Is my clients competitor using 'black hat' methods?

Here are the facts: (websites changed to protect the innocent )

My clients page: DirtyPaperBagIdeas.com (ranked #8)
His competitor: Dirty-Paper-Bags.com (ranked #1)

My client was able to talk to a former employee at D-P-B.com and view his current webmaster tools account (I have no idea how he did that).

D-P-B.com's top search queries in google are for "soldiers" and "airplanes", with a couple hundred clicks in the last 30 days...these 2 phrases are completely unrelated to their websites.

Interesting thing is that if you google "soldiers" or "airplanes" the site does not even show up on the first 50 pages.

Excluding these 2 phrases, my client outperforms his competitor by a high margin in other Webmaster Tool categories.

Both sites are SEO'd well, though the competitor does have more backlinks at the moment.

Any thoughts on why D-B-P.com might be getting so much traffic from these unrelated terms? And is there a chance these terms are giving the website a direct boost to keep it so high in the rankings?

Thanks

Any reason why you are concerned about your competitors black hat strategies? especially since you say these terms are unrelated to your website. Since they are unrelated terms, that means non-targeted traffic no? You shouldn't be loosing out then.

I'm not a SEO expert; hopefully you'll get some expert opinion soon.

I am also curious about what others have to say on a website not ranking in Google for a term that brings the most traffic to it.

In reality, I guess I am not to concerned about the method used, but most curious as to if it is affecting its ranking for the keywords related to both site.
