Do You Have Your Own Business? Problem?

Im just wondering, for those trying to get started. If you dont have an actual legal business, what is the work around? If you cant prove you are competent with experience and a licensed business then how will a business trust you?

Most don't check... but after a month or two of doing this, there is no excuse to not be licensed.

Ok, If you got a check, you would have them cut the check to ( makeup a business name? )

No, they make it out to your name... you do this as an independent contractor until you have a real business.

Legally if you are not incorporated you are a Sole Proprietorship. If you don't want to incorporate you can do one of two things.

        1) Have them write out checks to your name. Like iamnameless said you would be considered an independent contractor.

        2) If #1 seems to "unprofessional" to you then you can file a DBA (doing business as) license. This allows you to call yourself what ever you want (as long as the name isn't already taken in your state), and will allow you to open bank accounts in the DBA name, so that you can have your clients write out checks to your DBA name. The costs varies state to state but in Georgia at least it is only 35$. Go to your states secretary of state website to find out all the details about it in your particular state.

        Hope that helps.

PS: Its only a couple hundred bucks to form an LLC and it legally protects you. And it is taxed (at least a single member LLC) just like a sole proprietorship.

Get a business license, business cards, website and then start marketing. Create a LinkedIn Profile for yourself and get some recommendations. Maybe even offer your services to one or two clients for free? If you are skilled, they will be happy to refer you. Then charge them after a few months.
