I would get are in the biggest proximity to my current location + some other factors (part of which are number of citations, backlinks and reviews). The most thing is that I do not have to type down the geo keyword.

If you want your Place Page to rank higher, try to build up reviews. There are some great techniques to do that, but I guess this is a topic of other thread
Furthermore, try to build citations of your business, especially on local directories, or directories oriented to your type of business. And definitely get listed in directories, such as Yelp and City Search. If you have a website - its optimization also influences a lot your Place Page ranking.

Yes, KW with no geo is now in the Category section. I recently made some changes to the listing and that was one of them. Its only been a few weeks since I did that.

Interesting what you said about the website. I didn't think onpage SEO affected places. I like to think my onpage is good. Looking at my h1 tag it just has the company name in it and no KW's. I'll look into that.

I've got a wordpress based site with a social media plugin. I've got yellowbot, facebook, twitter, linked in, youtube, Digg, Yelp and Merchant circle. I just recently put do follow attributes on them. I'll keep working on it. Something will happen eventually.

Yes, on-site SEO plays very significant role since last October. However, it should be locally optimized, i.e. you have to make organic SEO + local SEO. You need to have your address and phone mentioned on as many pages in your website as possible. You need the city of service mentioned often as well. You need your city of service mentioned in the title, etc.

But as far as I am concerned you need to build a review gathering strategy and you need to build more citations. These that you mentioned could be enough if you want to rank for some not-so-competitive keyword in not-so-big town, but generally you would need more.
