On-Site vs Off-Site SEO for Clients

I was just wondering what type of SEO you guys are using for your offline clients. It seems like you would be able to get them pretty good rankings with just off-site for most local keywords (but I could be dead wrong). I was just wondering because if you're doing on-site as well that means that you would need access to their site and server in order to make changes. And seeing as how most clients with websites probably don't have Wordpress sites, you would need to have html knowledge to do so, which I don't have. Once again I could be way off-base here, but I would appreciate any feedback!

You kind of have it opposite. For most local businesses, on page works... As for no HTML knowledge, it isn't complicated. Change the <title> tags. It should take you MAYBE 30 minutes to an hour to learn all you need to about HTML tags for SEO.

iAmNameless to the rescue once again! Lol Thanks bro, ill look into it a little more. I just always seeing people advertising SEO to get sites to number one and its usually nothing more than backlinks(off-site). So I just started assuming you could do it with just off-site.

Local SEO is very lucrative and for the most part, great on page is enough, and the least time consuming. Backlinks play a major role, but if it were that simple, people would just buy a 30K backlink package and nothing more... but that doesn't work.

If you expand and start to get national clients targeting very competitive keywords, then there is much more to SEO. Granted, 85% of it would be backlinks, the link profile should be clean, and not blog comments or profile links.

If you do SEO for someone on a large scale, it is important to drive traffic, not just through the search engines but to establish a following without being dependent on google. A lot of people I see on here are charging 200 a month for SEO. I can't. I just can't get quality results and traffic for that little amount of money. I have had issues with VA's I hire because they do "SEO" but only do blog comments... or profile links... that isn't all you need for a competitive niche.

When larger companies look for someone to do SEO, they don't only want SEO.

They want brand visibility...social media marketing...reputation management...high search engine results of course... Bigger companies have departments that handle marketing, and their marketing director is using you, because you are an expert.

People think SEO is big now... but it is only going to get bigger in the next year or two. If you're starting out right now, then don't waste time, learn some basic HTML, because on page optimization helps your off page. It is too profitable to ignore a single part of it. You will notice with great on page optimization, you can rank high in local searches without doing a single backlink! I don't know about you, but I love it when I have a local client, and all I do is change the title tags and BOOM, they are in the top 5. 10 minutes of work, and the perceived value from the client is huge.

Agreed, tested and verified! Local - also known as geo-targeted - keywords are some of the easiest for which to rank. And since the traffic is targeted, a low search volume can still result in a high conversion rate. What's not to love about local SEO?

As mentioned already I find even low search numbers are valuable in local search. And I don't believe a lot of the keyword search estimates anyways.
