I need advice... QUICK!!!

ok....

yesterday the business partner of the first meeting I had called me with a ton of "why should I have you build our website?" questions.

I was a little frustrated to have to answer all of these questions again but I kept my cool and had him laughing by the end of the call.

he said that he would talk it over with his partner and call me back today to set everything up...

Here is the problem...

It is almost 4pm and I need money NOW!!! LOL

Is there a way for me to call them and not sound as desperate as I really am...

or should I just bite the bullet and wait even though it might mean having to sell some stuff to come up with money?
( and before anyone says it... YES I AM STILL PICKING UP THE PHONE AND TRYING TO MAKE APPOINTMENTS! It just seems that with memorial day I can't get one setup befor tuesday so this client seems to be the only option that I have right NOW)

I really need some input here...

thanks a bunch guys,

Don

Okay so, you have this client that hasn't called you back yet, but you are desperate for money, I would call and say Hi this is your name, I am calling you back to follow up with your decision. We spoke yesterday, about getting you a website designed for your company. I am looking forward to hearing what your partner had to say. and just go from there.
You no longer have to pitch him your qualifications. If he truly wanted a website, he would have already gotten on board.

it is a local business (upscale hair salon) so I want to make a very sharp looking website that will help them set more appts. they even came up with the idea of doing a short bio with a pic for each of the girls that they have working there...

also I have not done the skype thing yet...

Sometimes opportunities for a quick sale come and go. If I were you, I'd follow up with that guy in a couple of days, but you can't count on him at this point because he's not solid.

I would say that you should take it as a lesson that you need to build urgency in a call. Even if all you do is run a fake promotion and say "Look, Jim, right now we have a promotion for our product. It's $300 off our service, but it ends tomorrow. If you can see the value in our service, and I think you can, you're going to save $300 bucks by getting started today."

    Other helpful lines:

"If it makes sense today, it's going to make sense tomorrow. This is black & white; not much grey area. The only difference will be that you'll be a day older and you'll be spending $300 more for our service."

"Jim, my industry changes every day. Every day there are new competitors, new rules to the trade, and new opportunities. I've found a way to make the internet work for you TODAY. If we don't get started NOW, that opportunity may pass and someone else will reap the rewards thereof."

Just some stuff I've used. Hope it helps.

    $500 a bit much? I think it's too low.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went with the $2,000 designer because of a higher perceived value. It happens all the time.

Don...please come back and let us know how things turn out.

I was just saying a simple website for 500 is over priced, now if you want to provide a website with all the bells and whistles then yeah go ahead and charge 2-3 k,

I would give him (max) 2 days to respond back to you. If he doesn't respond within 2 days, don't bet the farm on this guy. $500 is what i call a "starter sale" - meaning it's a beginner wage. Once you have designs and case studies from clients, charge the full $2000 or $3000 for your services.

Ever consider since it is a Holiday Weekend they may have more pressing needs than the Web Site today.

I would not badger them. If one of the partners took today off, or they are super busy with Hair Styling today a web site is not going to be on thier mind. Just an Opinion you may hear from them next week when things get back to normal.

Sorry you are desperate for money, but it might be a good weekend either to plan for more sales appointments next week. If you are going to build a Homstead site, This might be a good weekend to practice creating one.

      Good Luck !!!

One suggestion...DO NOT call this guy again. You have already put yourself in a bad position by calling him back. When you do this, prospects can sense your neediness, and they will proceed to take you for a ride. Let him call you, and if he doesn't, don't look back. If he calls you back a few weeks down the line, let him know that the pricing has gone up. Tell him you were cutting him a deal because business was a bit slow, but now you've got to try and squeeze him in. Make yourself unavailable, and you can command a higher price.

I agree with truly_gifted. You have to position yourself as a business professional who doesn't really need their business (even if you DO). This not only increases the perceived value of your services, it communicates a position of confidence that will affect your own perceptions of yourself as well as those of the people you come in contact with.

All I can say to this is "Welcome to offline marketing" be prepared for alot of blow offs. Best thing to do is forget it and move on. Build the funnel up, if he calls...GREAT! If not, GREAT!...Because you will have other business by now.

    Here's you're call back.

"Hey John, it's Don Cram here. I wanted to give you a call. I just had a project walk in the door and before I can commit to a deadline for them, I wanted to check in with you.

I know you're ready to go with your site, so I don't want to bump you off of our production schedule without talking to you first.

Based on what we've been discussing, I can have your site ready for you by Friday June 3rd if I get it on the schedule today.

Can I send over the work order for you to sign? I'll be in the area this afternoon. I can stop by and take care of everything with you then.

    Thanks!"

    Just do something like that...

Also, I think you did call back too soon... but, if you can afford to let it go, then leave it for a week or week and a half and call back then.

This way it doesn't show that you're so 'urgent' about it, but at the same time enforces that you are keeping tab on them and obviously have some interest in getting this work done for them. So instead of it perhaps turning into a lost sale, you might get it... just a little later than expected!

Not all leads come through, so I try my best not to rely on them, you should never sound desperate, its important to pretend to be very busy.

i.e Phone them and say that you have a busy schedule ahead, and if they need work, you need to get started, then ask for a deposit.

Correct... the answer to not "sounding" desperate, is to not "Be" desperate... The answer to that is to keep your pipeline stuffed and you wont be.

  • Excellent man, really pleased for you.

Have to agree with a couple of the posts on here though that $500 seems a little low. If its a high-end hair salon they will make that back in about 3 clients.

I once lost a client for pitching too low.... won't make that mistake again!
