Ranking on Google Places

I have been doing a lot of research on local businesses in my area and was getting ready to do some cold calling to talk to the business owners about their websites or lack of. I know a big selling point is being able to rank them on page one with local Google Places. I was looking for some pointers for doing this as I have never attempted this and don't want to drop the ball when I get the opportunity to help out someones business. Any help would be appreciated.

You can see the ranking factors as agreed by many of the most renown experts in the field here:

Local Search Ranking Factors | Local SEO Best Practices for Google, Bing, Yahoo

Although this list is rather old (almost a year old already), I'd say it's generally still valid, with one major change - the website factor is much more important currently, especially in the so-called O-pack or the merged results where website and listing are merged together. So you can start from here.

Both of the resources mentioned above are very good. I would highly recommend them. Just make sure you do some solid research with keywords. You want keywords that will generate the local algo so the place pages show up with organic listings. Business citations and reviews are two of the more prominent ways to increase rankings. A citation is merely a mention of the business and is better if it includes name, address, and phone or NAP. Good Luck.

I agree with all of the other posts.

Make the Listing optimized, with tons of good, high PR Citations, link to a well optimized website that has received a lot of good high PR backlinks and you'll be on your way to making some business owners happy!

    Hope that helps.

      Hi Jeatom,

Another tip to remember is to name your pictures and videos with your keywords. This helps generate traffic when you're using photo sites to host your images.

I noticed some "Place Pages" that are not claimed by the owner are ranked higher than Places that are owner verified. How does that work?

Many specialists state that claiming the Place page is one of the most important ranking factors (some say it's the most important one). In my opinion, claiming has mediocre importance and much more valuable factors would be the online presence of the business (i.e. how "popular" it is online, which is measured in number of citations) and website factors. That's why you could often times see unclaimed Place pages rank very high, even for extremely competitive keywords. If a Place was created automatically by Google it means that Google found some trustworthy information out there and it puts so much of credit on it that it even creates a Place.
