an offline client wants a site to be kind of like this:
ForexVerified.com

Can anyone do this?

Or do you think that I should convince her to go with WP S2member plugin?

Is there a way to create a site like this with wp?

I agree that WP is the way to go.
There are several WP plugins available for running
the membership end. Wishlist seems to be the best.

btw if anyone knows of anything as good
or better than Wishlist, I'd love to hear!

Depends on what you need it to do.

For my money I'd take Digital Access Pass over Wishlist every day of the week (and twice on Sunday).

Also take a look at SiteManPro. $50 for unlimited domains.

@MikeMcAleer, thanks for mentioning S2member plugin for WP.
Looks like its worth checking out.

Because S2member is priced lower than Wishlist,
it may be suitable for some of my smaller
    projects and temporary member areas.
(i.e. used to deliver WSO info products)

    @KevinAKAHubcap, thanks for recommending
    Digital Access Pass & SiteManPro.
DAP is priced a little high for those quick
and temporary member sites I mentioned,
but SiteManPro might be worth a look : - )

I'm looking at the SiteManPro website now,
and don't see any mention of WP templates for
the members area. Are you familiar with this?

I don't know what you're requirements are as far as membership software is concerned but you might want to check out the ProfitsTheme.

It's a WP theme similar to Optimize Press but includes membership functionality such as protected content and dripped content as well as having membership, sales, landing and blog page templates.

As far as SiteManPro member's area templates----> It's built to work with the pages/posts of whatever theme your using. I can't be certain but I don't think they have any templates.

Obviously you people don't make sites for a living LOL. If you attempted to do this in WP you would be wasting time. Drupal AND Joomla are more fit, out of the box for this. Just because people have never used anything other than wordpress they seem to think it is the best option, well, it isn't.

.. > If you attempted to do this in WP
.. > you would be wasting time.

@iAmNameLess, you are correct... if using WordPress for a membership site, without using any of the awesome membership site plugins available for Wordpress, then Drupal and Joomla win. Otherwise, WordPress wins:

      Joomla/Drupal disadvantages

      a) learning curve required to get Joomla/Drupal installed & configured
      b) having to pay Joomla professionals to do installs/configs/mods
      c) Has only 1/1,000th the number of templates as does WordPress
      d) Joomla/Drupal are becoming "so 80's"
      e) It's not free
[Edit: correction, the main system is free. The better quality templates & add-ons are not free however]

      Advantages to using WordPress:

      a) WordPress installs in 5 minutes
      b) bazillions of plugins available
      c) plugins install with 1 or 2 clicks
      d) with proper plugins, WordPress can do same a Joomla
      e) Wordpress easy to learn
      f) Google juice (especially when using the SEO plugins, and social plugins)
      g) It's free

        Joomla/Drupal disadvantages

        a) learning curve required to get Joomla/Drupal installed & configured A simple script install, too hard for you?
        b) having to pay Joomla professionals to do installs/configs/mods Because you aren't a developer? If you have to pay someone, you don't really have the knowledge about either in order to even comment on this LOL
        c) Has only 1/1,000th the number of templates as does WordPress Wrong again
        d) Joomla/Drupal are becoming "so 80's" Wrong again
        e) It's not free Wrong again

        Advantages to using WordPress:

        a) WordPress installs in 5 minutes Others install in about 15-20 minutes, you're right... mainly because out of the box are more complete.
        b) bazillions of plugins available Same with all other CMS's
        c) plugins install with 1 or 2 clicks Same with Joomla AND Drupal
        d) with proper plugins, WordPress can do same a Joomla No, actually it can't, Joomla is much more customizable.
        e) Wordpress easy to learn Anyone with an IQ under 80 should continue to use wordpress.
        f) Google juice (especially when using the SEO plugins, and social plugins) LOL, one of the biggest misconceptions. There is no additional juice for wordpress, in fact, I would bet I have more top 3 rankings on drupal, and joomla sites, than you do for wordpress?
        g) It's free Like nearly every other CMS.

LOL... yes, for internet marketers to plop up a website in 5 minutes, wordpress is the solution. Joomla IS the most popular CMS right now. Wordpress, with proper plugins, can NOT do the same as joomla. Joomla is easy to learn, I have 180 top 3 rankings with joomla, how is wordpress better? It isn't, google favors no CMS, simple extensions can be added with any CMS though.

Clearly, you have no idea WHAT you are talking about. Joomla and Drupal, both, are the professional solution. Joomla, and Drupal are both FREE, plugins and extensions install with ONE click. If you can't figure out how to install a component, then you are an idiot that can't read. Simple loading up a zip file, clicking install, is that too hard for you to comprehend?

Look, next time you want to attempt to be clever, make sure you know what you're talking about. It sounds like you never used anything aside from wordpress. I have probably developed more wordpress sites in 2 weeks than you have your entire life. Hands down, joomla and drupal, are the more flexible and more professional solutions out of the box, not everything CAN be done with wordpress without wasting your time.

Now templates... I think you're wrong there too, I have 30K templates on my computer for joomla.

Unfortunately, nearly every wordpress site looks the same to me, and many of my clients came to me, from using someone like yourself, to build them a site in wordpress. They like the flexibility of joomla, and they like the quality. So really, I don't care if you keep spitting out misinformation, it just means more money for me when they're fed up.

Different CMS's should be used for different things. A plumber has different tools for different things, a carpenter has different tools for different things, if you want to be a web developer/designer, then you need to be flexible and use a variety of methods to accomplish what you want. Sometimes PHP is great, other times just html/css is great, other times the site needs to be done in ruby... you're limited, and you aren't a skilled developer if you aren't capable of doing different things.

Wordpress - great for extremely simple sites, blogs, and cheap clients...typically internet marketers, and hobby websites
Joomla - Great for more complex websites, clients needing professional look, and easy maintenance, with superior flexibility. Ideal for small businesses.
Drupal - Great for tiered membership, sites depending on security... drupal is famous for being used for the white house, and many universities. Very clean, very professional look. Corporate sites would be done in drupal.
Magento - The ideal ecommerce solution. If less than 40 products, I would use Joomla with the virtuemart extension I believe, but anything above that, definitely go with magento. Wordpress could never dream to do what magento does, then again, magento can't do what drupal does out of the box. This is the choice for ecommerce sites.
Dolphin and Jomsocial - Boonex dolphin would be ideal for social network development, you could try wordpress or buddy press, but you will fail miserably. Dolphin is probably the easiest and best solution for this. If you are familiar with joomla, you could also develop using JomSocial, which might be good enough but might not, depending on what you are trying to do. Dolphin in my opinion is more flexible, and you will be wasting time with JomSocial.

Point is, if you claim you are a web developer, there isn't a one stop solution. You should be using all of the options out there. If not, then not only are you not what you claim to be, but you're missing out on money. You're missing out on a lot of money. Usually people that say they use one CMS and never any other, they don't know how to code, it is as simple as that.

In the 90's we distributed electronics to installers in the home automation (HA) industry. (smart homes, automated drapes & window coverings, lighting, hvac, voice control, if-then logic for what music might play based on who is home and/or who is in what room)

There was a system called Unity that started at $10k. To be an installer you had to have a minimum of 3 employees (one for sales, one for installations and one for phone support) and go thru their extensive training in Redwood City. Unity was the big daddy of HA systems. Touch screens (for control) built into the walls (and this was back in the 90's!) I mean Unity did everything.

Well at least what they decided to design into it.

At the same time, came some brand new open systems. They were all modular in nature, and different manufacturer's systems would be compatible with other manufacturer's systems. Kinda like lego building blocks, but mix & match with Lincoln Logs and erector sets. You could do virtually anything. Now installers started to realize that Unity didn't think of everything, and had limits. They were quickly gong from big daddy, the dinosaur.

I see Joomla/Drupal as slowly becoming the new dinosaur (like Unity), more and more coming into the shadow of WordPress.

And Wordpress being the new modular system (like the new modular HA systems) with the bold and bright future.

Regarding WordPress verses Joomla.... again with all due respect, this issue seems to be that you're a Joomla guy, who worked his but off over the years and loves Joomla and is great at it, and kudos to you for that... but you must be open minded about WordPress as the Internet landscape is changing. (see my previous posting, about Joomla becoming the dinosaur)

Re the 30k templates, OMG I didn't realize joomla had that many! (btw just one Wordpress template site, ThemeForest, has more than that many)

....but I think most of those 30k are part of the pathetic sea of lousy home-made free Joomla templates--most of which are made by teenagers and are virtually all black (white textcopy against all black background with black menubars and black dropdowns) or anime style, warez style, etc.

...they don't know how to code, it is as simple as that.
As for calling me idiot--in working for AT&T Bell Labs at the time we developed C language was developed (hint: without my job, there'd be no your job), plus development of many original Unix (now Linux) commands--if you & I had a contest I could probably program circles around you. No wait, actually you'd win, as I hardly do coding nowadays. btw Bill Gates used to challenge his employees to programming contests.... but now he's too busy being CEO.

Yes, I used Joomla for years--and figured it out myself the first time around, but then I realized that playing monkey mechanic is not the most efficient way to earn the real moolah, which is why I outsourced Joomla work in the future. As far as one-click components you mentioned, we actually went beyond that, e.g. integrating cgi/perl and php scripts into our members areas, plus doing some other things. (like integrating with aMember including pswd and dating syncing with amember)

So with respect to calling me a technical idiot, a bunch of times : - ) ....whether or not I have a serious technical background is not important, because I chose to focus on marketing & entrepreneurship, and prefer to leave the nuts-and-bolts stuff for those who are best at it. (like yourself)

With all due respect, one day you will grow to realize that it's better to own the garage than be one of the monkey mechanics. (sorry if that sounded harsh, didn't mean it to be, but that's just how it is)

    My 2 cents,

Everyone is right so far. Joomla would be good. WordPress would be good. Drupal would be good. You could static program it and it would be good. Its more important to find someone that understands your requirements exactly and can implement them. Programming is like music everyone has their opinions.

Find someone that understands you that you can easily communicate what you want and you'll be happy with the outcome. Don't choose what platform to program on unless you know what your talking about otherwise you just hear the same verbal vomit from them that is not going to help you at all.
