Easy add on service you can charge monthly for

I don't get on here as much as I would like to but when I do I always get great advice and ideas. Thanks to everyone for being so willing to share!

Something I haven't seen talked about (or maybe I just missed it) is Birthday Email Clubs. They have been a great upsell for me so I wanted to pass along that idea if others haven't thought about offering them before.

I work with alot of businesses who are looking for ways to turn customers in to repeat customers (restaurants, salons, boutiques), so setting up a mailing list is a no brainer. Once they are sold on the mailing list it's an easy upsell to get them to spend more to include a Birthday Email Club. I charge them to set everything up plus a monthly fee and then it pretty much runs on auto pilot.

To take it a step further I also created an app so they can have a Birthday Club on Facebook which posts happy birthday offers to their customers' walls. That way not only does the person having the birthday see it, but all of their friends also know they can get birthday deals from my client's business.

I know lots of you here have your clients using AWeber so if anyone is interested I would be happy to type up instructions on how to setup a birthday club for AWeber lists. It's not as easy as with some systems but it can be done.

Is genius too strong a word? No, no it's not. I'm Just a beginner but that idea seems pretty clever to me.

      Great idea.

I'd love to find out how to set it up on Aweber, or about your Facebook app, both sound very helpful!

I second that. This is a potential gold mine in a somewhat untapped market. Plenty of businesses im sure would risk giving something small free or even a small discount to birthday customers. I would love to know more about this as well

I find the birthday club is a really great door opener.

Most of the big restaurants do birthday clubs so if you have any restaurants as clients (or want to get some), giving them a tool that lets them compete with the chain stores in their area always gets their attention.

Spas, salons and boutiques love it because they know people treat themselves around the time of their birthdays (and they rarely do it alone). And it lets them connect with their customers on a more personal level which is great for getting repeat business.

Another thing I did was have custom code created so that I could offer a birthday club to businesses already using Constant Contact or Vertical Response. It's an easy monthly commission and a good way to show them I have good marketing ideas so they come back to see what else I can do for them.

I'll put together the AWeber instructions and post them here a little later. As for the Facebook app I had that custom coded but if anyone is interested PM me and I may be willing to help you out

A birthday club is a great idea! Would be great for offline and online businesses. I have seen restaurants occasionally promote this, but it would be great for the service industry too! And I love the facebook integration!

I am an aweber user, so please PM me the details!

      Jennifer,
This is a perfect example that simple concepts open doors, and makes add on sales simple.

For restaurants I like to approach them with the opening line "if each server sold 2 more slices of pie every shift how much more profit would you put in the bank?"

Telling some business owners that you could spread their message to thousands sound like hype.

Telling them to focus on their current customers is a quick and good way to demonstrate that YOU know what you are doing!

Getting this setup is pretty easy so I decided to just include the instructions here. Let me know if you have any questions!

Step 1: Create a new form in Aweber. Add the fields for the information you want to collect (name and email is all I usually capture unless a client insists on more). To capture birthday information, you will need to add two new fields. Create a field for "Birth Month" and add a dropdown box with the months of the year as the options. Create a field for "Birth Date" and add the numbers 1 to 31.

Step 2: Next you need to segment your list. I segment in to two groups, the first half of the month and the second half of the month. To do that go to Subscribers > Search. For the first field select "Birth Month" is "January". For the second field select "Birthdate" is less than "15". Click search. You can then name that segment "January - beginning". Repeat but this time choose "Birth Month" is "January" but for the second field select "Birthdate" is greater than or equal to "15". Click search and then save that segment as "January - end". Do this for each month.

Step 3: Once your segments are created you can schedule the birthday messages to be sent. Go to Messages > Broadcast and "Create a New Broadcast". Fill out all of the information and add your birthday message / coupon as the message. At the bottom of the page under "Schedule" select to send later and choose when you want it to be sent. I always talk to my clients about when they want it to be sent, if it is a "get 15% off any spa package during your birthday month" they like it sent a little further out than, for example, a "get a free meal on your birthday" restaurant deal. Lastly choose the segment this should be sent to (ie: January - beginning). Create a broadcast for each segment.

If you want you can segment your list so that birthday emails are sent more often so that your clients can better target their deals, but twice a month has worked fine for me and I've never had a client complain.

Unfortunatley AWeber does not allow recurring broadcasts so you will have to create one for each segment for each year. But that is a quick task and easily outsourced!

      Hope this Helps,
      Jennifer

Nicely done and you did good by giving back to the community.

Why don't you warp this up into a WSO?

        How to market it.
        How to sell it.
How to setup it up in the top autoresponders.
        Include videos.
        I think it might fly...

You may want to look at mobile and text marketing as this is just starting to take off with the sheer number of smart phones being sold. With the younger segment this may even be compulsory as they live off their smartphones.

This is great for the women and spa/beauty/ and health segments of the market, Guys are happy with a free cup of coffee....

I also agree with the text marketing avenue.

Also, I have a customer (a nightclub) who also collects anniversary dates along with the birthdays. that way they get the spouse involved as well.

Jennifer has a great idea here. Nice work! (Especially the Facebook aspect)

Thanks for the great idea, Jennifer!

I'm setting one of my clients' lists up now in MailChimp. I just have to add the birthdate field in the signup form.

When I mentioned the Birthday Club to the client, she got it right away and said Yes, let's do it.

I don't know if many of you know that, but Aweber have many features that can be sold by themselves, to several industries example:

Restaurants: Aweber allows you to send certain emails on certain pre defined dates so you can create a special email or set of emails for "social fridays" and it will send the email every friday.

or you can send emails by geographical location or segment your list according with purchase habits and send more specific emails depending what people bought or where they opt in.
