Local business wants to rank on Google Places 7 box or Top 3 organic search ranking

Hi there,

I'm offering SEO service for local business in my area.
I'm wondering if local business wants to get their websites ranked on Google Places 7 box or organic search ranking (Top 3) below Google Places.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I dont really understand your question, but if you have doubts about what service they want, why dont you ask them what they want?

Local business doesn't know much about SEO, Google Places or Organic ranking. If you ask them they have no idea what you are talking about. All they need is more telephone rings to their businesses. My question is; between Google Places 7 box and Top 3 organic ranking below Google Places which one will get more clients to them.

      Thanks,

I have found that most of my clients prefer top 3 Google listing, not Google Places. I currently have about 90% of my clients wanting pure organic results and really have no worry for GP. They get enough "phone rings" with just a 1, 2, or 3 spot and are happy enough. However, if you can sell them both, its a sure thing. To answer your question of "which is better", I dont think there is a definitive answer to this. Nothing measurable anyway.

I think the word "below" answers your question. It's somehow asking if a website that ranks on position 2 will get higher CTR than a site ranking on position 8 (which would be the actual position of the first ranking website in the case that you cited). Well, of course it depends on many factors, but generally speaking, I don't think any business owner would be more happy to rank eighth than second.

        There are actually 2 scenarios:

        1) When there is "pure search", or the old-school 7-pack. Then definitely the visibility of the websites under the pack would be higher + the CTR for all the 7 listings in the pack would be more equal, because all of them would be immediately visible. However, still the 7-pack would be displayed over the website results

        2) When there is "blended search", or the so-called O-pack. Then you have a website and a listing merged, and here the rules of the organic rankings CTR.

Overall, maybe you'd be interested in this article:

There really should not be any choice....they need both google places & organic search optimization....for the simple reason that not all targeted keywords or search terms generate a 7-box or any google places box at all...

For example...here in Arizona heating - cooling (hvac) contractors will target "air conditioning repair" & "swamp cooler repair"......"air conditioning repair tucson" generates a google places 7-box....while "swamp cooler repair tucson" has only organic search results...no 7-box.

Make sure your clients know this.....that not all keywords will generate google place local search results.....most will understand why both need to be optimized.

    Good luck,

Before spending the effort to do SEO on unproven keywords, I suggest running an Adwords campaign. That is a sure way to find out which keywords gets the volume and the clicks.

The external Google keyword tool is okay as a first past, but it is not very accurate. In addition, it leaves out many keywords that are in Google's database. When you run an Adwords campaign, you will get access to many more keywords.

After the campaign, you'll see which keywords to optimize for.

    Good luck.

I think they want customers... Figure out what gets them customers and you can sell it.
