You first use a tool like 'Google insights' and find the highest searched term related to your company.

2nd: You will want to name your photos and videos these top searched key terms. Ie: Joescrabshack.img.12345676 Rename to: Seafood Restaurant

3rd: Use the max 10 photos and the max 5 videos and name these accordingly and upload to GP.

4th: Play the 'Google Waiting Game' you will see great results in a short time if the business has an online presence, if not, may take longer to rank nicely.

If is a newer biz, you will need 'citations' or other local directory listings in your area. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, what do you mean by citations exactly? For example if it is a real estate agent with no online presence until now what would I need to get to the top spot of Google?

I read somewhere that back linking the maps page helps increase ranking?

Nothing to sell, only value to give and new knowledge to learn.

I'd like to make a little clarification on a couple of points here:

        - renaming your photos with a keyword stuffed name does not really have any effect on the rankings; the only thing that could help is if you place photos with keyword names on third-party websites and then they could appear high in the Google Images search; no effect whatsoever on the ranking of your listing though

        - I'd suggest if you don't have 10 photos and/or 5 videos to over-stuff this section as well - as I said previously pictures don't have effect on your Place page ranking; same goes for videos. If your Place page manages to get pictures from third-party directories (most often Panoramio before, and Yahoo and Citysearch nowadays), this would help up your ranking.

        - I'd also suggest you don't simply wait for Google to rank you/your client high. Set the "signals" for that to happen as fast as possible. And I'm not talking about pinging citations or backlinking your Place page. Take the time to list the business on at least 15 quality relevant directories. Use a few generic ones, such as the ones that were mentioned above, and then go for local/vertical ones. You can easily find them out using the Whitespark Local Citation Finder for Local SEO or the Local Search Toolkit | Your Local Search Headquarters

I disagree as I have been part of a large team of nationwide folks all training the ins and outs of GP. We all have found that keywording the videos mainly has had a major ranking effect for our clients. I have several #1 spots by just doing the videos alone. Matter of opinion here i guess...but lets not call it 'clarification' please lol

I'd be honestly interested in seeing Place pages ranking on A spot just because of videos. Please, provide some reference.

Use basic SEO. Optimize the listing for what local people would type in. Employ the use of photos and videos. Raise the number of relevant backlinks coming into the google places listing.

What you want to do first before even creating a google maps listing is to create listing

    Superpages
    Yellowpages
    Yelp
    Local.com

Then you create your google map listings.

Google will then pick you up.

Make sure that when you create your listings on the directory site you have already did your keyword search on what terms are being searched for the displays the Google map.

You guys are welcome! Dont be shy to hit the 'Thank' button at the bottom of my thread!

Citations are basically backlinks. Spread your realtors name around yelp, yellow pages online etc etc-these are citations. Be sure to put up some reviews on each as well....

Google states that it can take 4-6 weeks for your changes to appear in Google Maps, but usually happens more quickly. Check your listing periodically and update it as needed to keep your prices, services and product lines fresh
