Local business and search volumes

I would love to start pushing websites out to local business owners but I have a bit problem.

Nobody, according to Google, is searching for <mylocaltown><trade>

How am I supposed to sell web sites, maintenance and SEO to people when nobody is searching for those terms?

I have broadened my search out to more local towns and even tried the council area I am in but there still isn't anything worth talking about.

Can anyone offer any advice?

As far as SEO goes, I've been told that you can't rely on Google Keyword tool to capture ALL of the accurate local search data. Those keyword terms probably are being searched and just aren't showing up in the Google keyword tool due to the low volume.

Some companies would like to capture the volume no matter how small.

Another option is to offer your services in other areas outside of your town.

However, website design service isn't reliant on search engine traffic - it's a tool that every business needs to own in order to have a proper online presence.

Just a few suggestions... hope it helps!

    That's true

You must remember that the sole purpose google was providing Keyword tool is to give their Adwords user a guideline which keywords they "should" bid on

They were gossip and rumors that google were tinkering with their keyword tool (searches for facebook keyword were so low it seems impossible), which is understandable.

With that said, you only need that number to impress business owner. The more accurate number is when you get your site ranked #1 and you see how many visitors per month to your site.

There are plenty other ways to "impress" business owner mobile site, QR codes, autoresponder, videos, FB page etc

Just because it doesn't report many people searching for it, doesn't mean that it isn't happening. City name - Trade...type searches might only get 10-20 searches a month... but they are highly targeted, high conversions.
