I got one! Now what do I charge?

Hey everybody,
I stopped in a local used book shop the other day and sold some books
to him. I asked him how business was and he said it was so-so. I asked
him if he'd ever thought about getting a mobile website so he could capture more tourists (lots of tourists here) and then I showed him his site on my phone, and then a site of a local bar I did. He was impressed with the mobile site. I told him I was having a sale on mobile sites right now for only $199.

Well he ordered two (he has two stores, his daughter runs the other one), and he asked me to put a new header and add a page to his existing site that is through www.ChrisLands.com.(a bookstore website company) The page will have pictures of some artwork he has for sale. He said he can add the descriptions and prices later. His daughter had me put a "Like" button on her site, which I did and also added a Title tag cuz there wasn't one and did some basic SEO on it.(hers is a Wordpress site) She also wants me to put an Icon of some books that will link to her Facebook Page, but I'm not sure how to do that, but I'll figure it out. I uploaded his pics to his site, but haven't created the page yet, or made the header. The folks at ChrisLands.com are very helpful and the administration area of the site looks like it shouldn't be too hard to do what I need to do.

Well, he told me to come in an pick up a check today, and I am excited because I really need the money! So, it's $398 for the two mobile sites...
but I don't know how much to charge for the other stuff! I'm thinking about $598 for everything. Any suggestions? I'd like more! I'm having a hard time with pricing. I told him I was going to give him a good deal and that I would make sure he was happy with my work.

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated!
Thanks!

Kathy

In my opinion, don't be greedy mate. As soon as you land this deal, they'll be calling you every time they need something done, caus you'll be their " internet guy", don't force them to call somebody else caus of your prices!

Just make sure they know up front that your time is worth $100 for any portion of an hour in the future.

Here's a nifty Facebook Gadget you can use to supplement your income in a short time: a question of weeks only, or just use it for fun. - you’ll make a lot of friends; that’s for sure!

        Hi Charliebee,
Wow! Really? I could get used to that!

        Thanks for your suggestion!

No, I don't want to be greedy. I've shopped at his store for years and this could be a good source of referrals, and they're very nice folks. I'm thinking I'll do it all for $500.

      Thanks for your feedback,

Kathy, I think $598 sounds about right - the additional work you did was adding a like button, designing a custom header, basic on-page SEO and inserting the book icon which links to a Facebook page, right?

      Paul,
Correct! Thanks for your comment. It's going to be somewhere between $500 and $598....
I'll figure this stuff out eventually!

Sounds about right to me. One of the things I find is it is hard to get the balance right, charge too much and no more work or referrals from that client, charge too little and they believe that what you do isn't that important!

      Fawkes,
Ain't that the truth? Balance is important.
I'll over deliver at a good price and get some great referrals, too!

          Thanks, Joe!
I went to a birthday/going away party for a girlfriend Friday night and the next day her boyfriend asked me to make a mobile website for him for his pizza parlor and handed me $200 cash, a logo and some menus!

Then Saturday night a guy asked me to make him a regular site and a mobile site for his tugboat company! Then a tree service guy asked me for a site, too! I said "Show Me the Money" and I'll get started when I'm done with the ones I'm working on now.

When it rains it pours! I think things are finally turning around for me. I start a JOB as a bartender at an ocean front resort tomorrow, but hopefully I won't have to work there for too long. It's only 3 nights a week, but it will be a good place to meet local business people and make
some extra money. The tips should be good.

          Have a great week!

$597 Minimum and also charge $15 per month maintenance including hositn for each mobile site. Then come back here and research what else you can offer and do for them to increase their business and offer em that after 2 weeks to 2 months. Yeehaaa

        Hi Kathy,

Great job on being at the right time and the right place to land a deal.

My only input on this is that you consider delinking your charge from time spent, and start thinking in terms of value provided to the business. The changes you made are going to make this business way more than $500 if the owner knows what he is doing.

        Best of luck to you.

    Great work Kathy.

This just shows you how sparking up a simple conversation with a simple question "How's business?" can lead to a deal.

This is a trait of a true entrepreneur.

Yes, all it takes is a simple question and who knows what might happen!
