How do large brands build backlinks?

A large brand (radioshack, bestbuy, etc) could never go out and "buy" backlinks...but how do they generate/encourage large amounts of backlinks then?

    Some of them, others just don't bother.

    It may not always be feasible to target specific local markets.

    Neither of these businesses need to buy backlinks, or even bother with them (not do most large companies). Does anyone have trouble finding either of those businesses when searching? Of course not. Also, for individual product listings in many instances lots of backlinks are developed by affiliates. Also, many business directories, advertisements, new articles and so forth link to them.

    They don't for the most part, they usually work more on TV and newspaper ads.
