Woo-hoo! Got my first offline client with no face-to-face meeting and no cold-calling...

Hi fellow Warriors,

I have some great news here and I wanted to share it with you. Some of you might know that I had been struggling to get my first offline client for the last couple of weeks. Just yesterday I talked about that on this thread.

Finally, today I closed my first offline deal with only email and I am feeling so great about that. I knew it would work because I had promised myself not to stop until I get that first client. And I guess that I passed the most difficult challenge in the offline arena.

Here is all the details:

About two months ago, I had absolutely no interest or intention to do anything related to the offline part of internet marketing. I was making money with various online methods like CPA, AdSense, Amazon etc. and I was thinking I would never get involved in the offline world...

...until a friend of mine mentioned about mobile. Honestly, I had no idea about what was going on in the mobile world till that time. Then I came to WF looking for all the threads about mobile. Soon I found this thread which was talking about selling mobile friendly websites to local businesses. After going over a few pages, I realized that this was something I would really like to do: designing and selling mobile friendly websites.

Although I was not a designer type of guy, I decided to give it a try since I was so excited about designing mobile friendly sites and I believed that this is something almost all businesses will need. In the next weeks I searched and consumed all the available information on this forum and on the internet about mobile web design. I learned a lot in a short time and created my first sample mobile sites and finally a free mobile site to a hotel in my country.

Meanwhile I started to contact business owners via email to offer mobile friendly websites. I targeted businesses in other countries because in my city, business owners wouldn't be interested in mobile sites at this time therefore face-to-face meetings wouldn't work for me. Also, cold-calling is not my type that's why I went with email.

Since I was new to offline world and email marketing, it took hundreds of emails for me to fine tune my email campaign and finally get some positive response. I started with hard sales pitches and from the responses I got, I noticed that the way my emails sounded perfect to me was not a perfect read for the business owners. And I modified my email every time I got a response in order to improve it. Additionally, I prepared a six-page report about the benefits of mobile friendly websites to educate interested business owners.

I came back to WF to find some email marketing advice and blended all the advice I could get, to create my unique email. Honestly, there are more than enough free advice on this forum that I didn't have to buy a WSO. There are a lot of warriors that give great advice about how to compose a well performing email on different threads and I followed their advice.

Two days ago, I created the 8th version of my email which has been perfected in the previous versions and I started to send that one to businesses. And yesterday I started talking with an interested business owner from another country which I was able to close the deal on my third email today. And now, I will do my best to make my first offline client the happiest offline client ever

So, what did I have in the opening email?

It is the first email that will determine success or failure in email marketing and if you can get the desired response in the first email than you will have a good chance of converting that person into a client. And my desired response was to get their attention in a positive manner so that when I send them my second email, the main one, they will read it and reply even if they are not interested.

I will not give the exact copy of my emails because I really don't want another person to use my exact words to contact business owners, and maybe to the ones that I already contacted, because this will reduce my and that person's credibility to 0 instantly. Though I will give some ideas about them.

Just before that, here are a couple of things that I learned about emails on WF.
  • Do not expect a high response rate as you will never get it whatever you say in your email.
  • Never let your first email smell like as if it is coming from a marketer.
  • Don't try to sell them anything at the first contact, try to take them into a conversation.
  • Offer something valuable to them for free to build instant credibility. An SEO analysis, a video, a report, a free backlink, etc.
  • Follow can-spam act rules.

In the first/opening email I asked a question about their business. A really simple question and this can be varied in dozens of ways like:

"which cities do you serve?",
"do you offer this and that as well?",
"are you open on Sundays",
"I heard that you have a great ..., is this correct?",
"can you help me better understand this about your product/service?",
"do you offer coupons/discounts?",
...

No lies, no tricks; just simple questions. Such an email will certainly get some positive response from business owners who check their emails and this is actually what we want.

Then, in my second email, after getting their positive response I kindly mentioned that their website didn't have a mobile friendly version and not mentioning that I can design a mobile site for them, I simply added my six-page report which talks about the latest mobile trends/statistics and the benefits of mobile sites with a closing paragraph mentioning that I could help them.

And that's how I got my first offline client without any face-to-face meeting or cold-calling. I believe my system still needs improvements and I will be modifying it as I keep getting responses. But that first client proved me one thing:

You can get offline clients by email only. It just takes a lot of effort and fine-tuning.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Now, I have a client waiting for me to serve, thanks for reading.

Nail

Nail is perfect proof of what happens when you stick your head down and remain persistent. There are plenty of times he could have given up (most people would have), I know he has been working at this for a while, but now he knows this is possible and I have no doubt he will get many more clients to follow.

The first client is always the hardest.

Joetann, I will try to summarize it in one sentence:

Apart from all the technical and visual benefits, which the business owner doesn't really care about, a mobile friendly website provides a much better user experience to their mobile visitors. Happy visitors > happy customers > more profit for the business owner. You can find more info about benefits etc. on this huge mobile design thread.

Email marketing works. If done correctly it's not hard at all. I never call a potential client, they have to respond to my email first.

Last month I landed three offline clients that will bring in over $15,000 in annualized fees. Most people are clueless about how powerful email marketing really is. Congrats.

    Nice work Nail!

I sent out 15 jing videos and only got one response, "no thank you"

I sent out 50 emails last week letting them know they did not have a mobile friendly site and I had a report for them. I gt a callback yesterday and I am meeting with the guy tomorrow as he is interested in Google Places and SEO. This is the first time I have tried email and I'll take a response rate of 1/65.

Just keep after it and ask for referrals.

It all depends on what you have to offer and how you differ from others, there are a lot of warriors here who make a very nice income from offline clients. And I am on my way to it.

If you are talking about a report for mobile web, then just Google "mobile web stats" and it will give you a lot of good resources. Here are some of them:

      http://mobithinking.com/mobile-marke...t-mobile-stats
      http://mashable.com/2010/04/13/mobile-web-stats/
      http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_br...-201005-201105

Outsourcing sending emails is a good idea and I will consider it.

Have you tried showing business owners how their website looks on a mobile phone through video?, this can be quickly be achieved using an online iphone emulator / simulator and jing. ( both free )

For some reason though, I cannot get jing to record audio, camtasia is OK ?

If you first record the business website through jing, this is the image business owners will receive when you send them the video,

        regards

It doesn't surprise me at all that the UK was the worst response rate. Particularly where local business and mobile is concerned we seem a long way behind other countries in our attitude. I think email marketing is also very difficult over here, which makes your achievement even better! Well done.

Thanks Phil. Actually, I didn't try sending a comparison video yet and I don't think I will try it. I sent images that compared their site and a nice-looking mobile site but I got no response from that. And I stopped it because creating an image or a video for each potential client requires a lot of time and in my own experience it didn't make much difference. That's why I prepared a general short report that I could send all the businesses.

It varied but from 0 to 100 a day in a couple of weeks. About 700-800 in total, I really didn't count them. Only the last 50 emails or so were the improved version. In the process, I got about 10 really interested business owners that we talked about pricing and details and I didn't hear from them again although I followed up once more. As I mentioned in my opening post, I learned something from every response I got and I believe it will be easier for me from now on.

Hi Luis, I can't give a specific figure but my price range is $150-$400 depending on the amount of work needed on my side. I am improving my design and coding skills in order to get larger projects and I believe one could easily ask for 4 figures for such projects.

I think the thing that distinguishes you here and is the reason behind your success is that you didn't just try one thing, then fail and forget about it,..you kept refining the process until you saw better results and then capitalized on that.

Well, in my opinion mobile sites are just beginning. It is true that newer smartphones show regular websites, but the point is how nice and fast they show it and how functional and user-friendly the site is on a mobile device.

Some visitors might prefer to see the full version even if they have great difficulty finding what you are looking for, and some business owners might prefer not to have a mobile site since they don't give a sh.t about how their site performs on a mobile device. But if I know one thing, it is that we will see a lot more mobile sites around from now on.

...until a friend of mine mentioned about mobile.

    Nail

This thread is awesome because there are alot of people who arent the telemarketing TYPE, but it also confirms a truth to me as in "It took two months to get your first client".... Im not the TYPE that can wait that long for business to come to me... I would rather cold call and get 3 or 4 clients my first WEEk...

I will say this much, if anyone ever comes out with an emailing system that will produce reliably and consistently deliver a sale a day... then I will denounce cold calling for the rest of my life, because it isnt as easy as emailing... Looks like you may be that guy with this kind of persistance!!! And you "can" be that guy, who paves a way for all of us!

Not thread jacking here... This is a great thread for those who desire to learn emailing for offline business..., just confirming what I have found to be a truth yet again.

    Good stuff.

    Congrats on your success!

John, I absolutely hate cold calling. Please call me a whiner, I deserve it. (serious)

I worked as a salesman for about a year, total, probably.

I sucked at it. Big time.

I sold time shares. I worked hard at learning all the sales techniques, I was learning from a guy who was crazy successful and he made it his goal to make me a true salesmen. It didnt' work.

I've sold insurance, and I've sold door-to-door for Dish.

All of it I hated. All of it I dreaded getting up and going to work.

I just am one of those people who hates selling in person. That's just me. I just can't stomach it.

I've also worked in telemarketing, as I mentioned, for at least a month. It was absolutely the worst job I've ever had, and I never hated a job more. Especially one place I worked. They were horrible and treated everyone like children (as in, hey everyone you can get a candy bar if you do good!). Horrible place to work, really. Incredibly impersonal.

Anyway, sorry to hijack this thread, Nail!

But John, I am convinced my lot will be to partner with someone who can cold call and doesn't give a rip about figuring out all the stuff I am offering. Someone who just wants to sell.

Interested in your thoughts on this.

John I don't want you to stop cold calling forever because that is what you do BUT I email ONLY and it took me 4 days to get my first client, not 2 months. Now I don't know if the original OP consistently did this for 2 months or what, but I promise you it was only 4 days. I could have picked up the phone and cold called for 4 hours and got a client, but I've done telemarketing in the *real world* and absolutely hate it. I know for a fact that it works because I was successful at it while hating it lol but I don't want others reading this thread to think it takes that long when email marketing..it's about knowing what to send and also *cheating* the system sometimes and by that I mean not manually finding the emails yourself, that alone could take up a whole day of your time literally..you can outsource that and take up someone elses time, but if you don't believe me you can go to the *private practice* wso section and see where I clearly stated a few months back that I got my first client in 4 days, so no bs here I just don't want someone to listen to only one method (cold calling, direct mail, or anything else) and think they have to do it that way and be successful. If I would have listened to others, I would probably just be reading the WF instead of working on my business and making money. But I will say this..I am actively looking for a telemarketer because I know it's money to be made in that area Anyway, you have to find out what works for you and DO THAT!!

SIDENOTE: I am thinking about doing a case study of my next email marketing campaign and turning it into a wso (one day..I'm not that interested in WSO selling right now) and not for profit but because A LOT of people seem to think it's super hard to get a client through email, but I'm guessing these people are manually trying to get the emails theirself therefore they get frustrated with how time consuming it is and then give up and I also think another reason could be their email is a blatant advertisement and they give the business owners a chance to realize they're trying to *sell* them something and giving them a chance to say no before they even call. But that will be in the future and no I will not give out the body of my email I made the mistake of giving a VERY ungrateful person my EXACT callback script (the prospects call and leave me a voicemail throught the # provided in the email) and will never give anyone my exact words again..sorry for anyone that was going to ask if I would share my email..there's your answer..yes, one person blew it for everybody

Dont worry, there are entire paragraphs and quotes straight out of my reports and posts... floating around in about 10 WSO's around here... There's nothing you can do, but as I learned from Paul Myers, in the process of reading his book "The Idea Spot"... You cant let the bad expereinces Jade you.

Its easy to conentrate on the 2% of bad characters out there and forget that 98% are inherently good.

If we get caught in the trap we can start viewing it the other way around and treating everyone we come in contact with as if they are the 2% which is bad... Then what happens?

Suddenly that reality starts forming around us and we can no longer succeed because we are attracting skeptics instead of optimists. In most cases we literally "invent" them, as he says.

Becoming overly cynical is not good, nor positive... Many people start to succeed by cynicism because the attract cynics looking for place to agree... Where are the success stories though? Complaining about how everyone else isnt qualified doesnt produce success stories. Uplifting and encouraging the human spirit does.

Nothing good comes from cynicism in the long run... America (as an example) was built by people who believed that anyone "could" succeed, even though there were bigger cynical organizations scoffing them the whole way.

Dont become Jaded , dont start believing the bad in people. Its not good. Yeah, that was one bad apple. I understand. There are cicumstances when you should avoid feeding them...but in general, dont let it kill your positive attitude. Dont let them make you afraid to put your ideas into circulation and succeed.

Paul is a wise soul. He has a position like solomon, where has looked over the young and the old and the simple and the wise... he has witnessed every possible situation that could occur on the warrior forum , or among marketers 100 times... I advise anyone to read everyword he says!

I need to get this book, but not to high jack this thread, I just don't like when some people say things like *cold calling sucks and doesn't work* just because it didn't work for THEM when clearly there are many people on the WF alone using cold calling and making money with it, but again, you should try things for yourself (the correct way) and run with it if it works, or move on..but I'm glad for this thread as it is something that I'm using and it shows people that it does work

I also got Joe's Private Practice WSO and I'm getting started with it. While the WSO does lay out a way to find prospects, I'm finding it quite time consuming. While I am inspired in seeing you that you got your first client in four days, how many emails did you send out? How many potential clients did you interact with before you signed one up?

Definately we want to be carefeul not to throw this thread off topic, but to briefly answer your question - I agree, that an excellent solution is partnering up with someone to sell for you. You know what? Att? The owner? He would never pick up a phone and cold call... he is more interested in creating cutting edge solutions - He has other people do the other parts that are needed - Including sales and cold calling.

Nothing wrong with not wanting to cold call for yourself - As long as someone else is.

    Hey Nail

    YOU ARE THE MAN.

Congratulations on your success of landing your first client. You can only get better after that. Remember, as someone already said, once they're happy - ask them for referrals. There is nothing greater than a word of mouth referral.

Congratulations on being an inspiration to the many others that are starting out in this field.

    To add my own experience:

I use reports as well. I have tried a combination of email (but that was through the businesses contact form on their website vs a person specific email), I have tried cold-calling, and also face to face conversations with the places I already frequent. It's just a numbers game and I have to get my magic #.

    Again, thank you.

Congrats first off for not being afraid to jump into new territory by targeting mobile-friendly sites. & thanks for sharing those tips. I hate cold calling too. Most people get turned off by a straight up sales pitch so you were wise to step back & look at your emails from the customer's perspective and tweak it so that it engaged them rather than being a straight up hard pitch.
