Building a wikipedia page for a client

I have been asked by a client to create a wikipedia page and link out from it.

Of course I said sure it'll cost you $x

What I'm wondering now is what the merits of this will be? Will it bring more visitors? Surely linkedin and facebook are better for traffic than wikipedia.

What are your views?

It's quite unlikely that the page will stay on Wikipedia for long, unless it's of huge benefit for the many readers. The user moderators on there are incredibly quick to shut down promotional pages.

I thought so. What would be a better solution if there aim is to generate traffic?

comments or references in Wikepedia. also on Q&A sites such as AOL Answers, Yahoo Answers. I like also manual work in relevant forums. also a good PR blast never hurt anyone.

OK, I am speaking completely from the gut as I have never tried to set up a wikipedia page for a client.

I would think it could be done, as long as it was informational about the company.

If you check out the Microsoft Page or the Apple Page, you will see that you can have a page for a company.

Granted, these are both publicly traded companies, so that might have somethign to do with it.

But, I would imagine that if you set up a page about the company, when it was created, who the founders are. Then have a overview of their services and especially if you can give a history of services (such as in 1999, they began doing xyz and in 2008 they stopped doing abc) it would give credibility to the listing.

I would probably only link back to the about page of the website and not to a sales page. Also, I would do several links that referred back to press releases or news articles that highlight what is in the page.

In my best guess (and that is all it is), you can build the page but it cannot have the slightest hint of being a sales/marketing site.

    Good luck,
    Scott

What MattyD said. He's right. Been there, tried it. Mods are vicious.
