Scarface lesson; never underestimate the other guy's greed. $110,000 cheat...

Here is an interesting story. It happened to me last year.

Many of us here are good people. You can see many threads with offline Warriors asking questions, wanting to know how to provide real value.

You might have been led to falsely believe, that the amount of value you create will lead to earnings proportional to that.

You may also believe that clients will surely appreciate your expertise. Here it the thing.

That's only half of the equation!

Because, believe it or not, many business owners will gladly scam you, and use you. People don't put that in their WSOs, because the harsh reality may bring down sales.

Here is what happened: somehow, I attracted a gready toad/client who was spending at least $110,000 a year, just on PPC.

They were selling bathroom equipment, with representatives all over the US. Basically, they want people to come into their offline show-rooms.

At that time, they had an emergency, Google would shut down their account, if they didn't act quickly.

They didn't know what to do, I did.

Stupidly, I said to myself "Let me help these guys out, it's an emergency, after all". So I didn't ask for cash upfront. They said their old "Adwords guy" left them, so if I could sort this problem, they would gladly become clients.

Lesson: anytime a client says "we have a lot of projects coming up" - that's a RED FLAG!!!

Since I'm in the UK, I had to stay up half the night to sort them out. Then, we spoke on Skype, to discuss the rest. I even sent them an action plan!

Now, their campaign was badly mismanaged, I could easily improve their results.

Well, after we discussed the fee, they said "Why don't we try you out for a month first? We want to be sure you can really create results."

WHAAAAAAAT! I just saved you from losing your account! Plus, I optimized your account to a more reasonable level!

To cut the long story short, I had to walk away. Even though the pay was promising.

You have to learn how to protect yourself. Business is a jungle, not a playground.

I really recommend Robert Ringer's "To Be Or Not To Be Intimidated". You will learn a lot about how to sell yourself, and position yourself the right way.

What do you think? Write it below!

I think you should've unoptimized their account back to it's previous level until you were paid what you were due!

Hahaha... I wouldn't have been worth it. I could have, because I used Adwords Editor to get the state of their account, before I started.

If I remember correctly, they removed their right after the conversation anyway.

Ringer's book is priceless, I agree...

In this case, hindsight is 20/20, unfortunately. I have found that when a client/prospect needs you desperately, that is the BEST time to negotiate. ...

..and it's easy to recognize that moment, after it has passed!

I had a similar event happen to me about 5 years ago...I had an informal understanding with a client, that a new business he was starting would become part of portfolio I would service and receive additional compensation from.

As it happens, the new project really took off, thanks in part to the sales page I wrote. Naively, I expected to now receive expanded compensation for this new revenue stream.....but that was not to be.

The client decided (no doubt since it was going so well) to pay only for the work done and no longer keep the promise of royalties. Had I signed a royalty agreement before this, I would have stood a better chance of making him keep his promise.

So, I learned to rely on no verbal promises...and even with a written contract to be prepared to enforce it.

You know, what goes around, comes around.

Just like in Ringer's case, I have always come full circle with people who tried to pull a fast one. Mostly with girls, but in business too...

People really understimate other people's greed.

I have been "tricked" by everyone, from innocent looking work at home moms, to wealthy business people.

It was a slow learning curve, but it was worth it.

Ringer's book definitely added at least 6 years to my life. That's how much longer it would have taken me to figure it out, at the rate I was going.

      It' that good!
P.S. Certain people perceive passion as weakness or desperation. You just gotta learn how to play the game.
