I have posted as well have seen a few questions about hosting. Whether to use a reseller hosting account or not. I wanted to post this so those just starting out don't end up where I am right now.

I have a non reseller shared hosting account with Justhost. This hosting account:
  • Unlimited GB's of Space
  • Unlimited GB's of Transfer
  • Unlimited Domain Hosting
  • Unlimited E-Mail Accounts
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
So I nail a client, purchase the domain name with my information, charge them a fee to make the site with their information, and charge them a monthly rental fee (per say) for the site. I am not violating any TOS, because all the domains I am hosting are mine. Note: All the sites I make are Wordpress sites, and are added to my hosting account as addon domains.

All has been well with this until I learned about a small detail with my Justhost account. While they allow unlimited domains and SQL's they have a limit on the amount of inodes you can have. I learned today, that the limit at Justhost is 50,000 inodes. Note: I have a second shared hosting account with Webhostingpad and their inode limit is 10,000, and they also have unlimited domains and SQL's.

I currently have 23 domains at Justhost and a total of just over 61,000 inodes, and 3 domains at Webhostingpad with just over 6,000 inodes. Justhost told me to delete some files to get under 50,000. Now remember these are wordpress sites, so with blogs I will be adding content to my clients sites every month to target more keywords and areas.

I asked webhostingpad about exceeding the 10,000 inodes they set and they said they don't worry to much about it, they want to make sure your not using over 10% cpu usage.

I contacted Godaddy about their unlimited account and they said they do not have an inode limit, however you can have a max of 100 ftp accounts. Their unlimited account costs 120 a year, so in my opinion this is the best option if you want to go with a non reseller shared hosting account and host a lot of domains.

I then asked Justhost about their reseller account and they said there is no inode limit, because the accounts you set up for your clients are based on space. So you have to allot a certain amount of space for each client. Most reseller account have curtain levels of how much space you get and they are more expensive each month depending on how much space you need. So with a reseller account you have to watch how big you make your clients sites, so you are kinda limited there as well.

So in closing I can't add any more domains to my Justhost account, and on my Webhostingpad account, I can probably add maybe 10 more. When this is finished I will be going with Godaddy, so I can have 100 domains before I have to worry about another hosting account. Lets look at the numbers.

Reseller account at Justhost unlimted Space, Domains, and Bandwith=
$89.95 a month x 12 months=1079.40 a year.
Reseller account at Hostgator 200gb Space, unlimted domains, 1400gb bandwith= $99.95 a month x 12 months=1199.40

Godaddy unlimited for 120 a year x 10 accounts each able to have 100 domains= 1200 a year.

So while in the long run over the years you will end up spending more by having more godaddy accounts, it is cheaper in the beginning as your growing to have Godaddy unlimited shared hosting.

Please reply with your thought and comments, thanks for reading.

When it gets to a point where you can afford it, stop being cheap and using shared hosting.

Go with a VPS solution. Something like mediatemple or wiredtree.

A little bit longer to set up but WORTH IT in the long run.

      Virtual Private Server,
You actually own a node here, though managing it can be tricky specially if you haven't worked before

That's funny - 10+ years designing websites and with a reseller account and I've never heard the term inode until today!

Forgetting about inodes for now, just how much storage and bandwidth are you currently using? Is there a reason you feel you need unlimited everything?

If you're developing sites and selling or leasing them to others, making money in other words, no offence - but I have to ask why be so cheap when Justhost's basic reseller account is less than $20/month?

I've been paying $25 a month for my reseller account for years and for my personal projects and other accounts that I've hosted, it's been a smart investment that pays for itself.

Steve, lets say on a low end you get 4 new clients a month, for 12 month, that's 48 clients a year x 10 years, that's 480 clients. There is no way you would be within limits on your $25 a month account. If it is, I defiantly need the account you have.

Please tell me about your $25.00 a month account.

Well of course you couldn't host that many clients on a $25 account, but lets look at just 4 of those clients. I assume you're charging them either monthly or upfront for design and/or hosting - no? Let's say you design and host a site for $100 a month per client - you're now making $400 a month, and hosting them all on a reseller account that costs about $20! Even if you got their unlimited plan and spent close to $100 a month, that's still not a terrible deal.

I'm all for saving a buck or two when you can, but when you and your clients business depend on a decent web host, spending $20 or so is a reasonable investment in my book...unless you're developing the next facebook and need untold amounts of bandwidth and disc space.

      Cheers,

      Steve

In addition, these services must be available at the time flexible hours. So even if you have any trouble at midnight, they will still be able to help you. And you can see, the issues and requests should be free of charge. As such, your site does not load correctly when you open the different browsers, such errors must be resolved as soon as the hosting company at no additional cost.
