Google Places & Citations Question

My client is currently ranking Page 6 on Google Places for the term "Fresno Dentist" they also have 61 reviews. When I began a few weeks ago their GP name was "(Name)DDS and (2nd Name) DDS Fresno Dental Group". So I entered their citations as such. But now they went back and dropped the Fresno Dental Group on their GP listing. Will that effect their GP rankings, because their citations are a little different? What can I do to rectify this?

So, I asked my clients to change it back. And I was told they never changed it. So I got their GP information login and noticed nothing has been changed. So is this where Google changed the name because thats how its being found on the internet?

This is part of the issue with citations and Google Places. There is a lot of research that needs to be done up front for the client and if they have changed their business address or name in the past 5-10 years, then all of the citations need to be fixed before claiming the page.
Most times this is not a perfect scenario, so it will simply take more time to get the citations corrected as the client usually wants to see their places page as quick as possible.

My suggestion is to Nail down the exact NAP and then dig into their citations listings making sure they are correct.

    Hope this helps.

I love this response. It's so true. We do a complete local search audit for a new prospect before we touch their GP etc. Our pricing quotes are custom r/t any problems we find, the geography, demographics and keyword research. So many business owners have multiple listings, incorrect listings, bad citations, etc. Also, use ExpressUpdate Gets Your Business Listed in all Major Search Engines, In-Car Navigation and Mobile Devices - post the correct citation, and then move forward from there. Great thread!

I could not agree more! Doing prior research is very important. I am dealing with a business owner who has citations/business listings all over the net with different addresses and phone numbers.

Another thing you have to watch if the business has moved more then once is multiple Google Places listings.

Google loves to create listings without letting any one know of course so in effect Google' own practices can end up being counter productive to a small business and its online marketing efforts.

The advice here is good. Just take care of all the core general citation websites that you can, and then look for some hyperlocal/hyperniche directories that you can add their business to. Doing this should put you at the top of the majority of your competition for local searches. You will need to give it a few months to see complete results though IMO.

If you want a good list of general citation websites that you can submit to, check out Local Lasso and click on the spreadsheet image top right. We need to re-upload our new master submission list, but the current one on there should get you around 130 solid citation listings at the very least. Then look into some of the hyperlocal/hyperniche directories. Often times the hyperlocal directories are ran by your local media/tv/newspaper companies.

I'd suggest just starting clean and entering all new information (that you now KNOW will not change) on the citation websites. Don't be surprised if some of them have scraped REALLY old information and/or have additional business listings with the wrong/old biz info.

Once you've eventually got some live listing URLs (meaning the business listing url on the citation websites goes LIVE), build some backlinks to the actual citation websites themselves, not just the actual company website.

Between building links to the listing URLs and pinging them upon completing your profile/adding new reviews/info/etc, these should get the NEW and FINAL NAP information some attention by the googlebots. With enough quality and quantity involving the correct NAP info that you desire, we've been seeing positive results in this regard.

    Hope that helps!

I second Jim's answer. You need to find citation sites in the same location as the client. Building citations based on the category keywords and optimizing the video and images with the same keyword phrases will help you get to your goal.

        Hi
I checked your places listing and it says "DDS Dental Group" at the end, it appears the Fresno has been dropped. Maybe the places listing has merged with the website which has the exact same title, try putting the "Fresno" in the website title.

@ asnorth... Thanks for the suggestion. I'm thinking that was the problem. I went ahead and made those corrections.

Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it. Now hopefully I can get their GP to the top spot.
