Transferring WP Site to Client (A Little Help?)

My first website for a "client"...

He has an existing site, created with Yahoo's free Site Builder. We want to keep his domain name (GoDaddy registrar).

I wanted to build the new site and get his input, be able to show it to him as I go, without taking his current site offline. I have a Host Gator account, so -- following the advice of a Host Gator support person -- I created the client's new WP site as an add-on domain of my account, the idea being that we would transfer it to the client once it's ready to go live... after he gets his own Host Gator account to which we'd transfer his new website.

Potential problem is that the client doesn't know much regarding website work. Even with step-by-step instructions, expecting him to change the domain servers for his GoDaddy domain, then execute a transfer request with Host Gator -- who will ask for ftp info, etc., that may make him scratch his head -- is asking a lot.

[Note: this "client" is a friend of a friend who is not paying me; I'm doing this for (1) experience, (2) case study, (3) referrals. If he had been paying me, I'd probably have set up a new account in his name at the beginning.]

Anyway, I'm thinking about setting up the Host Gator account FOR him, using the PayPal pay later option -- so he can then pay for it... and then get his GoDaddy info so I can change the name servers (that comes before transferring the site, right?), and then submitting the request to Host Gator to transfer the WP site from my add-on domain to his new account. (They do this free for new accounts, I believe.)

Does that sound like a good way to handle this? I thought I'd ask, in case there's an easier way.

Also, should I have done this entire project differently? I intend to fix up other people's websites (no more freebies, tho!) -- maybe complete redos like this one -- and want to find the most efficient way... so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
