What are some good ways to advertise for a local restaurant?

I would really appreciate if anyone could give me some advice on new techniques or link me to some useful threads. This place has already set up a facebook page. Also, they have a website and are signed up for google places. Thanks for your help.

    Optin Email List
SMS Text Messaging With List Broadcast
Use Table Tents to push either of these as well as the checkout tape
Optimize the Google Places Page so they are found first

So, is it only online based advertising or print as well?

I ask because here ares some quick suggestions

    - Have a special offer for those who like your facebook page

-Have a downloadable coupon that only works when they share it with all their friends on facebook and or twitter - Pay with a Tweet - A social payment system

    - Create an email list for monthly give aways.

    - Create a SMS list as well.

Hook up with a local charity and have a fundraiser night of sorts. Depending on the restaurant and the charity this can be huge.

Another idea I ran with for a client was when their home town high school won state championship. I had the owner do a celebration event in the parking lot (It was in the summer) and he recieved local media coverage and become integrated within the high school spirit.

that's all I have for now since you didn't not really give any more details on the restaurant itself.

Start a "Birthday Program" as the opt-in

It's year round business because everyone has one and they are not all piled into one month of the year.

Also with Birthdays, it's more a Good Will gesture instead of devaluing the restaurants products...the margins in restaurants are not great for small independents(I own a couple, so I wouyld know) as veryone seems to think on the WF.

With restaurants, just like freebie seekers in IM, Freeboe seakers can kill you.....I tell my managers..."Sometimes if you go fishing for cheapskates, you better watch out becuase you might actaully catch some."

Have the restaurant do email marking around an "Party or Event" that they can price and not get compare to with their competition. Bundle some stuff and give a deal every 6-8 weeks. Just be talking about it in emails as upcoming just to have a reason to email 3-6 times a month.

Have them offer Nightlly or weekly Features, as something to talk about in emails or SMS. Static menus are not very good for "News" to talk about in emails. Find a "Good Enough"(as Dan Kennedy would say) reason to Throw a Party.

You guys are awesome! These are excellent ideas. Just what I was looking for. RedCell, they also do print advertising, so they would probably be open to ideas in that realm as well. I think they will love the pay with a tweet feature and they could definitely use some google places optimization. Pauli, will definitely try the birthday thing, thanks for the tips.

Buy some local bloggers dinner. Wine and dine them. Ask them to review you on Yelp Helps with your Google Places ranking too.

With a local yahoo listing your restaurant can show up near the top of the search results when someone does a search for your selected category. When they browse your listing they can click on your web address and will be taken to your web page.

I found this idea in Jon Goldman's Secret of the Watermelon. Since I have restaurant clients I will present it to them. Offer a flowering tea. They can sell it by the teapot like any other tea they offer or the customer is offered the chance to buy the whole darned package.

A flowering tea ensemble is good for up to 3 pots. So, the customer not only gets to drink tea at the restaurant but can make two more pots at home.

The restaurant will get the most bang for their buck if they buy the package from Bed, Bath and Beyond. I researched it and BBB has the overall best price.

They could even create an event around a flowering tea motif. This item lends itself to your inner creative flagpole. In other words, run it up the flagpole and see if any of their customers salute (old military saying).

I bet it goes over like gang busters (old FBI saying). Since I am out of old sayings, let me wish you luck with your venture.

Have table cards so people eating can text "biz name" to the 5 digit number. Great for sms opt in lists and people can text while at the table. Add their FB, twitter etc so people with smart phones can have something to do at the table if they wish.

You may have done this already, but its easy to overlook the obvious: get the restaurant listed in google places and all the restaurant sites out there.
