Finding Offline Clients - What Worked For Me When I Was A Total Newbie

First I would like to say that I am in no stretch of the imagination a Guru in Offline Marketing. I just wanted to share my experience in the hopes that it can help someone...

About 6 months ago I started offering SEO services to a few friends who had websites for their offline businesses, their sites were lingering on page 3 or worse. As I got more into it I found I enjoyed it and the profit margin was pretty nice too. I soon decided I wanted to expand and offer my services to more clients. I did get a couple of referrals which was nice but still wanted more. I tried a few of the regular methods to find new clients…

1. Cold Calling
2. Cold Emailing
3. Ad in the local paper (which did get me one client)
4. Contacting businesses from the Yellow Pages…etc

Now I’m not saying that these won’t work for you because I know there are people who swear by some of these methods, they just didn’t work for me. Fast forward a few months and offline marketing is the latest buzz word (at least in the WSO section). I know it was popular well before then but I only took notice then (was busy doing other things) and I started buying a few of the more popular offline marketing WSOs that had come out. There was some very good info in them (2 in particular) and I won’t go into details about the contents of the WSOs (that’s not why I am writing this) but I will say that I took action and have made some recurring income from them over the last couple of months.

The main idea of the WSOs was a different approach than most would think of or are used to and I may follow through more on them later but it really wasn’t what I wanted to do in offline marketing. I only followed through with them because I hate not taking action, even if it’s something that doesn’t appeal to me 100%. The reason I tell you this is because buying those WSOs and taking action led me to how I started finding offline clients at a much higher success rate than before.

While implementing the approach outlined in the WSOs I decided to find more clients in the niche I chose by searching Google and not paying attention to the first page…I started on the second page. I won’t go into great detail as it would expose some of the info in the WSOs but I will say that the basic principle of what I am trying to explain here is that there are a lot of potential SEO clients starting on the second page of the SERPS.
If an offline business has a website on the second or third page then that’s a good indication that they are at least interested in online marketing, they just may not know how to get their site where it needs to be or the advantages of having their site ranking well…that’s where we come in.

I started emailing them directly and explained how I found their site; I gave them a very brief analysis of their site as well as their competitors and suggested some courses of action to increase their sites ranking based on their sites current on and off page SEO, competition for relevant keywords…etc.

I found as I tweeked my emails to address someone specifically (typically the business owner) that my success rate of setting phone appointments increased dramatically. I am currently working out of the US so setting an in person meeting wouldn’t work for me. I also found that if I took the time to write 2 emails (instead of one) that my success rate increased greatly. The first email was a short email just to introduce myself and my services and the second was a follow up further detailing the things mentioned above about that particular persons site and their competitors.

My results started to level out as I tested and tweeked my emails and the info I was putting in them. Now I have 12 offline clients that I offer a range of services to.

The important part...what worked for me:

2 clients are the friends I mentioned initially
1 came from the local paper ad
1 came from the bottom of page 2 for their main KW
8 came from pages 3 and 4 for their main KW

Only 1 client came from page 2 and he was at the bottom of page 2 when I contacted him.
This approach may be common knowledge for most of you but hopefully there are some who are either very new (like myself) at offline marketing or havent started yet and are interested in it. Maybe this will give you another method for adding to your client list.

One more thing…

Don’t hesitate to contact businesses listed in Google Maps/Places either. The businesses in the lower positions can certainly benefit from your offering to help them increase their rankings there. You can outsource that service here on the WF in the Warriors For Hire section and make as much as 3 or 4 times the cost of the service.

Good luck, I hope you find this helpful!
Robert

Very good info, thanks for sharing.
I use a similar angle while selling my Social Media Services to Businesses. Find the one who have a page with very few friends and followers. Then show them an example of some of my top clients. It's a slam dunk after that....

    Hi Robert,

    Thanks very helpful!
Would you like to share the WSO you talked about, maybe we can learn from that.
Also do you have monthly earnings from those clients or do you prefer to work one project with them?

I'm trying to set up and offline business and fuel myself up with tips and strategies on how to get clients and if I should go for long term clients or not.

    thanks,
    Stefan

Here is one of the WSOs I was talking about...

      http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-special-offers-forum/376248-google-love-method-last-offline-warrior-special-offer-you-will-ever-need-buy-business-box-system-proof.html

All but one are recurring monthly clients. The one that isn't might as well be because he contacts me about once a month to do certain things for him and twice it has cost him more than he would have paid me had he agreed to a monthly service.

There is so much info here on the forum...just dig for it and read, read read...then read some more.

As far as goign for long term clients is concerned, I personally feel thats the only way to go but it really is an individual choice.

      Best of luck!

I’ve received a couple of PMs asking me about the emails I sent to perspective clients so I thought I would post them here. I should have posted them initially...sorry about that.

Please keep in mind that you will probably want to edit them to match your style of writing so further communications don’t seem strange to them.

Email 1 - Basic introduction email:

        Hello [Business Owners Name],

My name is [Your Name]; I offer Search Engine Optimization (SEO) services to local businesses just like yours. Companies that already have a foothold online but need help improving their sites rankings in the search engines.

Your site is currently ranked [current rank of their site] in Google as I write this for what I believe is the main keyword or phrase that potential customers will use to find your business online ([enter KW here]). Although your site might generate some potential customers for your business it could bring you much more if it were properly optimized.

I’ve researched your website, industry and your competitors and have compiled an SEO analysis of your site that includes a results oriented plan of attack to get your site ranking better in Google. If you’re interested in seeing it or just want to know more about the benefits of ranking higher in the search engines please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.

        [Your Name]
        [Your Company Name]

Email 2 – Follow up email:

        [Business Owners Name],

I contacted you recently about your websites current ranking in Google. I know how easy it is to get side tracked with the day to day business of doing business and wanted to touch base with you again.

As I said in my first email, I did some research and put together a customized analysis of your website, its rankings and your competitor’s sites as well. I also included what I think is a very solid approach to raise your sites rankings in Google which could have a very dramatic affect on your businesses bottom line.

When you get right down to it, business exposure, getting new customers and making more money is what it’s all about…right?

Online exposure of your business really doesn’t start until your website is on the first page of Google and to be quite honest, the higher the rank the better!

I hope to have the opportunity to show you what I can do for your business and its websites rankings.

I look forward to hearing from you,

        [Your Name]
        [Your Company Name]

You may want to add your phone number as well. As I said, I didn’t add mine due to my situation but if you’re local to the businesses you target then there is no reason not to add it. Offering more contact options and making things easier for the potential client is HUGE!

I hope these templates help…make changes to fit your style, test them…then make more changes if you have to and test them again, most importantly…take action!

Thanks for the thread... pretty good idea. I've been thinking about getting into the offline game over the past couple of weeks. Let me ask -- is the WSO that you linked to the better of the two that you mentioned in your first post?

I believe it is. It gave a few more tips and to be honest I preferred that approach (although very similar to the other) because of some of the specifics about website setup that the other one didn't offer or recommend.

    Hi Robert, Great post.

Good starting point for attracting clients for newbies or offline starters.

The market for our services is just so big, sometimes I´m wondering.

Why is everyone attacking on the US, UK or AUS market. Think broader,

Instead of US - think Canada, Mexico, South America
Instead of UK - think Germany, Spain, Italy
Instead of AUS - think New Zealand, Asia, South Africa.

This is targeting clients outside the normal box thinking. Instead of going convient, go advantures and take on some clients from the growth economies.... Currently, im working on a clientsbase in South Africa....

    Good luck,

    LASSE

Thats a very good point Lasse!

I stuck with local businesses because I know the area and like to be able to tell them I am local myself. I also have a full time job and other IM activities so I didnt really want to expand that much (meaning tons of clients) but I could certainly see that as a possibility.

    Robert,
Thanks for sharing. In my experience, it depended upon wheter you were looking for customers or clients in business or residential. I had a offline business (2 different) that dealt with each. Two different 'animals' with two different approaches. However, your info is very helpful.

Great post Robert! This method has been working for years. I have my sales team do this during their downtime when the phones aren't ringing.

It's still a viable method to bring in clients.

This method is great....I've been using it for the last six months or so and my SEO clients have skyrocketed. At first, I was focusing more on affiliate sales and website leasing but the money in offline services was to much to ignore. Plus, some human interaction is nice once in awhile. =)

    Robert -

How many emails are you sending out before you're getting a response? That might be helpful to figure out for noobs out there looking to implement this tactic.
