Marketing kiddies' dance music event

Ok this is a kinda weird first post... hope this is the sort of thing that's allowed in this forum.

Basically I'm starting a dance music clubbing event for babies and toddlers in London.

I have a 2 year old daugher, and one thing I've noticed is that she loves dance music. Nobody's taught her to dance - but the minute a music video comes on TV she grooves around like a pro!

I'm thinking a clubbing event, held in the daytime in a proper nightclub would be popular. When you're a parent, finding things to do with young children isn't easy.

Kids have fun, and parents get to meet other parents.

I kind of had this idea last year and made a website - Funkibugs dot com. I put up a few posters in my kid's nursery, and sold 3 tickets. But then I chickened out that nobody else would buy tickets, and refunded people's money.

Anyway, now I've decided to shut up and just go for it - so I wanted to start a thread, to keep you informed of the progress.

I'm going to apply internet marketing strategies to this - for example, video squeeze pages to build a list, auto-responder marketing funnels to build anticipation, and scarcity tactics to sell tickets. It'll be interesting to see how they fare in the 'real world'.

Here's some reasons I think this is a viable business:
  • Clubbing event for children is unusual and unique
  • Parents know other parents, so a dance music event has the potential to go 'viral'
  • I'm thinking of selling tickets for £11. If I can sell 300 tickets that's £3,300. Subtract venue costs of maybe £800 and that leaves £2,500.
  • If I can run it once, I can make it a regular thing and scale up to different cities.
  • Potential to build a valuable list of parents, so I can market other stuff to them.

Anyway, if you find it interesting, stay tuned and I'll update you on progress. Please, I'd love for you to jump in with any questions or observations.

I think the idea is out of the box, and do-able.

Not sure how well the whole internet promotions will go for it. I somehow imagine offline flyers etc might be better, but who am I to say.

I think the price is a little low also...

I would hold the event in the after noon or late after noon, not at a time where people are 'actually' going out clubbing etc. (You probably thought this anyway, just saying!)

      Thanks krzysiek,

I was thinking of offline flyers, but the call to action is to get parents to visit a video squeeze page that explains about the event and gets them to opt-in for early bird tickets.

Then they receive more videos with venue tours, extra information, etc, each one selling tickets.

(One danger with approaching this from an IM perspective is that I overthink everything! Perhaps there's no need for follow-up sequences etc :-) but we'll see)

Thanks for the advice on the time. I was thinking of during the daytime :-) but also because clubs are empty during that time, so they can hopefully hire the place for a lower cost.

The price would be per ticket - obviously kids can't come alone so their parents need one too.

Ok, I wonder what you think of the flyer I made.

I put an SMS call to action on there, since this is designed to be left in play parks, streetlights, bus shelters, that kind of thing. I didn't think anybody would remember the web address when they're 'out and about'.

Will be putting these up next week - will let you know what response I get.

(Probably the most interesting thing about this whole exercice is that at this time I still haven't figured out how I'm going to put on this event, or even where I'm going to hold it. But if I get a good response, I'll work all that out! )

Man that flyer is impressive. Would take me months to come up with something like that. (Thats why i outsource this part of my business ).

Do you do any graphics designing on the side? I would be interested in knowing.

Ok, I went ahead and ordered 1,000 flyers. Here's the final versions. I'm going to send some to local nurseries, with a nice letter asking them to display them. I'll also laminate some, and fix to street furniture etc. I'll also hand them out to people I see with kids

            Here's the final versions...

Its an intesesting idea!...I would do some brainstorming about who you might be able to joint venture with...who would ALREADY serve this market of mom's with very young kids?
Who already has a list of students, members, etc.?

Other promotion methods are fine, but take more time to ramp up. If you could find an interested partner, and offered an attractive profit split, you might get traction faster. Also, legitimate publicity would carry more weight too.

  • AWESOME!! When you move your project to New York, my daughter and I are in. I would love to do this.

Now that I think about it, they have something like this in New York, but it is more of a show/dance party, not the same thing at all.

Thanks Bruce. I like this idea - there are some local children's stores that sell shoes and clothes. Maybe I can leave some flyers there. Also, there are 'Twitter mums' in London - perhaps I'll approach them.

Thanks Daniel. The logo is actually from 99Designs. I just picked one from the logo store, and had it customised for $99.

I'm not really a designer, so thanks for your compliment. The flyer I created in Pages on the Mac. I find that if you pick a nice clean font like Myriad, and use big type, it's hard to make something that looks bad

    Hey folks,

I just wanted to update you on this.

I built a website with a video squeeze page: FunkiBugs - clubbing for kids! Enter your email for priority ticket info

The idea of the squeeze page is that parents are busy,so they'll probably put off buying tickets if I had a 'regular' website. But if I can get their email address, I can do a launch-style campaign when tickets go on sale.

I got some FunkiBugs flyers printed and I've started handing them out to mums I see with young kids :-)

So far, it seems about 25% of people I give a flyer to visit the website and opt-in.

I was a bit nervous about approaching people in the street, but so far it's really positive - everybody likes the idea and is happy to take a flyer.

Anyway check out the video squeeze and let me know what you think: FunkiBugs - clubbing for kids! Enter your email for priority ticket info :-)
