Local Business online listing

Hi:

I just wanted some feedback from people. My business partner and I live in Canada and are looking into setting up a site for a specific niche and city where business's pay to get listed.

So people would be typing into Google: [city name] plumbers

Canpages and yellowpages usually rank on the first page for business listings so do you think this would just be a waste of time to compete with them?

Funny that you mention this as I have a few similar sites for ranking the best plumbers in the city. Depending on the city and the keywords you choose, I would look for keywords that canpages aka yellowpages are not listed on. Choose 10 of these keywords and move on to your seo. Just make sure these words are being search 1000+ locally and you will do fine. With 10, 1000 keywords, you will have 10,000 potential searches to your directory. Hope this helps.

We use Wordpress for all our sites, which today number about 400. The thing about the yellow pages is that they are limited by the number of keywords for which they can rank. AND, even more importantly, they cannot have a Google Places listing. Why? Because they themselves are not the company. Google's new algorithms are still being tested hence the reason why sometimes you'll see the organic listings showing up above Google Places. But, in supposedly, an ideal world the Google Places listing will show up BEFORE the organic.

If you SEO correctly, with the right number and quality of back links, you can out perform the yellow pages - guaranteed.
