Best eCommerce Systems for Mobiles

So far in this offline forum we have discussed building and selling mobile websites.

We have looked at SMS platforms and the many great systems available for out clients.

The obvious next progression is what are some of the best ecommerce platforms available for mobile websites.

Just linking to some of the most popular systems only provide a very basic ecommerce that are not really mobile friendly.

Have you found any good ecommerce systems that work well on mobile websites?

There does seem to be many possiblities for SMS messaging, such as tee time management on golf courses , text reminders for salons, MOT centres, the medical professions etc.

I also wonder when theme parks are going to use them for cutting down queues on rides. Surely the technology is there to receive a text five minutes before your turn on the ride..... or maybe it is already being used.... I havent visited disneyland for a few years.

I have been looking into managing SMS campaigns from an iphone.... many services offer unlimited texts. There are a few apps for sending group texts. Admittedly it would have to be a simple campaign, and could use another service for collecting mobile numbers.

I use wordpress for most of my sites and I've been using WP tap and your WSO Quentin for normal sites.

I have been experimenting with WP eCommerce Plugin and WP Mobile Detector for one particular site - check it out on your PC and mobile - angelheartart.co.uk - it needs tweaking I admit but I know my client wants a mobile friendly ecommerce site also and as they have approx 200 products I have been trying to find an easy way to do that for them whilst keeping the cost low.

I'm open to any suggestions and improvements

I'm not certain how you're doing this right now, but your post made me think, as I am looking at implementing something similar. The best thing I've been able to come up with is, unfortunately, making a mobile webpage for each product with an order button and a "Return to Products" button on each one. The set-up will be cumbersome, but I think that it may be the best option until some readily available, mobile-optimized sql-like application becomes available. I haven't seen this done too often, except perhaps on ebay's website and video sharing sites. Y'know, video sharing site templates don't necessarily have to share videos. They merely call up an embedded vid. That embedding language could be changed to links to each product mini-site. Even though, again, the set-up would be cumbersome, the search capability would be intact.

Sorry for the stream-of-consciousness post here, but you've go my mind going.

Paypal has a full set of mobile guidelines and a real neat mobile interface, am not talking about their mobile app but actual mobile web interface, the documentation is tucked in deep in their developer site for what reason i dont know, i haven't had chance to play with it yet but it looks cool! i think its called MEC or Mobile Express Checkout

    Paypals developer site is x.com

like i mentioned on x.com there search feature isnt straight forward and doesnt take you directly to the information you need? i remember one day spending several hours trying to just find a good start pointing - i recall downloading a bunch of pdfs

      will try and find them...

now if its the same as express checkout just with a "mobile" identifier that would be great as you could simply "mobilize" a regular store/checkout and tie it into a regular express checkout process...

i would be interested in working with someone to setup a mobile commerce solution i know it would be useful for lots of people in this niche

i think the downside to using paypal express checkout is that it has a monthly fee associated with it, i know i use the virtual gateway as well as have express checkout enabled and its costing around $30/month EACH!

Some mobile devices are not able to support ssl (https so Paypal and other payment gateways will block the checkout page from those devices. Smartphones shouldn't have have problem with that though. There a lot of emerging payment gateways such as Bango.

Like moneybookers or merchant services. If i don;t have paypal and i don;t want to pay through them..i just have an credit card, what could i use?

All the current ecommerce systems we use on regular websites will have to start thinking about going mobile and it won't be long until most of them are mobile compatible. If they don't then they will lose out big time.

    Hi Guys,

With regards to MobiCart, it handles native apps and web apps so you get the best of both worlds.

Native apps have a better UI, are much faster and are much more powerful. We're working on fetaures such as barcode scannnig, checkins, store locators, voice activated search etc.

Web apps work with your mobile browser so will work on any device. MobiCart web apps are also very easy to install, just one line of code needs to be added to the head section of your website.

Best of all, MobiCart is free. I tried to post some URLs for screenshots below but I don't have enough post counts on this forum.

If you would like to see some screenshots, please visit mobi-cart.com and click on the 'how it works' tab.

    iPhone native app: (LIVE)

    iPad native app: (coming September)

    Android native app: (coming September)

    Web app phone/tablet: (Coming September)

With MobiCart you can also import your products using our CMS, .CSV or by using our API.

    Kind Regards,

        Hi Suzanne,

Thank you and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

In terms of integrating this with your current website, you can:

        1) Use the (very) simple MobiCart CMS to build your store

        2) Import your products as a .CSV

        3) Use our API and build a true integration. You can automatically import all your products into MobiCart. Then when an order has been placed, MobiCart can push the order back up to your store. You can also extend this further and manage every aspect of MobiCart from your own website.

        Thanks again,

        Wladimir

mobicart does look good but for those looking at a self hosted solution theres a wso on here based around a mcommerce script - its actually not that bad, if your a developer you could easily customize it to suit your needs, that way your hosting your own mobile cart as well as have full control of how it looks etc

its certainly a starting point if you are considering developing your own

Options are changing rapidly. I tend to favor the eCommerce solution I work on (Order SM).

Focus is more on SMS interaction between merchant and patron but I think the transactional feature is a lot smoother for the user than all the other options available now. Would be interested in feedback.

The top 4 players in m-com dev in U.S. retail, according to Internet Retailer are:

    Digby
    Branding Brand
    Unbound Commerce
    Usablenet

They are pricey, and range from $20k - $200,000.

Again, this is what many major U.S. brands (\Home Depot, Coke, McDonalds, GNC, etc.) are using to power their mcom.

2 rather fundamental Q's for this newbie: I'm a little confused about what MobiCart is... When I study its website, it lists shopping carts you can hook to.... Why would it need to hook to other shopping carts if it IS a shopping cart? From the examples it gives, it doesn't appear to be a website bulider.... I get the impression it's basically an website builder specifically geared toward ecommerce only, ie not blogs, general pages, etc... and then it needs to further hook to a shopping cart that accepts cc payments, etc. Does that sound about right?

So I could use, say, WPTouch or Quentin's program for the general website builder, and then I'd further need to hook to a shopping cart and/or MobiCart/Shopping Cart?

      This is a valuable thread!

      thanks, Eric
