How Are You Doing Mobile Websites?

Lots of discussion here on mobile websites and not a lot of freely available info for some of the beginners. Alot of the questions I see asked on various sites is "where" are you building them? Is it on a separate domain? ie. a xxxx.mobi? or is it mobile subdomain on an existing site with a script to identify the device and browser? Which do you find easier?

    If your site build on WordPress platform - it's easy. there are few plugins like WPtouch that you only need to install and your site is mobile optimized.

    Scott,

    If you want to charge for hosting i recommend using an .mobi domain.

    I always recommend people to use the m.TheCompany.com subdomain for hosting the mobile websites on the client's server. Although some of the them chose /mobile directory to host their site, it's they choice after all.I won charge for hosting if you'd ask me.

    Quentin's script it's the best way to get started and the easiest i found to build mobile websites that works.

    I want a couple of my sites to go mobile and I was thinking about the WPtouch plugin but I am scared stiff that it will break my site and I will not be able to rectify it. Has anyone had any experience with it?

    WP Touch is a great plugin for wordpress and it should not break your site.

    If however your site has a lot of formatting no plugin will make it look good on a mobile so you would need to customize one for your site.

    Just try it as you can then delete it if it doesn't work.

      I just bought the developer's version of this plugin and it is fantastic. I build custom mobile sites for html sites, but for a Wordpress blog, this plugin can't be beat.

        I have tried to free version and it did an okay job. Seems i need to look into the paid version from your post above, as i certainly would want some more features. Does it offer a whole lot more over the basic modifications allowed in the free version?

          I never tried the free version. I'm sure it works, but there's so many more features in the Pro version. Plus, whenever I find a plugin that I really love, I buy the developer's license so I can sell websites with it installed.

    I build mine on subdomains, like m.domain.com. Why buy another domain for the mobile version?

    just like i read in some ebook... i like using the "m.mysite.com" because they way the guy put it is facebook uses " m.facebook.com " so that means its good and best way... plus there is no need to buy another domain

    I spent months searching for the right fit. Most mobile websites do not optimize correctly on 100% of the 15000+ mobile devices. Also when designing a mobile site it must be layed out entirely differently - from the navigation to the content. Mobile users are different then desktop users. They are on the go and looking for specific information - usually phone number or directions. I finally found what I was looking for and offer it to my members on my free mobile marketing forum. Here is a quick demo idea and a link to a demo site I created for pitching clients:

    Gomobi is a great solution for personal mobile websites but a bad decision for business sites.

    Why send gomobi all your traffic and customers when you can have your mobile website on your own domain and get all the credit for it.

    Building custom mobile websites is not that hard and optimizing for the mobile search engine.

    As for all the different types of phones a simple stretch and fit system like all the top mobile sites will fit pretty well any phone so it is not really a big deal. Just a speil by the mobile website template sellers.

    Gomobi is easier but not good for business.

    i use Mobdis - HTML5 Builder for mobile sites and ads - Design & Publish Mobile Ads & Sites in HTML5 within minutes! then redirect a subdomain like http://m.domain.com , right now my mobile site is still in the making though (my domain: Facekitt)
