A smart local businesses (tell your businesses to do this)

Last week my mom got a virus on her computer.

She asked me to fix it but I was slammed with work so she took it to a local repair shop.

$70 later all was well.

Now here's the cool part.

When she got the computer back there were 3 shortcuts saved on the desktop - each to Google Places, Yahoo Local, and one other I forgot.

When you clicked on them they took you to the Computer stores local listing and asked you to rate them.

Pretty smart way to make it super easy for customers to review your local business.

like it, local restaurants I work with we get them to 'sit with' the customers while they go onto their mobiles and leave feedback as and when possible and some offer prizes (free /reduced sitting subject to 3 others eating with you etc) for the more innovatively worded feedback each month

very cool .. I like the "sit with" approach...can be used with a variety of different companies
      that we all service.

I don't like it when I am personally solicited to review a business. It feels kind of sleazy. I don't mind the business letting me know they are on a service such as Yelp.

Great idea Tim, I bet you could do something like that with QR codes placed in a conspicuous place like the backside of an exit door in a bar or restaurant for your clients as well. -Pete

I dunno...I like the idea, but I think I'd personally be upset to find a computer store decided to save shortcuts on my computer without asking permission.

I'd actually be more inclined to leave negative feedback to be honest.

Now if they were to take the time to tie leaving feedback WITH some sort of in-store promotion, and then have a computer setup IN the store so that when a customer did return to claim their computer they could have them leave feedback at a designated computer in the store to receive some special extra value.

I like the initiative, but not the messing with my computer...then again I also hate when I install software and it installs extra shortcuts etc. without asking as well.

    Could just be me

If they had them leave feedback at a designated computer in the store would all the reviews be from the same IP? Just a thought. Overall I agree with you that making a little sneaky desktop icon like that might flat out upset or annoy people.

I think the best way to approach this thing is to tell the business owners to flat out ask their loyal customers to leave them reviews. A loyal customer usually is telling all their friends to go there anyways so it's highly likely that they will go home and review it.

I've also been dropping them little tips about how to get people to check in more often and they seem to really appreciate that.

Not just you... I'd be kind of leery of that as well.

I agree totally. The only exception would be a link to a coupon or promotion and even then I get po'd with putting stuff on without permission. After all someone (el-creepo scumbag) put a virus on in the first place, without my permission.

The reason that the repair store doesn't have the customer leave feedback on an in-store computer is as Neil M just mentioned, the fact that all of the feedback would be listed as coming from the same IP address and any social media management program or group that overlooks the feedback will filter out any multiple comments as a spam attempt to either raise or lower that businesses feedback ranking and will automatically remove all comments from that IP address whether good or bad comments.

The reason the feedback ratings are there in the first place is to help give a perspective word-of-mouth to potential customers of an establishment so they can have an informed choice before they buy from them. This is all part of Google Places design concept from the beginning to help people choose who to do business with and to have every business in the world listed in google places.
