I'd be willing to set up anyone a demo of Twilio and openvbx on my servers. I just set it up over the weekend and have been digging in. I've got the room and can setup a demo subdomain for you if you'd like to test it out.

Or I could even set it up on your own domain. I feel like I've learned so much from this forum, maybe this is a small way for me to give back.

Hope u don't mind a question. I uploaded OpenVBX to my server using Hostgator & everything went find But then I was unable to get to the url of the install. I kept getting page not found. In fact, in the list of files, I do not even see an install file - I only see index.php and that's the url I went to.

Any idea where I could have gone wrong?

Have you tried navigating to the install folder and not using index.php? Also, I would upload the files without the openvbx folder that expands from the zip. If all else fails, maybe the upload was corrupted/interrupted, try re-uploading.

The installer should have opened automatically, so try the above and then let me know.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. Where ever you uploaded the files to.

For example my was in app.mydomain.com

All I had to do was navigate to app.mydomain.com -- I didn't have to include index.php or anything else. There installer is based on the index file.

There is no install file/folder. Sorry for the confusion

Once you upload the files you will see an index.php and that will open in your browser once type in the address of the folder: domain.com/openvbx

If not you may get a database error in your config file settings arent correct but thats really the only two scenarios that should happen.

What do you mean "The installer should have opened automatically?"I uploaded it using file manager in Hostgator. Why would it then begin to install automatically?

It took me forever to install it on my server but I finally got it up, but I don't know how to actually use it. I've been reading you need to install plugins and I can't seem to install those. I can't find the ones people are saying you need. Can anyone help with this?

i did a video tutorial last night that walks you through plugins, setting up flows, etc. You can view it from the link in my sig. Its 27 minutes long, but it should answer alot of your questions if you have them regarding how to actually use the software.

  Never seen such a pain in the arse product to install and get working.I finally got it. Was driving me mad. Had to figure it out.I was pasting the url of the index.php file in the browser. But I had to paste the url of the installed openvbx folder.

Or lets say the set up. The first time you visit your index.php it will let you fill in info needed to connect to your database.

I'm excited to check out the video when I get back to computer. For a quick summary, upload your plugins into the plugins folder. The two you'll need are the subscription plugin and the matching plugin. Both are found on the openvbx site. I was going to put together a bunch of screen shots but won't need to if there is a video.

Twilio's OpenVBX has plugins written for it. The subscription plugin is what you'll need to send out SMS to an entire list.

I think I will do both but selling it and walking out the door is probably no good. It will fail if they don't work it and then they don't blame themselves but "this crappy text thing we paid for that didn't work".

OTOH managing campaigns is work so we have to charge more.

I think letting them manage it is fine but they need coaching for a month or so and then when they see results they are willing to continue using it.

There are some who are savvy and motivated and can just be let to run with it. But its a judgment call.

Never underestimate how little they know compared to most of us.

Thanks LuvFoxy! I was going to point that out too, but you beat me too it. With the 30 free that Twilio Gives you, plus the promo code, that will definitely be enough to test out the system.

Are you able to add any social media plugins or email plugins?

Not that I've found yet. There are some options for limited interaction. You can have a twitter message as part of the flow. Also there is a plugin based on foursquare checkins. But nothing along the lines of twitter posting or email marketing.

I've been in talks with a couple developers to build me a "Social Communications" platform. Once manager that includes email, social, and SMS in one platform. I'd use Twilio to power the SMS, and likely the MailChimp API to power the email solution. We'll see how that progresses.

I still wonder how to sell the Twilio system. Manage campaign for customers or just build the system for customers and let them play with it...?

Right now my model is built around managing the campaigns and analytics for them. I am working on a self service option for the occasional one off message. But based on experience if you leave it to the business owner to run, it won't happen. It'll just sit there.

Not sure why the code doesn't work anymore. Maybe expired.

Just a quick update, I've been talking with Chad about developing a scheduler plugin for OpenVBX and I am waiting on his costs.

From a personal update, I've decided that OpenVBX isn't the right solution for what I want to do. So I've bit the bullet and decided to fork up a large licensing fee for a fully developed system.

Beauty is that in a couple weeks, I'll be up and running, and won't have to worry about the technology.

As a side note, I do have the option of reselling and private labeling the system. So if anyone is still searching, here's some highlights:

3 Levels - Standard Accounts - Private Label - Reseller

Standard Accounts include unlimited keywords and competitive text costs based on volume.

Private Label - Allows you to brand the system to you and create multiple user accounts. Allow clients read only or admin access, or just do it all yourself.

Reseller - Allows you to resell private label accounts to other clients/partners/companies/agencies/etc.

I am going the managing route. I think you'll be able to get more money too. Before you demo it for a business, build a demo flow for them so they can experience it for themselves. Takes some preparation but I can almost guarantee you'll get the sale when they experience how it works. Position yourself as their IT/Marketing guy and don't let on how easy it was and quickly you put it together. Every niche is different though and has different needs. Restaurants and nightclubs are perfect for just building it and managing it for them.

If you go the OpenVbx route, you can skin the template however you want. So you can use that as your front end for your client if you wanted to. I'm not sure that's the best use yet, I'm still working on that. But from a design standpoint, it's possible

Right. But just enclosing the OpenVBX script inside your site or even by itself in a subdomain would work as an interface. Switch the logos out, remove the twilio link at the bottom and your done. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Subscription is whatever I want as a markup from what I pay Twilio.

Can you post the error code here? I had the same problem and found a fix for it, but I forgot what it was! if you post the error code I think I'll remember.

Its seems to be an error with the OpenVBX notifications function. Everything works properly, but it's just ugly.

It's a known issue, and fairly widespread. (I have it too.)

I'm hoping its addressed in an upcoming release. From what I can tell its across multiple plugins, so something was changed in the coding along the way.

There is a way to make it go away if you want to alter the openvbx code.

I might fix it later down the road but if everything works properly I'll just leave it for now. Your right it sure is ugly. I also can't seem to receive sms messages from my twilio number to my cell phone and it says I don't have a phone number when I try to send to a test group. I know I installed everything.

Did you get a number from Twilio yet? Or are you still using the sandbox number. I know there are some restrictions on the sandbox number. I just set up a local number right away.

Once you get your number, you'll need to attach it to your flow.

Once the number is in your account, you can send your messages and such.

Ok, that's the error code alright. This is what I did to fix that.

Go to index.php and turn off notices. You can turn them off by making this change

Look for this line...

"error_reporting(E_ALL);"

change to

error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);

Once I did that everything looks fine now. Just be careful that you only change that line though. Everything works even with the errors, but it was really annoying me too.

Yeah, that is the major downfall of this system at this point. I've been talking to a few developers about coding a system for me. One would be a front end for twilio separate from openvbx, the other would be to create some plugins

Yeah that would be great. I am surprised Twilio hasn't done that yet since that's a basic function on so many other platforms.

Will do. Right now I'm looking at the feasibility (cost) of a schedule message plugin and a sent message plugin in. Right now there is no way of seeing sent messages. I know I could create a work around, but I'd like to have a list of messages sent, etc. Ideally they would be sorted by phone number and keyword, if that's possible.

I put together a "birthday club" app today using OpenVBX and works like a charm.
Customers call the number, then press the number that corresponds to their birthday month. (1 for January, 2 for Feb, etc) They then get a text confirmation message and short explanation of what they get as a member of the club and the mobile number is stored into the respective month's list.

Now I just need a plugin to schedule each month's digital coupon to go out to people whose birthday is in each month (list). I could do it manually on the 1st of each month, but a scheduler would be ideal.

You can send to a group list with OpenVBX. Just put your mouse to the right of the list in the subscriptions, and under the SMS tab and click on it. A window will open to type your message to send to the whole list. You can also send a voice blast by clicking underneath the Call tab too.

I've installed it and have it working on HostGator. One important prerequisite is that you need Curl installed on your server. Did that over chat. It's not entirely an easy install but if you're technically adept and pay attention it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I suppose in the long term, a custom Twilio app is the way to go.

I have found a scheduling plugin search for Fuitad / OpenVBX-Plugin-Scheduling. I don't know if this is officially sanctioned by OpenVBX yet as it does not appear on their Plugins list.

I plan on using Twilio for offline sms marketing. However, I am a complete newbie and was wondering if I should get a merchant account to accept credit cards for offline businesses. Also, should I setup a DBA or LLC. I'm trying to minimize costs as I don't have a lot of money. TIA.

  In regards to merchant accounts that has been my main offline business and I've be doing it for seven years. When making that decision you have to think of how you will be handling the payment aspect of your business. Do you want to be able to accept credit cards at the time of sale when meeting with the business to secure a deposit or set-up fee? Are you planning on having recurring monthly fees? Would you like to invoice your clients via email and allow them to pay via check or credit card through the online invoice? Would you like to mail them an invoice and have them pay on your website? Would you like to be able to have some input and be able to respond against chargebacks? Would you prefer to have you credit card sales deposited directly into your bank account? If you don't plan on doing many transactions the third party payment solutions are not a bad way to go. However for your brand image and ease of use for your clients I believe a merchant account is the way to go. If you have any questions please feel free to IM me and I'll be happy to assist you.

Interested to get these plugins going. WHat about a front-end for clients to login and send their BLAST texts to their subscribers?

This Twilio looks so cool, but I keep hearing that it actually takes a hell of a lot more to really get it working in a manner that can be sellable to a small biz client

Chad Smith has done a scheduling plugin, although you do have to set up a cron job to make it work.

You can have a client log into OpenVBX but that may be opening a big can of worms.

Better to construct the flow so that a business owner (or group) can send a message to a whole list right from their cell phone. Use the dispatch plugin and set it so that when the message is coming from the business owner's cell phone, anything other than the keywords (or stop to unsubscribe) gets sent to the list you designate. That way they never have to "log in" to anything. No one can reply or send other than the person(s) you designate. That is Chad Smith's dispatch plugin.

I would still be careful of allowing the business owner to be in control of everything. I have found that they generally don't have a clue when it comes to marketing. If you hand over everything, they could screw things up pretty quickly. For example, they would have to remember to keep it to 160 characters and to have the unsubscribe blurb at the end of out going messages. Work with them for awhile before you hand over the keys to the kingdom.

What I need to know now is if and HOW I can track the amount of texts being sent through my Twilio setup (through OpenVBX)???

I just need a simple way to tell how many texts are being sent by whom to which list, so I can know how many outgoing texts a particular client is sending.

any other analytics solutions that are more comprehensive? not necessarily so my clients can see everything (that would be nice too), but atleast so I can go in and see

This is the most important thing in it which should be cared for doing so. Once you upload the files you will see an index.php and that will open in your browser once type in the address of the folder: domain.com/openvbx. I like the way to do so.

Use PayPal, Google, or Amazon for payments to start. They all allow you to take credit cards almost immediately without the issues related to getting a merchant account. Yeah, you pay a bit more but it's a good way to start.

Text/call scheduling is a feature of this software. From what I see on their site is that you sign up for so many messages a month under a paid account. I guess to broadcast to a list you would need to upload your subscription list of phone numbers and then schedule when the blast would occur. At any rate, I lost interest when I saw the pricing. I just thought I would put MemoryAide.com out there since it was listed when I did a search on the Twilio forums for text scheduling.

Chad has not given me a firm price. He is busy porting OpenVBX so that it can handle short codes when Twilio launches them.

I've talked to some other programmers and the response is fairly expensive...

At this point that is a major thing lacking in the OpenVBX platform. I've also looked at the development of an adobe air application that can use twilio, but that's some time down the road.

Ultimately, I want to sell to my clients and not constantly work on bugs, so I've decided to go a different path.

An alternative that looks like it might have some scheduling capability (although I don't know if you will need to be a developer or if the ability is built in) is Tropo (using Quartz from Java). The pricing appears a little higher on somethings than Twilio. At any rate, I got some validation of my concept for scheduling text messages through the OpenVBX forum. I will be attempting to implement the concept over the next few days to see if it works. I will keep you posted.

I was reading on the Twilio site about porting an existing number for a business to your Twilio account. Their site mentions that porting is free but you need to have an upgraded account. Anyone have any experience in this feature and, after porting, can you then use the OpenVBX calling features on the ported phone number?

  For those who have used Twilio/OpenVBX and have clients, I would like to hear about your strategies on how to charge your clients. My initial feeling is to setup a free text based campaign first, let the client see the results, then charge monthly thereafter for additional campaigns. For those that sign up, upsell the customers on some of the phone features, such as joining the text message club through calling the business's phone number.

  Chad Smith has added scheduling to his Outbound plugin. The only issue is that it appears as though you need to download OpenVBX afresh in order to exercise cron jobs. He mentions "This plugin requires a modified version of OpenVBX to allow for plugin hooks, subpages and cron jobs. Download the modified version from my fork". (You must do a search on gitHub as I cannot post the link here because of my number of posts...search for Outbound). Has anyone tried this updated Outbound version? Not happy about having to reinstall OpenVBX.

Wow! Thats a 100% Markup on shortcodes!

CITA/CSC charges $500 for random shortcode and $1000 for a Vanity short Code per Month...

Keep in mind, when you buy (rent) a short code those fees are due and non refundable even in the event that the Carriers decide against supporting your short code.

Approval must be applied for to each Cellular Carrier separately and can take 3 months or more to get a response.

That means when you pay for that short code you will have the rights to the number with no guarantee that the Carriers will support it.

It also means you will have to pay those monthly fees while waiting for approval as well, which may or may not actually happen!

This is my first time on this thread and I kind of landed here by accident. I was on my way to checking out Twilios's website, when the link to this thread caught my eye.

I'm trying to nail down an SMS carrier and I'm also leaning toward the long code option.

It seems pretty obvious that this thread is devoted to to the virtues of Twilio and open VBX. Could some of you give a brief overview of why you'd choose Twillio over some of the other options out there.

I'm kind of interested in Yeez, which is another long code system, but wanted to compare it directly with Twilio. So, why would you choose Twilio over Yeez, for example?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Gerry, I'm not a Twilio expert, but the biggest issue to my mind is that you have to create the 'front-end'. Can you do that?
I went with Yeez, since the offer the short code option also if the size of the blast requires it. Avid apparently offers unlimited keywords with their short codes at no extra cost, but not sure how that works.

I might not be tech savvy enough for the front end set-up for Twilio and their site didn't exactly blow me away with info. I'm not knocking their service...I'm just saying that they didn't provide enough info to thoroughly answer my questions.

So far I'm most interested in Yeez and Avid Mobile. I do like the fact that Yeez does offer the short code option in addition to long codes and their service seems to have been created by folks with a strong understanding of marketing in general...and how to apply it to SMS.

Avid Mobile is the other front runner for me at this point. I like their program as well. I must have missed or forgotten the part about unlimited keywords. That's a biggie for me...one of my primary considerations. Guess I'll to go back and re-study their site.

I've read other Warriors recommend other providers such as TxT180, and others that I can't immediately bring to mind. It gets kinda confusing with so many options to check out and compare.

If you or any one else out there has has a strong case to make for a provider that offers: low start-up costs, reasonable costs per text, unlimited keywords, reasonable monthly costs (if any), and great support...I'd be grateful for the info. I figure that listening to the experiences of others is one of the best ways to decide.

I'm looking to pull the trigger within the next week to 10 days so I'm scrambling for as much last minute info as I can get.

I can surely dig that....Right with you on that one! There's a bunch of info to absorb!

I've been been following different threads, visiting vendors sites, and asking questions about this, off and on, for a while now.

As my intended launch date is drawing near, I'm needing to make a good decision, choose a vendor and pull the trigger....just as soon get it right the first time.

Starting out with limited resources makes start-up cost, monthly costs and flexibility prime considerations. On the other hand, I don't intend to stay small for long and need a platform that can handle my needs as I grow.

Anyway, stay tuned...let's see what all these good folks can tell us.

No, not at all. My mp3s always play immediately. If you have a large mp3, there might be a little loading time, but I've tried 5 meg mp3s and generally they start playing right away.

the folks at Twilio are pretty quick to respond, just email help@twilio.com and they will get back to you within a day with what could be the answer.
