Help ! How To Access A Clients Site Using FrontPage

Hi,

I have a new client (yay!) who uses MS Front Page for his site. What steps does he have to take to allow me access and what do I have to do at my end (I have FP installed). Sorry - new to FP and I have googled it but can´t find the answer.

Anyone have any FP clients that could help me ?.

Really appreciate an answer

Thanks

Si

He uses Front page to edit his site/files.
He should send you his website files so you can edit them on your own PC or just give you the ftp details so you can download the website from their company.com site.
Or you could edit them directly on their PC, which i don't recommend, using TeamViewer

Since he already uses FP for his website, then accessing it is very easy. If he wasn't using FP and you wanted to use FP then there would've been one more step so it's good that he's already using FP.

        What you need is ...
        • URL
        • Username
        • Password
In FP 2003 (what I use) go to FILE/OPEN SITE.

Put the URL in the Site Name field. Include the http://

It'll then ask for the username and password.

If you don't get the Username & password box and get some other message, then that tells me he hasn't installed the FrontPage Extensions to his website from his cPanel. To use FP you have to do this, which, as I mentioned in the first para he probably already did (this is the step you skipped since he's already using FP).

From here you can make the changes. Just be aware that you're doing it real-time meaning any changes you make will be immediately reflected when people go to the site since you're doing it from the URL.

Of course, you can also then copy all of the files to your computer to work on and then publish them if you want. However, for newbie's to FP, they find it easier to just do the few things they need to do from the URL.

To make sure he doesn't over write your work the next time he wants to use FP to make changes, ask him if his FP files are on his computer and then he "publishes" the changes or if he works from the URL. I'm betting they are on his harddrive.

If that's the case, tell him to click the button on the bottom toolbar called "Remote Web Site". Then, under Publish All Changed Pages have him select Remote to Local. That will take your changes which you did online at his URL and update his local files.

After he's done, he can go back to which ever choice he had selected. You just want to make sure that your changes are updated on his local computer so they aren't over written.

        This should get you going.

Now, there are people who use FP but don't know how to do the "publish" step in it, or because their hosting company doesn't have the ability to install the FP Extensions they can't do it. These people will then use a FTP client to update their pages. The key here is to know whether the FP Extensions have been installed.

Also, with FP Extensions, if you use a FTP client for the site it will blow out the extensions so after using a FTP client you have to go back into the cPanel and re-install the FP extensions.

I probably gave you more information than you needed. Hope it all helps.
