Contact form, is it ok to use?

Alright heres a dumb question but I've been curious. You know how some websites have a "contact form" instead of an email address? Is there anything wrong with using the contact form as your means to email the business owner?

The few contact forms I've used got a couple of responses.

I suspect that from the business owners mindset, they think it's pretty cool to get an email from their website. Plus, chances are, emails that come from their contact form are set to pass their spam filters.

If I had to choose from one or the other though, I'd go with regular email. No reason why... It's just what I do. If regular email isn't available, I have no problem using the contact form.

I've emailed with the contact form before and it's no probs. I use a contact form with a captcha myself - nothing worse than having your email out in the open for all the spammers

Nothing at all wrong as far as I can see, and probably less of a chance of it being perceived as spam by the business.

It's THE way to go. If you're trying to provide service to people sometimes they don't have their automatic email set up and if they click the mailto: link it will open outlook and annoy them. For clients I use both. We have an online directory with emails they don't mind sharing with the public as well as a contact form. On sites where you want to keep emails private contact forms are the only way to go.
