Benefit of lot's of Facebook "Likes"?

Can someone tell me the benefit of having a lot of people "Like" your facebook fan page? When someone presses "Like" on a fanpage, does that make them a friend or something? Increase some search ranking somewhere? What?

Sorry but I only have a personal facebook page and I still don't understand the whole facination about it. But I guess I gotta learn.

It puts them on your Facebook list, somewhat similar to an email list. Whenever you post an update, they ( and all their friends that visit their wall ) see what you posted.

I think Facebook goes a little "overboard" with the privacy stuff, but it works out for marketers!

Alot of people use Facebook over myspace nowadays and it's just a great venue to promote your products and services to people who know you and like you. The quality of the traffic that you get from facebook may be questionable, but in the end it's all designed to boost your traffic and sales.

I feel like it acts as "Facebook SEO" as well. I find it hard to believe that not many people have mentioned this anywhere, but if you search for "Car repair", the first pages that show up are the ones with most likes afaik.

That is why I am a firm believer in getting "fake" likes to get a page started. It adds credibility to the page. No one wants to go to an empty restaurant, because it look suspicious.

      - Replaces your news letter: imagine that you send an article or post to someone and not only they, but also their coworkers, clients, friends and family reads it!
      - Builds backlinks (allthough search engines are adapting quickly, you need good content on your facebookpage!!)
      - It simply your second website and it needs to look convincing (if you don't have any likes, just don't start a facebook page it will damage you more to have one in this case!)

BTW one of the best indexed sites is linkedin, so for backlinks and if you are into B2B this is certainly a place to look at!!

The more "likes" you have the more audience you have to speak to. You can create your own surveys and get an idea of what your target market wants to know. Then you can create a product or service that addresses the needs of their problems.

It's also very cost effective because you eliminate printing cost, so you're "going green" which is big with some companies that want to help the environment.

I went to a leadership seminar on Friday and the CFO of Coca Cola and Founder of ChickFila talked about how they we're going to spend millions in "green products" and Social Media because they were surprised about how powerful Social Media was. Coca Cola CFO also mentioned that their consumers started their Facebook Fan Page which was a wake up call for him about how they needed the change the way they communicate with consumers today.

As simple as "liking" in Facebook seems, it's all the free advertisement that you get with each likes you get. When someone likes your fan page, it'll appear on their wall and his / her friends get to see it as well. And if others get interested, the chain of hassle-free exposure continues on its own.

It goes beyond "Likes." Likes aren't good enough. Just because someone likes your clients page doesn't mean it gets any visibility or traction in the news feed with their daily posting. With the average person having 130 friends, that's a lot of "visibility" to serve up in the news feed.

Facebook serves up people/fan pages you interact with the most first. I have tons of pages I have liked and have never seen in my news feed because I have never interacted with that page after the initial like...so it almost disappears unless I sort by recent.

I have a couple of fan pages that I comment on, like their content, etc and I see there stuff almost first every time in my feed.

Likes are for ego boost. Interaction is for traction and exposure.

I don't know how accurate this study is SHOCKER: 3% To 7.5% Of Fans See Your Page’s Posts but their research shows that maybe 10% of your fans will see your posts daily, and the more fans you have, the smaller that percentage gets.

True, although I'd recommend using both since you don't really own your fan page. An email list you can backup and move to another provider if anything happens to your service provider - if something happens to FB or they decide to take down your page like they temporarily did to Roger ebert, you're just outta luck.

In either case, remember that you need to interact with your fans/email subscribers on a regular basis and provide them with value in addition to the occasional sales pitch.

This story was on my local news last month and I decided then and there to cancel my page.

"Report reveals the Like button follows you everywhere. But do people care?"

The Wall Street journal have recently issued a report that will likely alarm a lot of you, into how Twitter and Facebook track users who click on the Tweet or Like button, respectively. According to their report, even if you don’t click on the button but are logged into your profile, you are being tracked and, in the case of Facebook, will have your data held onto for 90 days. While we obviously would come to expect the tracking that comes with interacting with the Like button, this will probably come as a surprise for many users. According to Facebook this tracking is totally anonymous and is used for the purposes of advertising, as well as actions such as showing you which of your friends have Liked a post. Story

The part that bothers me the most is:
"Facebook or Twitter know when one of their members reads an article about filing for bankruptcy on MSNBC.com or goes to a blog about depression called Fighting the Darkness, even if the user doesn't click the "Like" or "Tweet" buttons on those sites.

For this to work, a person only needs to have logged into Facebook or Twitter once in the past month. The sites will continue to collect browsing data, even if the person closes their browser or turns off their computers, until that person explicitly logs out of their Facebook or Twitter accounts, the study found."

As for me, I have a huge problem with my online actions being monitored from one thing to another. I had no idea that simply clicking on a *like* button would give permission to start following me elsewhere without my permission or knowledge. Others may not see this as much of a problem. It's just good to know what's happening to you while online. But good luck.

Social proof, ie- if a lot of people like something it must be good (not neccessarily true but that's how people think.

Plus, you can uses your fans as a type of mailing list.

There's been studies done showing that people who are members of a Facebook fan page spend more on average than people who aren't on the fan page. Of course, the question then becomes what came first the chicken or the egg? In other words, do people spend more because people who like a Facebook page are more loyal to the brand anyway or does becoming a member of the Facebook fan page actually make them spend more money. Here's one study: http://www.syncapse.com/media/syncap...cebook-fan.pdf

As so many other people mentioned, it's good for social proof.

In order to succeed with Facebook, it has to be full time effort.

Have you ever seen someone using Facebook? Chatting with 5 people at the same time, looking at people's photos, responding to messages, with music or TV in the background...

That's not a great selling environment. So you need to do extra work, you can't just depend on people "Liking" your page.
