I got a new client in my small town! Question on domain name choice.

Hello everyone,
I got a new client for a tree removal service! Our town's population is about 8,000. I did some keyword research using the town name and county name and it doesn't show any searches. How do I know what keyword to use as the domain name? I'm supposed to put a proposal together and present it to him soon. I can really use the money NOW! My plan is to offer a website and Google Places listing, and I may throw in a mobile site for a surprise.
I'm also wondering what WP theme to use. Any suggestions for me on these questions? Thanks for your advice.
Kathy

Get in the mind of the local consumers searching for his service. This is where ex IM get confused and need to Un-learn what they did in the IM world.

I would first ask them what do they offer and what services do their customers ask for. That is where you will get your keywords or search phrases to target from. No keyword tool will give you these results since they are so low. But you only need 1-2 searchers a month to make a call and your client will make $100's off it.

      Hi Proctologist of Life!
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll talk to him later today. Now to figure out what to charge....
      Kathy

PS. I bought the $7 tools you offer yesterday! I tried them out on the "tree service town name" and nothing came up. I can see where those tools will be very helpful in a different situation. I think I'm going to start targeting some bigger towns here in Oregon... :-)

Awesome and sometimes you wont get results if there are not enough searches. Try just searching "tree service" with the tools instead and it will give you ideas. Then just add the city name to the end. You have to remember that Google will not keep results or give you suggestions if they dont see enough searches for it. But remember that you only need a few searchers a month since they are ready to buy when searching for a local business.

      Hi Kathy,

For doing Google Local, it is a must to have name of business, street address and telephone number clearly noted on website. Also have the suburbs surrounding clients location.

That is how I got placed number one in the listing.

I did add the same details with link to a free, but high page rank, local business directory. Also added a review.

      No website listed.

As for the domain name, go with the business name.

Google wants to see consistency of business name, address and phone number.

If you are looking for a Wordpress theme that designed for that as well as mobile ready, just let me know and I'll send you in the right direction.

Being in a small town, you are probably not going to see Google search numbers.

If there are paid ads on search, then that gives you a more accurate gauge of the best
      keywords.

      Best,
      Ewen

        Thanks Ewen!
This guy works out of his home and he just recently changed his business name because he was affiliated with some other local guy that recently went to jail for some bad things he did. (don't ya just love small town stuff?) He came up with a pretty lame new business name, too. It doesn't even make sense. (I think he's fallen out of one too many trees!) Seriously.

I looked at the Google Places listings and out of the 7, only one
has a website and he's number 5, but number 1 in the organic listings. The others all have maps.google.com listed.

There are some paid ads on Google and they're all pretty much out of Portland which is about 100 miles from here.

If you feel like sending me info on a theme I'd be happy to check it out.

        Thanks again,

        Kathy

          Kathy,

I see you have already checked out Expand2Web Small Biz theme,
that's the one I was going to recommend anyway.

If you end up using others, then make sure you get all the things I mentioned in the right order though.

          Best,
          Ewen

    As far as WP themes:

    For Offline Consultants $47

WordPress Theme for Small Business Websites – The Expand2Web SmallBiz WordPress Theme | The Expand2Web Blog $117

    Themes | WooThemes $70

Woothemes I use: Inspire / Sealight / Overeasy

I havent used the first 2 but heard good things about both. I mainly use the Woothemes when setting a client for a full blog site. Takes a little learning to set up, but they have video tutorials.

The first 1 seems pretty easy and simple to set up and might be all you need to use for your client. Most clients will tell you that they want a 5 page site with blog etc. But they will never get around to adding more content or even logging into the blog. So I set them up the first page as a landing page with contact info and then add to it if they ever get around to giving me more.

      Thanks again!
I actually have the for Offline Consultants theme.
I just got it, and was playing around with it yesterday
for an auto repair business website I'm making for my
mechanic. We did a barter for some work he did on my
motor home. I had a few problems setting it up, but
I'm sure it's just me, not the theme. :-)

The Woothemes look awesome, too! And I love the Expand2Web Small Biz theme,
but my finances are pretty crappy right now. I plan on getting it later and maybe
the Woothemes, too! I know I can do this offline thing! I just need to talk to more
      people...and I WILL!

      Kathy :-)

Why would you "throw a mobile site for a suprise"?

mobile site is much more valuable than regular site for some type of industry

Well, I thought it would be nice to "over deliver". I have made several mobile sites and they're pretty easy to do and I know the tree guy. He's a personal friend. I'm not sure if a tree service needs a mobile site, but more and more people are using phones instead of computers these days, so you never know....

      Kathy

PS. This was your 100th post! I just had my 100th post earlier today!
I got your PM and answered you a minute ago.

    Hi Rockstar:
Just went to your link looking to get the Mark Hess tool for $7, but the price has more than doubled in what seems to be just a few hours...
Is this the same $7 tool Kathy's talking about?

    Thanks.

      Hey Kathy! Fellow Oregonian! Here's my suggestions;

      1) Domain Name for Tree Removal - I don't know what town you're in but lets' assume it's "Newport, OR". Use...www.NewportDiscountTreeRemoval.com and....instead of making a 2, 3 or more, page website....Just go with ONE Page....patterned after the following site... http://houstondiscountroofing.com/ Now...see how simple that is? When you propose a ONE-Page site like this....ask your prospect
      a) if he wants a fancy-schmancy website
      or
      b) HOT LEADS for his Tree Removal Biz

      and....

      2) You mentioned the words "Mobile Website" so....let me give you something to ponder (assuming again that your town is Newport, OR)
Set up a MOBILE Directory for Newport! Call it... "MobileNewport.com" (open now)
Arrange a ONE Page site with Business Categories arranged in alphabetical order....Antiques, Architects, Auto Repair....on down and...when you get to "Restaurants"....make those in Alphabetical order too (Chinese, Family, Fast Food, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Seafood, Steaks...etc)

Make a MOBILE page for each. Ryan Hotaling had a GREAT WSO around last April 23rd for "Creating Mobile Directories"

I'm putting together a "Restaurant Directory" for "Tourists" and letting Tourists, who check into local motels, know HOW to access my "Mobile Directory" ON THEIR CELL PHONES!

      "Tourists" have a LOT of things going for them as re: a NICHE Target Market for Restaurants;
      1) They DON'T (usually) bring Food with them
      2) They are HUNGRY
      3) They have MONEY
      4) They are WILLING TO SPEND IT!

And....YOU can be THE ONE...in your town to provide them with a Way to REACH THESE....HUNGRY PEOPLE WITH CELL PHONES AND MONEY TO SPEND!

WHALA! The CASH is THERE! Just waiting for YOU to go "Pick It Up"!

      Don Alm....STILL "picking up cash"
