Does Your Facebook Fan Page Suck?

I have been asked the question on facebook marketing so many times over the last few months. It seems to be one of the hottest topics not just from my offline clients, but for Offline Marketers like yourself.

Note: I will be calling facebook pages/ Business page etc = facebook fan pages for this post. I just like the sound of it better

Most have facebook marketing all wrong. I know I did. What you need to remember is that people dont want to join product fan pages (most of the time) or join a fan page for your SEO consulting business etc. They want to join something fun and / or it will benefit them.

For instance I have a ton of Real Estate clients that want to get more business by using facebook. What they have attempted (like many of you) is to create either a page titled "Real Estate City Name" or "John Jones Realtor" etc. I have been guilty of this myself in the past. I still have fan pages to my books, consulting businesses, and more.

The better approach is to create a fan page that people will not only want to join, but also participate in. Think about it. How many fb fan pages are you active on? Not joined. But really active on? If you are like most, probably not many. Usually only the ones that you are truly interested in.

I agree, Facebook is NOT a place to bore people to death with your business. People come there because they want to have fun. Keeping it fun and involving your visitors is definitely the way to go.

Some company fan pages can be OK on Facebook. It all depends on what business you are in.

Example some good restaurants that maybe offers a great deal from time to time is great. A local burger restaurang have a big fanpage on Facebook where everyone keep posting how good the burgers are etc. The burgercrew updates the fanpage sometimes with deals and updates about upcoming burgers.

Example an webshop selling ipod accessories etc And maybe have some contests aswell where an ipod could be yours for free aswell as great deals on their accessories.

So Fanpages for companies: Maybe. It all depends on what your company is all about, if you think people are willing to join/like the fanpage and spend a minute or two each month.

Very true.. the keys are to get them engage and give them benefit. I have seen much more businesses get fans through giveaway and discount on popular items. Must keep in mind that your page has to be social friendly.

I think that the fan page (using a reveal tab) is often just another form of squeeze page to get prospects on an email list.

I agree, Facebook Fan Pages are part of your online brand. You can listen to what customers say about your business and you can also communicate with your customers this way as well. You can also monetize this by capturing their email address or create a custom tab that can act like a mini web site.
Post good content, videos, blogs and also don't be afraid to post other peoples content industry related.
