using keywords for local

9 replies
I am optimizing a client for several small locations. The amount of keywords I will have to target it I go by "plumber city", "city plumber", "plumbing city", "city plumbing"... is too much

I'm talking about 15 locations I need to target and the company is HVAC so we have air conditioning, heating, solar, electric and all its derivatives (ac repair, heat pumps...)

What I see from Google is that when putting your keyword as "plumber", a lot of times it gives you local search anyway according to your IP.

My question is if I can just target the keywords (plumber, plumbing...) and get good results or if I must include the city name in anchor texts of links (internal and inbound)

      From my experience no, including the city name is always best. Yes you get geo location when searching, but in terms of off site optimization having a keyword with a city name will help a lot.

        I agree. I've found Google to be anal down to the positioning of the actual word in the phrase. So "Plumber Arkansas" gets different results to "Arkansas Plumber".

        Latent Semantic Indexing my ass. Google's dumb, you need to spoon feed the little fella.

    Thanks guys.
    Maybe we're not there yet but I see it coming soon that you could omit it and you'll still be on top.

    They are closing the gap with showing local results on a generic, global search...

    Yes include the city name to it. This is a must! I would even go so far as to add the state as well in the body. That way you will show up in even more searches. Because some people do search with the state in the google bar.

    I would think you would keyword their products and services just as much.

    People search for install sink or fix storm water plus many more as well as plumber in their city.

      That is true. I dont even use short term kw for my clients anymore. Too competitive and triggers Google Places all over the page.

      I get in the mindset of the consumer that is searching for help or a service. Its like when my ipod stopped working. I didnt search "ipod repair". because that just gave me a bunch of sites trying to sell me stuff. I searched for the problem I was having "ipod 5th generation only playing audio one side". This gave me sites that had either videos or explanations on what was wrong and how to fix it. Only a handful of ipod repair shops had this answer and I ordered from one that did answer my question.

      So if you are working with a plumber it would be better to rank for search phrases like "toilet wont stop running" or something like that? I dont know toilet problems or plumbing problems, but your client does.

      I wrote a little but more about this here: http://offlinerockstaracademy.com/go...-search-guide/

      I also included a list of Google Suggestion Tools that are up to 50% off and range from $7 to $22 that are MUST have tools if you want to dominate Google Local Searches!
