Give me your best SMS provider and information

So I have done a lot with Mobile Websites but now I am finding clients asking about SMS.

I am sure others are starting to see the same so where do you get the best SMS provider or can we develop our own. Where would we get the best wholesale sms.

So many people talking about so much a month but I thought SMS were per unit so if you charge $50 a month how many sms is that.

Can you tell me everything you know about SMS as I am sure it is not write a text message like one of the recent product releases said.

Setting up clients - do you use separate accounts or is there a provider that will let you have different accounts for different customers manageable in one interface.

Is desktop software or web based better?

Lots of questions but not many answers and the answers we are getting are a little strange so we need answers in Laymen's terms.

Articles, videos or just text answers are all appreciated.

    Quentin,

I just posted this pdf in another thread yesterday - it's a comparison I did last summer when researching some US based SMS providers, so you'll want to double check the companies mentioned and also make sure they service the countries you plan to operate in.

I found a number of providers here in the U.S. with a handful of Google searches and these companies were the top five or so picks I found. Much like choosing a mobile phone plan, you need to be aware of per message costs and/or monthly fees, and consider how often you plan to message your list.

If you plan on developing a huge list that you message every day - for example one "local deal" list that you send an offer from a new business each day - someone that offers unlimited messages for x number of contacts would probably be best. If you're doing a list for one business who might only send one offer a week to a list of a few hundred or thousand, then it's probably better to pay per message sent.

    Cheers,

    Steve

P.S. All the services I've come across have all been web based and most offer a reseller or affiliate option and give you the option to setup either separate sub-accounts or maintain separate shortcodes or keywords that you can use for different clients.

Personally I like hosting my own solution. It gives us the greatest control. I am looking to partner up with some warriors. Basically we will handle the backend and technology you sell, sell, sell. I put together a quick demo if you text jv to (727) 456-8880 or scan my profile pic. It will walk you through the demo. There is a quick video. Once done if you want off the list just text back stop and you will be removed. It is only a demo we are not trying to build a list so will not be used for anything else.

There is another thread in this forum you might find useful, I commented quite a bit in there. $50 doesn't get you much at all, maybe 2 keywords and a thousand texts. You really get into high profit margins when you have someone willing to create a customized plan... You don't want to pay more than a penny a text. Most services will provide you with an account layout where you can manage each separate client you have signed up.

Does anyone have any feedback on AdKing/Brandel which is using the DotGo system? AdKing's been advertising SMS systems for the past few years.

FYI, DotGo does NOT give you access to your list ... meaning that you cannot either view or download the phone numbers ... if you ever want to change SMS providers you lose your list(s) ... IMHO, that's not good

That's why you build your own platform and use a seperate providing for the optin lists so you do control the lists. All you want to use the Dotgo system for is the free incoming texting. Send it to your system and you can do many neat things with the engine system.

Hey Martin, would you be willing to explain that a little more? I will actually be speaking with Michael Keough with DKtext (Dotgo) tomorrow. That is one of the things I need more info on. And are you a hypnotist? just curious. I love that stuff

Also I think I may be selling the DKText sourcecode. I found that working with DOTGO was really a failed model though. Please let me know if you have any interest in umobie, if not sorry to bother you.

I would also appreciate if you give a little more information about building your own platform. I signed up for the dotgo system, before really understanding the limitations with regard to controlling lists.

I would also love to hear ideas on how to build our own platform also. I have been researching mobile marketing solutions for weeks and think Dotgo is the best I've found so far -- if I can find a way to collect the phone numbers for myself.

Hope thehypnoguy or someone else might enlighten us all...

Mflorin: What makes 'Dotgo' the best? Just curious, am new to all this! I was wondering if you can easily rebrand a control panel for a client's use? Such as have them log in and use the texting features? (like a restaurant owner for example)

Well, I still haven't heard back from Qwasi (the gentleman I talked to had just gotten a new computer and was working on getting it set up, but said he would send me something today).

I had sent an email earlier to Avid Mobile and just got off the phone with a gentleman and here's the info I got for their reseller program:
                    Set up fee - $199
                    $99/mo.
text cost is charged in arrears at $.035/msg
Texting can be bought in blocks at a discount
                    $6/client
                    They use SMPP for delivery
You can make mobile websites and apps
Lots of training, powerpoint presentations you can show to clients

The company sounds great. The training sounds phenomenal. I'm going to be shown a demo this afternoon. I really don't know how any company can beat this.

I'll let you know how the demo works out.

                      Hey guys/gals,

Currently there's a ton of providers out there but they all have certain
downfalls. For example, you should not be paying a monthly fee for
                      a mobile service.

Chances are you probably will only use it a couple of times per month.
why pay $49/month when you may use it sparingly. No one likes
to be charged for something they don't use.

We just launched Call Loop and here's what we give you:

                      • Autoresponders for voice and sms text
                      • Personalized text messages
                      • Full email autoresponder integration (iContact, Aweber, GetResponse,
MailChimp, Constant contact, and many more in the works)
                      • Pay as you go. Just pay for what you use at 5¢ per send.

                      Full Integration
Aweber, iContact, GetResponse, Constant Contact, MailChimp to
automatically grow their mobile subscriber list as new subscribers
join their list. No more manual importing, we sync it for them behind the
                      scenes.

Send Automated Followups (autoresponders for voice & text)
Just like an autoresponder users can setup a series of automated voice
and text message followups to work side by side with their followup
                      process.

Create Integrated & Automated Multi-Channel Marketing Campaigns
Now marketers can add two new automated marketing channels,
voice and text, to their followup campaign. Set it up once, and we'll
deliver their messages as new subscribers join their list.

Already some of the "top" marketers are using it.

We're using Twilio. Overall they may not be the cheapest, but I can offer each of my clients a dedicated local SMS number rather than a shared short code and I pay only $1.00 per month for that with Twilio.

So far, no one has complained about not having a short code. In fact, having a dedicated number eliminates the problems of limited numbers of keywords. Since I can offer each new client their own local dedicated SMS number, I can allow them to use any keywords they want, for any functions we can program for them. If my clients want a toll-free number, I can get those through Twilio for just $2.00 a month.

Inbound SMS messages are 1 cent each with Twilio, and 2 cents for outbound. Maybe not the cheapest for huge volume of texts, but that price is for any volume, even just one or two messages. Most of my clients don't do huge volumes anyhow, so with my markup, it's still cheap for them.

My programmers found their API very easy to use. We've written full-featured SMS-based interactive apps in just a few hours.

Plus Twilio offers a bunch of other features related to voice calls, and they give out free $30.00 credit.

No, I have no affiliation with Twilio, other than being a very happy customer.

Here's the inside scoop. Very FEW text message providers that you will look into will be the ACTUAL SOURCE. In most cases, they are simply a reseller, in which case, you don't want to deal with them.

For example, when I look at Avid Mobile, or should I say the screen shot they have on their website under Agencies/Resellers I can tell that it belongs to a company called Qwasi. They have "white label" software. However, you'll have to call them and ask for a "demo" to see it. If you get that far, then you'll see what I mean. i.e. Qwasi is the source. No one ever talks about the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policies. I recommend you read every word in both of those documents for every provider you are considering.

I thought I had finally found the best provider but when I got ready to move forward with them, I read those docs for them and it was really a big let-down for me. I wouldn't touch their service with a 10 foot pole after reading their Terms and Privacy. It was a bummer for me.

Do your due diligence and don't get started using a provider that could present BIG problems for you in the future.

AND don't just sign the agreement without reading it carefully, too.

            Here are some examples:

During the Term of this Agreement, Partner shall not procure and shall not be provided, directly or indirectly, with products and/or services which are similar to the products and services provided by [the provider] in accordance with this Agreement.

[The Provider] may terminate these Terms of Use or any activity or other use of the services provided by [the provider] under these Terms of Use and through [the provider] website, at will, upon 1 week's written notice. You may terminate the use of the services provided by [the provider] under these Terms of Use at any time upon 1 month's written notice.

By scrapping, updating, creating, uploading, or otherwise submitting any information, data, text, photographs, graphics, messages or other materials ("Your Content"), you grant [the provider] a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sub-licensable right and license to use, sell, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display Your Content (in whole or in part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed

The term "powered by [the provider]" will appear prominently on all pages of the sites created and\or operated in accordance with this Agreement. This was even though this was being presented as a white label service.

that [the provider] may disclose the fact that Partner is a customer of [the provider] to its existing and potential customers and in general marketing materials related to the SaaS.

            Is that enough?

This is repulsive, especially the "powered by" crap. That is a no-no in any situation where you are paying for the service. No more free advertising once people are paying a fair price.

By the way, any reason you can't mention who this is ?

Many providers have such or similar requirements. I also suggest reading TOS completly before signing anything.

Anyway, my experience was great with CS Networks SMS Gateway.

Pricing is fair, quality is good, and support is outstanding. They were helping me configure SMS encoding, and besides of guiding me through everything, support engineer logged in to my server configured everything for me in about 5 minutes.

I've been grinding through this for a few days...

There's this Reseller SMS | White Label SMS | Wholesale SMS Reseller Pricing that looks like they're based in for Australia

I think Tropo might work well also since you're international and Twilio doesn't currently support international International FAQ | Twilio Cloud Communications but it's not turnkey. I'm really on the fence right now between Trilio and Tropo. I think I'm going with Twilio for now since they have OpenVBX and subaccounts which gives you a good start (have not tried/installed it yet) but I think Tropo is much more robust. If you deal with businesses that use SIP you can integrate that with Tropo but not Twilio (yet)

    ref:
Twilio Releases OpenVBX, An Open Source Google Voice For Businesses
Get Satisfaction - People Powered Customer Service
Get Satisfaction - People Powered Customer Service

On a side note, there's also Active Collab which can integrate with OpenVBX (Twilio) which looks awesome especially if you outsource a lot.

There's also Teleku that Tropo just acquired https://www.tropo.com/telekufaq/home.jsp and they worked on a interface called OpenVoice with Tropo. OpenVoice

Here's a cool example of using Twitter and automatically responding to a user - wicked powerful stuff...
    YouTube - voxeovideos's Channel

It's obviously boatloads more work since you have to build it but I think it's a great long-term solution since you can modify it to create something unique if you have to. These are still pretty young solutions (2008/2009) but I've talked to a couple of business owners that are hot about it since they're relatively young and "get" the value of mobile.

Just posted this in another thread but thought I'd repeat it here as well. So far I like EZTexting.com - easy to understand with their video tutorials, "pay & go" option sounds good for any customers who may not yet have a very big data base of phone #'s, has affiliate program and possibly a reseller program. No contracts, can cancel or change plans at anytime, can import and export contacts, uses smtt - all in all, seems like a good fit for me, at least for now.

    Hi Quentin,
if you're looking for an API for Bulk SMS messaging
among other options I can recommend
    Clickatell Bulk SMS Gateway

They have been around for years and offer many benefits besides
    outbound SMS like two-way etc.
I don't know exactly how the pricing per sent message compares to
other providers but I estimate they are pretty competitive given their size.
You can check out the rates at their site.

    Regards,
    Gecki

The plethora of providers has been somewhat overwhelming. I did find TXT180 to have what I personally (with limited knowledge of course) wanted. SMPP, shortcode, EASY Cpanel, tutorials and low costs. worth checking out maybe. Also no contract or commitment so if I don't like it I just move on. Oh, one other thing I really liked was that you can get 500 credits for $9.95 (includes 1 keyword) which like most providers I checked do NOT rollover, however they offer different additional bulk packages that DO roll over just so you can cover yourself....

Actually they will be offering up a reseller program sometime next week. I'll have to go back into my emails but somewhere I signed up for the early notification here on the forum. For now however, I'm using the $9.95 plan w/500 texts and keyword (included) to use with my customers.

Looks like a nice system - only thing is it does not work with Cricket (too big a company to ignore) - not sure why, but message comes back "Cricket is not participating in this system at this time" mmm.

I have a PDF titled How to Choose Your SMS Provider that I would be happy to share with anyone if you PM or email me. It has about 15 questions you should have answered before you choose an SMS provider or white label solution. Many times, providers use advertised rates that look great but the fine print reveals additional fees (incoming messages, shared Keywords, premium Keywords, express delivery, API access, etc). Making a fully informed decision is the best thing!

TextCo Media built their own software ... and it's built upon the "DotGo" platform. Kind of like what AdKing did. In fact, at one point, TextCo was a distributor for AdKing.

P.S. I have compiled extensive information on 24 SMS companies offering White Label software. The "obvious" companies like Trumpia, EZTexting, etc., have been mentioned -- however, the great majority of these companies fly under the radar. What you see pop up in a google search for "text messaging companies" only yields the obvious, as well as a lot of resellers.

The problem as I see it with text plans that have a max number of messages per month included in the original fee is that the purpose of selling the plan is to have your customer use it as much as possible. Similar to cellphone plans, if you have an unlimited plan, you'll use the phone. If you get worried about minutes you tend to be hesitant. If customers are like that, they won't use the plan; therefore, won't find it as appealing.

Another pitfall is that if you send one message to 100 subscribers, that equates to 100 messages you pay for or that are subtracted from your monthly allotment; not just one. So, if a customer gets a 300 message account and has 100 subscribers, they can only send messages 3 times per month. Also, as they bring on more subscribers, they can send less messages per month without going over their plan's max which is detrimental to the whole marketing plan.

I've found that customers who use the system a lot tend to stay around. Those who don't, don't. Limiting their ability to message is not a good thing.

Think of email autoresponders. They do not limit the monthly messages. They charge based on the number of subscribers within the system. Why would text messaging be any different?

And, I've found that when you can tell your customer they can send messages any time they want, the perception is that it's worth more per month so we get to charge more per account.

We've built a white label system that I call "generic labeled" and there are a few of us (companies) using the same system for our customers. This way we can pool together and reach higher numbers and obtain discounts that are typically reserved for the "big guys". This allows us NOT to have to spend per message, per customer or per anything else and we can charge what we want to our customers (And, each customer has their own login area and stats).

Some of you may want to consider doing the same thing. Together everyone is stronger (just like this forum). Sharing support is always good too because there's no such thing as a Newbie because we all help one another.

It's not rocket science... it's just good business.

Oh, yeah... one more thing. A SMS system IS a pure text message system. A SMTP system isn't really one.

Hey mouseffects I definitely agree with the pricing thing. I charge my customers a flat fee up to 100 subscribers, then an additional charge per customer. What the additional charge covers is 8 texts (an opt-in, a reply, an opt-out, a confirmation opt out message, and average 4 monthly messages, one a week). That's my total estimated cost of a subscriber. I usually end up charging anywhere from 40-50 cents a month extra per subscriber depending on the type of business I'm helping out. So far it seems to be working out very well for me.

The install is quite easy really and I built a call flow but can't get it to do anything.

I plan on using Twilio but need a front end and management system. I was hoping to use OpenVBX and still might.

Thanks for stopping by Michelle! I've got quite a few questions for you but I'll start with just a few.
      1. Can the new DOTGO Publisher take the place of the interfaces that resellers like Brandel and DKText developed? Not that I don't like or appreciate either reseller's system but I want complete transparency between my digital agency and the vendors I use. I was somewhat turned off of Brandel's offering because they make no effort to disclose they are using DOTGO.

      2. For pure SMS messaging - is the Brandel offer of unlimited, un-metered messaging no longer possible or feasible when using DOTGO as the backend provider?

      Thanks,
      Tony

Not yet. We have a new Reseller API that lets you manage accounts, enable and disable services, and soon will even be able to let you launch DOTGO Publisher from your website. But DOTGO Publisher doesn't have any interface for a reseller to manage their accounts, so the code/website for creating accounts and billing users has to be developed by you.

The way we see it though is that even as DOTGO Publisher evolves to provide a reseller interface, there will still be a place for other tools. We think we know how to build a great general-purpose tool, but don't claim to know how to built the best tool for your customers. For example, we have a reseller who has integrated DOTGO into their enterprise CMS for radio stations, and as such their interface is completely different from the one we offer since it is tailored specifically for radio station DJs.

"Interactive" messaging (i.e. a user texts to your domain name and gets back an immediate message) is free up to around 1MPS. For broadcasting from your domain we currently offer three messaging plans our website under "Publishers" > "Pricing", and have higher volume plans as well. We do have an unlimited messaging plan, but that really only makes sense if you're pushing millions of messages per month from your domain.

Michelle, as a Dotgo reseller, would we and the client have access to the phone numbers of subscribers? I keep reading that only Dotgo would have access. Hoping that has changed.

As a suggestion, if a reseller needs to have a coder build a back office control panel so that end-user clients can self-manage, perhaps it would behoove Dotgo to be able to refer a source of someone who can build that platform. Would benefit everyone.

      What are the reseller costs?

Lastly, what would you say are the real benefits of using Dotgo over the competition?

      Thanks Michelle.

        Hi Izesta,

DOTGO doesn't pass the phone number in order to prevent spam. If DOTGO did, then a user could opt out from a domain name, but the domain name could continue to send the user messages via another channel. However, DOTGO does allow you to fully track users using "Session Variables," which work like server-side cookies, and we have an concept of "registration" and "following" together with an API so that you can opt-in users and send them messages whenever you need to.

Yes, absolutely. We do have some developers that we can refer you to, but we're also working on forums and a community hub where developers and resellers will be able to communicate with each other. We're also going to be announcing soon the ability to launch our graphical Publisher from your website so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel if you don't want to.

Originally Posted by Izesta View Post

Our Reseller plan costs $199 a month, which gives you access to our Reseller API and lets you buy messaging plans at 50% retail.

        Our current retail plans are:

$9.99/month: Unlimited interactive messaging, up to 1,000 broadcast messages/month
$49.99/month: Unlimited interactive messaging, up to 10,000 broadcast messages/month
$249.99/month: Unlimited interactive messaging, up to 100,000 broadcast messages/month

Interactive messaging means that a users texts you and gets back an immediate response (no opt-in). Broadcast means sending messages to a user who has opted in to your service. So as a reseller you'd be buying these plans at 50% off (e.g. $5 for up to 1000 messages/month), and then reselling them to your clients as you see fit.

Originally Posted by Izesta View Post

DOTGO is a better way of implementing text messaging services mainly in three ways:

        1. Most importantly, DOTGO maps the first word of any text message sent to the phone number DOTCOM (368266) to the corresponding .com Internet domain name. For example, you can access a site like google.com by texting the word “google” to the phone number DOTCOM (368266). This means all 100 million Internet domain names now have an unambiguous way for their users to text them (as opposed to the random "text 'pizza' to 12345"). Users of .edu, .gov, .net, and .org domains can similarly use the phone numbers DOTEDU (368338), DOTGOV (368468), DOTNET (368638), and DOTORG (368674). This is a very different way to think about text messaging. This means that as a reseller you can go to a business and essentially offer them the ability to "turn on" text messaging for their existing domain name (though some resellers offer their clients sub-keywords on their own domain).

        2. DOTGO uses the first and only markup language for text messaging, called CMRL. This makes building engaging and interactive and text messaging text messaging services much easier than what was previously possible. It also makes it easy to integrate with other software. To get a feel for how CMRL works, have a quick look at our document "A Brief Introduction to DOTGO" on dotgo.com under "Support" > "Documentation". And to see some examples, try texting e.g. "wheaties" to DOTCOM (368266) to see a promotion wheaties.com ran, or "foursquare" to DOTCOM (368266) to see an SMS interface to foursquare.com. (And our new DOTGO Publisher makes it easy to create sites graphically without having to learn CMRL).

        3. Finally, DOTGO is (by a large factor) much more affordable than any other SMS service.

If you'd like to try out the new DOTGO Publisher or our Reseller API (coming out of private beta in about a week), I can send you (and anyone else on this thread who's interested) a coupon for a free month trial for either of these. Just email me at "m dot deforest at dotgo dot com" for details!

        Hope this helps!

DOTGO is a better way of implementing text messaging services mainly in three ways:

          1. Most importantly, DOTGO maps the first word of any text message sent to the phone number DOTCOM (368266) to the corresponding .com Internet domain name. For example, you can access a site like google.com by texting the word "google" to the phone number DOTCOM (368266).

Thanks Michelle for that very thorough response.

I like what I have seen with Dotgo. I need/want something "out-of-the-box" so I can focus my time on marketing and getting clients. Not interested in coding and creating and developing as I am not a techie at all. Looking for a reliable white label solution where I can get moving.

You said, "..going to be announcing soon the ability to launch our graphical Publisher from your website so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel if you don't want to." I presume this refers to the graphical publisher interface you now have on the Dotgo site?" How soon do you envision? A nice feature would be the ability to have a demo or trial on my website.

Does the Dotgo TOS agreement clearly state that Dotgo will not use, sell, share the cell phone numbers of my subscribers with any third party - (you know the usual legalese)?

Can the Dotgo system allow a user to schedule SMS messages to be sent at a later date? What about doing polls, contests, etc.?

Thanks again Michelle. I hope you will continue to post Dotgo updates here.

While I guess I understand the logic, that seems overly controlling. As someone with extensive email marketing experience I have yet to ever see on reputable email marketing provider not provide the email list as a download option.

Same logic applies that I could use another system to spam the user, but then the onus would be on me as the offender.

In all reality, it seems like a policy created out of fear. Fear that customers will leave your system so you put every barrier in place to prevent that from happening, including the passing of opted-in phone numbers. That protectionist mentality likely turns off many people. I know that I would never work with a provider that would not allow me access to my data.

I'm sure that your system is very nice, but that is a major no go as far as I'm concerned. And I would suggest the same requirement to any marketer evaluating a service.

Just my two cents into the process.

            Good point zbw777.

Opt out is always a voluntary compliance system. Even with email, if someone opts out, theoretically I could send them email from another account/isp and could continue to do that forever because I have their email address in my database.

Not having access to the subscribers is more unfair to the client than me.

It does appear Dotgo is taking a precaution that other major providers are not.

The problem with using Twilio and OpenVBX, is that there is currently no way to schedule a campaign. You must either be at your computer to send the blasts personally every time, or get some sort of iPhone/Android app that you can schedule texts to be sent to your Twilio account that will trigger campaign messages (non of this seems practical or reliable). OpenVBX can do very little on its own as far a text messaging, however there are some plug-ins that can give you the ability to make an auto responder and opt-in op-out lists based on keywords. Unless you are comfortable programming, or can afford to hire somebody, OpenVBX is not accessible enough for the average Offline Marketer IMO.

I'm just using Trumpia for now. The prices are a little higher per text, but I don't think they charge for incoming opt-int or opt-out texts which helps. Also no setup fee, and managing keywords and campaigns is pretty straightforward. They also offer white box options, but I have not looked into it much yet.

I installed OpenVBX without problems. It is no different than a manual install of Wordpress (not fantastico install).

It works great and I believe it will be my platform.

$50 I will do an install provided your hosting account/server is appropriate for Twilio.

Check through all the apps that others have made on Twilio like restaurant seating notifications, the www.fakegirlfriend.co website. Amazing stuff. Actually fakegirlfriend wasn't as amazing as others but it was the one I remembered....

There was a caller ID spoof site that made big money and OpenVBX can do things like that...the skys the limit. Just be creative.

Having said that I wish when people give reviews on really easy 3rd party services they would state whether the customer even gets access to the potential customers phone numbers. Or if the text provider has access.

You may be setting yourself up for a disaster. Why would use a platform which is just harvesting your customers phone numbers for themselves?

This is a very high priority for me to have control over the system.

That is funny! Where do you find all the apps created?

        Thomas

PS. Do they have an app for client management and scheduler?

They let everyone post their apps up so some are not so great. But look through and you can see great ones.

I had often wondered if there was some kind drag and drop interface for say; Iphone apps or Android or even PC apps what I could come up with and this is that type system I imagined because I'm no coder.

I can see making a complete custom business phone answering system before lunch with this.

I guess its the wow factor for your customer when you tell tell them you can create their own custom application for phone/sms promotion.

There are other features in there that I would bet many don't offer. Example: The customer doesn't even need to text: They can simply call the number. It has many voice options since it is originally a voice based system.

Older folks don't text but they understand making a call and maybe getting a text back and reading it or they get a prerecorded message.

We have an older demographic here in the tourist town/real estate town I live in so I wouldn't mind covering all bases.

Client managment: I havn't got that far into it just a couple hours one night.

Client management I think would be done by having a seperate install for each client. Once I did one I could do another install in 30 minutes and then customization...hmmm...same as changing a logo in wordpress maybe.

Scheduler: Good question as someone said above there was no option for sceduling and that you needed to send a text? I don't know but I can't imagine there is not some option for this.

I'm definitely going to check that out because it is important.

With our system it's possible to compose and send a message immediately, or schedule it at any date/time in the future.

And yes, it's possible to author polls and contests with CMRL; people have built them before.

Michelle, my partner & I are still planning.

The only major downfall I see with Dotgo is the inability to capture cell phone numbers of subscribers. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Without the subscriber data, if Dotgo tanks, me & all my clients tank. Or am I missing something?

I personally DO NOT want the phone number. I DO NOT want my clients having the phone number. This helps take all liability off of me and put it on Dotgo. And, I doubt Dotgo would allow you to get the numbers because that increases their liability.

I suppose there is some truth to this, but it does not answer the question, "What if I become unhappy with a supplier and want to move to a new SMS supplier? I lose ALL my customers."

Not all awesome companies continue to be awesome. DOTGO could be the best in the world today, but competition can change that. DOTGO could be sold to a new owner who just tries to financially gouge the clients that DOTGO carefully nurtured. And so on and so on.

I do not want to feel trapped.

Your thinking this through great! I actually experienced this exact situation when I went to DOTGO. I was using TextMarks. What we did was send out text messages through Textmarks letting people know to switch to the new code to continue receiving messages. This actually ended up being a benefit for us and the businesses...

There are various reasons as to why it happens, but this helps get your list updated...more accurate...more streamlined for those really wanting to continue getting the messages.

I don't think having the list is the best way to go for some reasons. Not having the list is not the best way to go for some reasons. We found it better not to have the list and we found benefit when it did come time to switch even though there is trade-off.

It was over a year ago and I did not record it nor do I remember. Must have been better than 10% though because I know it was a positive thing overall, even though we did end up with fewer subscribers for each business.

I would expect email to be a worse switchover rate though. A lot of it depends on the value of the content they are getting too. We put a lot into educating the businesses on providing "value" (not necessarily always some great offer). If people are getting value, they'll stay with it so long as the hurdles are not too cumbersome and often.

They did a full Wordpress integration. Very nice work...a complete Open Source solution.

I wouldn't buy from sendshorty because I know how much cheaper I can buy texts. They mark it up 300-600% but nice wordpress solution.

am really liking twilio - for developers there is a lot flexibility - you could easily tie it into a wordpress or joomla and drupal

Someone mentioned a scheduler you can code that using php infact you can tie their system into any php source you put together, its much easier to use then some of the other sms gateways i have used before!

the more i read about twilio the more ideas i keep coming up with - what a great resource!

I haven't seen anyone mention Call Fire - they have no minimums, no setup fees and no startup cost with a flat 3 cents per message no matter how few you send. I think I'm going to give them a try.

We also have a turn-key SMS white label solution that isn't built on top of another platform or gateway. Includes most of the features I see being requested often in Warrior at much lower prices. We have been selling Long Codes for 2 years, one of first in US to do so. Our platform works with both Short and Long Codes too. PM me for more information.

I've been using callfire for six years. They support all platforms and carriers nationwide. This is particularly important when you have clients with multiple locations such as fast food chains, franchises, etc and a mobile sales force. They do also have a white label option.

Yes that's a risk of any white label is that dynamics may change over time so you must be diligent in choosing your white label provider. Trumpia tells all of our clients as a reseller you're looking at a minimum of 3-4 year commitment not contractual but simply because you don't want to change your platform, shortcode, etc unless you're absolutely forced to do so.

While I think you were lucky Dan, I wouldn't make it a practice or strategy to just say, "Well, we can get them to re opt-in."

I would look for a provider that will allow you to export your information, along with time and date of opt-in for your records. That has been a major requirement of mine while searching.

That's fine for you. If you want that requirement, great.

For me, I do not want the ability to get the information, and although it has drawbacks, they are not greater than the drawbacks of having the information for me. So, I have found benefit in not having the information and working with that...lucky or not.

You seem to place a lot of emphasis and importance on NOT having access to the subscribers.

What are all the benefits of NOT having the list that so outweigh the benefits of having it? I get the feeling I must be missing something big.

You probably are not missing something big.

I mentioned the liability aspect previously. That sums it up for me. I do not want to be responsible for having and protecting that information.

Let me guys tell you something about liability aspect of providing... any service.

I totally respect everyone's choice of action, but just to let you know, your liability might not end only because you choose NOT to have access to people's phone numbers...

A customer doesn't care where you decide to store their phone numbers or who you designate to protect them for you. If anything goes wrong (security breach/stolen data etc), you will more likely get sued right along with that "storage" company... you will be paying your attorneys and probably some more to your clients...

The funny (not really funny) part is, that you might be THE company hit by a lawsuit, not the service provider!

And to recover your losses, you might have to sue the provider yourself. Unfortunately, that's how it very often goes.

However, if your only worry is to have the data secured by a company like DOTGO, because they have better resources than you, then it's a good move. Just don't think that you're no longer liable for your customers' data, because you might be very surprised... just saying

Every time, any of us wants to re-sell some services under our name (white label, private label), we are opening ourselves to possible lawsuits, but that's a part of the game...

If you want to limit (or lower) your liability exposure, become an affiliate instead. Let your clients sign up directly with the service provider. Not perfect, but a little safer.

DO I EVER AGREE WITH THIS, never ever start working with a small company who offers cheap rates for txt messaging, yes its attractive but if they only have been doing this for a very short time and don't have a track record of success you can get burned. Per text cost means nothing. I would rather pay 4-5cents a message knowing that the company is trained and are proffessionals at handling their shortcodes, databases, outgoing, incoming messages and more.

Very risky to go with someone who just buys a shortcode slaps on a whitelabel and says... here you go launch your own company.

So many rules and regulations and stuff to look for. Should I buy a shortcode.. sure in the long run it might be cheaper, but I am no expert in shortcodes.. leave that to the company who has huge cashflow and a good standing business and who is well known in the industry.

              My 2 cents...

OP, I suggest you look into iZigg mobile marketing. Their cheapest plan starting at $99/month (2k txt msg a month). If you are selling this plan to your client you will get 25% in commission. No contract, but best of all the short code for this company is 90210 which probably is the most recognizable short code of all sms company. Text "upyoursells" to 90210 and see what happen =)

                Best of luck bud.

I wholeheartedly agree (except the part about paying 4-5 cents), and the same applies to providers just recently jumping onto the Long Code bandwagon. I wouldn't want to bet my business on someone who hasn't been in the market and has a successful track record. And definitely a provider that has a complete audit trail and follows the Mobile Marketing Association's Best Practices.

Choosing a fly-by-night, set up yesterday provider is not for me. Far too much at risk. Not just my business but many others.

For one, check out Offlineman's offering. He posted 3 posts above yours. He lives in Canada as well. His white label is supposed to roll out in Canada any day now.

Another that contacted me was EatDrinkTextJay. (he also has a post not far above yours) He does not live in Canada but looks like he has an offering that covers us.

Also, user zbw777, who has a forum dedicated to mobile. (see his sig block in his post above)

There are others that say their offering will be available to Canadian companies soon.

looks as if with all the providers listed here I guess just pick one and go for it or does the old saying hold true "you get what you pay for" ?

It seems everyone has their favorite source and just a few stand out. At this point maybe I am just a little overwhelmed and my question would be which company would fit in for a newbie to the business and which one would be the least expensive to get started with?

I'm not trying to be flip with this answer but really it's probably going to come down to whichever one you feel you can understand and feel comfortable in explaining to your prospects.
There are so many choices and all probably have some pluses and minuses - I'm still going over a few myself but in the end I think I prefer to just be an affiliate for the time being, maybe charge a set-up fee and let them handle it or give them the option to pay me to handle it for them.
Sorry, probably not the answer you're looking for but it does appear to be one of those things we all have to sort through for ourselves - with the help of this forum of course!

The hardest thing in this business is to find a good provider... and getting your own shortcode will cost anywhere from 2500-4000 startup plus 2500$ a month. I have tried many and it's a personal choice... In canada its way more expensive...

Finding the right supplier who is well funded and has been in the business for many years is the real key here. You don't want to have 100 of your clients on a shortcode and something happens to it! Risk is very, very big.. That's why I recommend going with a national well funded company, who tracks all outgoing messages so the code doesn't get banned for spamming or swearing. You need to watch out and take finding the right supplier very seriously.

Sure, that's why, if you want to have a better security, you have to either invest in it or use a service provider's system.

There's a lot of variables to factor in when going white label and eventhough most White Label Reseller platforms like Trumpia, do not force you into a contractual length of time for which you must stay with the company, you should anticipate to use the platform for at least 3-4 years.

This is a very interesting thread.

However, What I have read so far is that most of you are willing to step over a $100 bill to pick up 4.7 cents.

Sure, this a business and should be treated like one.

You want to save money and make the most profit, right?

Well, once again, stop stepping over $100 bills to pick up 4.7 cents and
    begin to TAKE ACTION!

In the end the clients/customer pays...not you.

    Just price your clients accordingly.

    1) Mom & Pop Place...a certain price
    2) Establisments with more customers...a different price

You decide what the price is and what the market will bear.

Remember...YOU are the only and "best text messaging service" in town,
and if you do not believe that...then go to work for McDonalds.

Now, get out there and start your sms texting business!

I am using SMS Marketing Campaigns | Web Based | Mobile Advertising | Bulk SMS. They offer 100 free credits and a keyword as a trial.

Pay as you go at 3 cents, and if you go with one of their packages, you can save even more. So far they have been good to work with.

Great choice.. their prices cannot be beat and the features are great.. the fact you don't have to pay a license fee every month is huge...

Lime Cellular is a good company, but its a little misleading to say they don't have a licensing fee. They have a $300/month minimum, whether you buy anything or not. While they don't call it a Licensing Fee, it amounts to the same, at least until you buy $300/month worth of services. We do have a licensing fee ($97/month), but it is offest by some launch bonuses we're running right now. Just want to make sure people understand that Lime has upfront costs for most mobile marketers starting out with SMS, as most don't walk in the door with enough clients to justfy $300/month.

I guess it is your personal opinion. I think 300 per month, no upfront fees and true White Label is worth it because you can get 2 customers and already will pay off for the service and you make a profit....

    What about
kannel dot org -Open Source for WAP and SMS Gateway.Or
playsms dot org - playSMS is a flexible Web-based Mobile Portal System that it can be made to fit to various services such as an SMS gateway, bulk SMS tools

Does anyone have experience with these? Feedback woule be appreciated.

Also has anyone thought about having a front end to Google voice. I know there are TOS against commercial use sms but if you have a front end to manage clients you can set each one up with their own Google voice account - may be a work around the TOS

      VirtualName,

I looked at Adking's site and was curious about a couple of things. How come I have to use 2 keywords for customers to opt-in instead of just one like most "true" SMS providers.

I was also wondering why at the bottom of there website there is a disclaimer about the SMS might be pulled at anytime. If they do this what happens to the lists we have built up? Do they give us full access to move our lists if they yank the SMS out from under us?

Zenyatta, that's because adking is not using a system that they've created, they're using dotgo's system. They have to put that disclaimer in because if dotgo decided to stop their sms service, all of Adking's customers would be left in the dark without service and it would be nothing that Adking could do about it . Check out dotgo's website at dotgo (.) com. Adking just built an entry system around dotgo. DKTEXT has done exactly the same thing. It's easy to build on top of dotgo. I've built 15 different systems all centered around dotgo's sms service. I've built a Twitter like app, mobile coupons, store locator, jobs, reminders, real estate, movie times, dating, games, etc... Dotgo has all the documentation for building applications with CMRL (Concise Message Routing Language). Check out the per message prices at Dotgo--$9.99 for 1,000 messages, $49.99 for 10,000. Also, look at the Short Codes for Adking and compare them to Dotgo. Short Codes: 368266, 368338, 368468, 368638, 368674. Dotgo charges $199 per month for their white label reseller program. When you sign up, you get all messages at 50% of cost. So those message prices that I quoted above would be cut in half. $125 for 100,000 messages. Oh and the list, the list that you build on their system would exist no more. With dotgo's system, you the publisher or your business customer would never get to see the list of phone numbers that subscribe to your service. The numbers are kept within the system to prevent spamming,at least that's what Dotgo says.

I have found two providers that for me offer the best overall value/service.

Text180 offers a great white label program, has a nice back-end interface, and informative instructional videos for you and your clients. Their pricing is great at .02 or less per message. Only other fee is $295 per year for white label.

Other option I use is Twilio. Uses a phone number insead of short code number, but does not seem to be an issue. The great thing is that you have unlimited keyword availibility. $1 per month for local phone number and .02 per text.

IMO there's no better SMS service than CallLoop
they are like Aweber for mobile phones.

If you sync it up with their AutoTeleseminar service
it's like the perfect storm. CallLoop is the only way
    to go.

Integrates with Aweber, InfusionSoft, & Nanacast also so you
can automate the SMS follow up all the way through the funnel.

I've also heard great things about CallLoop. I am not doing a lot of SMS with my clients but I do like the features CallLoop offers. I've looked at a few others but I'm not sure if they do the auto feature.

How often are you guys setting it up for clients vs. managing it for them?

    Hey Quentin,

Great question and my wife owning a small business thriving we are always looking for economical ways to not only grow her business but help other small businesses as well. There is a thread in this same category of offline marketing that is covering the question you had asked with great information that I will be implementing right away. Something that you may see value in as well.
